The atyid shrimps of Fiji with description of a new species Naturalis
Choy, S.C..
Fourteen species of shrimps belonging to four genera of the family Atyidae are reported from the Fiji Islands. Three genera are represented by only one species each: Antecaridina lauensis (Edmondson, 1935), Atyoida pilipes (Newport, 1847) and Atyopsis spinipes (Newport, 1847) while the fourth, Caridina is represented by eleven species (including one new, Caridina devaneyi spec. nov. which is described and illustrated). Keys are provided to separate the genera and species. Two species, Caridina japonica De Man, 1892 and C. longirostris H. Milne Edwards, 1837 are recorded from Fiji for the first time. C. devaneyi spec, nov., C. fijiana Choy, 1983 and C. nudirostris Choy, 1984 are so far known only from Fiji and may be endemic to the island of Viti Levu. All...

Allocation of Laophonte trispinosa Sewell to Xanthilaophonte gen. nov. and the description of X. carcinicola spec. nov. (Harpacticoida: Laophontidae) Naturalis
Fiers, F..
Laophonte trispinosa Sewell is reported here from various localities in the Indian and the West Pacific Ocean, and is allocated to the herein erected genus Xanthilaophonte gen. nov. A second species, X. carcinicola spec. nov. is described from Indon »sia. The genus Xanthilaophonte gen. nov. is most closely related with Echinolaophonte Nicholls. Both species of this genus live in association with decapods, mainly Xanthidae, and occur on the carapax of their hosts, between the bristles. Comparison of the copepodid development clearly shows that the advanced morphology of Xanthilaophonte gen. nov. resulted from heterochrony events.

On the Portunid crab Podophthalmus minabensis Sakai, 1962 Naturalis
Bruce, A.J..
The genus Podophthalmus Lamarck, 1801, includes only three species, one of which, Podophthalmus minabensis, has only recently been described by Sakai (1962) from a single damaged specimen collected from the coast of Japan. A second specimen, collected by the R.V. "Cape St. Mary" of the Fisheries Research Station, Hong Kong, from off the coast of Sarawak enables the description of the species to be completed and adds to the knowledge of its distribution. The specimen has been deposited at the British Museum (Natural History), London. Podophthalmus minabensis Sakai (fig. 1-2) Podophthalmus minabensis Sakai, 1962: 144, text-fig. 2e, pl. 3 fig. 1. Material examined. — 1 ♀, non-ovigerous, lacking left first pereiopod. Off Sarawak, Borneo, 20 51.5'Ν 110° 16.8'E...

Rhizocephala from New Guinea : IV. Notes on Parasites of various Crabs Naturalis
Boschma, H..
The parasites dealt with in the present paper were brought together by Dr. L. D. Brongersma, Dr. L. B. Holthuis, and Dr. M. Boeseman during their recent voyage to New Guinea1). One of the specimens had to remain unidentified on account of lack of distinct characters; the other parasites proved to belong to previously described species, often presenting peculiarities leading to additional data of specific variation. Sacculina brevispina Van Kampen & Boschma No. 1323B. Biak Island, reef West of Sorido, 1 specimen on Phymodius ungulatus (H. Milne Edwards), February, 1955. The type specimen of Sacculina brevispina is a parasite of the crab Actaea hirsutissima (Rüppell) from Sanguisiapu in the Sulu Islands (Van Kampen & Boschma, 1925, p. 27). The...

Pinnotherid crabs of the genus Dissodactylus Smith, 1870, associated with irregular sea urchins at the Caribbean coast of Colombia (Crustacea: Decapoda: Pinnotheridae) Naturalis
Werding, B.; Sanchez, H..
Three species of the pinnotherid genus Dissodactylus were observed at the northern coast of the Colombian mainland and at Isla Providencia, associated with irregular sea urchins. While D. crinitichelis was previously known to occur at the continental coast of South America, D. rugatus and D. stebbingi are reported for the first time from the southern Caribbean Sea. D. calmani, previously reported from Florida, the Greater Antilles and Virgin Islands is stated to be a junior synonym of D. rugatus. For D. crinitichelis, a new host is reported.

Redescription of Coutierea agassizi (Coutière, 1901) (Crustacea Decapoda, Palaemonidae) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Since Coutière (1901) published the original description of his new species Coralliocaris Agassizi, no new finds of this species have been reported anymore. Recently a second specimen was collected by the University of Miami's R.V. "John Elliott Pillsbury", which makes it possible to give additional details of this peculiar species, which is so aberrant that it was made the type of a separate genus, of which it still is the only species known. Coutière's only specimen was a male and it it therefore most gratifying that the present second specimen is an ovigerous female. Unfortunately the exact locality where this second specimen was collected is not known. I am most grateful to Dr. Gilbert L. Voss, Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of...

Astigmatic mites from nests of birds of prey in the U.S.A. : IV. Description of the life-cycle of Acotyledon paradoxa Oudemans, 1903 Naturalis
Fain, A.; Philips, J.R..
INTRODUCTION In this paper we describe for the first time the life-cycle of Acotyledon paradoxα Oudemans, 1903. This species was known, so far, only from the hypopial stage and a protonymph. The discovery of the adults allows us to precise the systematic position of the genus Acotyledon and to throw light on this difficult group of Acaridae. All our material was found by the junior author in a nest of a screech owl, Otus asio, in Syracuse, New York, U.S.A. It includes numerous hypopi, protonymphs, tritonymphs and adults of both sexes. One of our protonymphs contained a completely developed hypopus identical with the other free hypopi. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE Oudemans (1903) erected the genus Acotyledon for a new species, A. paradoxa, represented only by...

Some observations on the larval development of Cyclops leuckarti Claus and Cyclops hyalinus Rehberg Naturalis
Andreae, J.C..
Introduction. Whilst examining the vertical distribution of planktonic Copepoda in the Klinkenberger Put, a deep pond at Warmond near Leiden, wide about 400 m, without any connection with other water, samples were taken in October 1951, November 1951, January 1952, February 1952, and March 1952. In the samples of March 1952 a large quantity of larvae of Copepoda were found. A small part of them was in the naupliar stages; the majority, however, appeared to be present as copepodids. These copepodids proved to belong to two different subgenera, viz., Cyclops Claus and Mesocyclops Sars. In the samples only a few adult forms were found, these were Cyclops (Cyclops) strenuus Fischer, Cyclops (Cyclops) vicinus Uljanin, Cyclops (Mesocyclops) leuckarti Claus, and...

Decapod crustaceans from the Neogene of the Caribbean: diversity, distribution and prospectus Naturalis
Collins, J.S.H.; Portell, R.W.; Donovan, S.K..
The Neogene decapod crustaceans are reviewed from Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, Anguilla, Barbados, Carriacou, Costa Rica, Cuba, Florida, Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, Tintamare Island, Trinidad and Venezuela. The most widely distributed taxa, both stratigraphically and geographically, are callianassids and Calappa (both with easily identifiable dactyli), and portunids. The latter include eleven genera in the study area; of these, Callinectes, Euphylax and Portunus are known from the Miocene, Pliocene and Pleistocene of the Caribbean. The two occurrences of scleractinian-inhabiting crab faunas, the Lower Miocene Montpelier Formation of Jamaica and the Pleistocene Coral Rock of Barbados, show...

Chromodoris magnifica (Quoy & Gaimard, 1832), a new nudibranch host for the shrimp Periclimenes imperator Bruce, 1967 (Pontoniinae) Naturalis
Fransen, C.H.J.M.; Goud, J..
During the NNM/Maluku Expedition 1996, in the framework of the NNM Fauna Malesiana Marine Program, a shrimp belonging to the species Periclimenes imperator Bruce, 1967, was found on a nudibranch while diving at 20 m depth in Seri Bay, on the south coast of Ambon. Periclimens imperator has been recorded throughout the tropical Indo-West Pacific, from East Africa and the Red Sea to Hawaii, from nudibranch and holothurian hosts. The nudibranch was identified as Chromodorus magnifica (Quoy & Gaimard, 1832) (see Rudman, 1982: 216-219, figs. 17A, B, 18, 19). The association with Chromodorus magnifica is recorded here for the first time.

Naamlijst van de Nederlandse miljoenpoten (Myriapoda: Diplopoda) Naturalis
Berg, M.P..
Checklist of the Dutch millipedes (Myriapoda: Diplopoda) An updated checklist for the millipedes of the Netherlands is presented. Now, a total of 50 species is known to occur in the country. Four species, i.e. Archiboreoiulus pallidus, Leptoiulus proximum, Mycogona germanica, and Polydesmus coriaceus and one subspecies, i.e. Craspedosoma rawlinsii alsaticum, are new compared with the previous checklist. Three species are removed from the checklist, i.e. for Stosatea italica and Unciger foetidus no voucher specimens could be found to confirm the published doubtful records, and Nanogona polydesmoides which proved to be a wrong identification. The updated list will be used for the distribution mapping scheme ‘millipedes of the Netherlands’ of the...

Two new spiders from Sumatra (Araneae, Telemidae and Ochyroceratidae) Naturalis
Brignoli, P.M..
Apneumonella jacobsoni n. sp. is described (♀, ♂ unknown; typ. loc.: Fort de Kock, Sumatra, Indonesia); this species, which can be distinguished from all other known Telemids by general morphology, genitalia, chelicerae, etc., is provisionally included in Apneumonella; the differential characters between the existing genera of the Telemidae are apparently small, mostly through lack of information, and only future study may allow to decide on their validity and on the position of this and other species. Speocera krikkeni n. sp. is described (♂ ♀; typ. loc.: Indonesia, N. Sumatra, Mt. Bandahara, Serbolangit Range); the only closely related species seems to be S. laureata Komatsu, 1974, from Okinawa, from which it can be distinguished by the ♂ ♀ genitalia.

Man, J.G. de.
Scyllarm arctus (L.). I am sorry to say that the key to the indopacific species of the genus Scyllarus Fabr., published by me at p. 68 of Part III of my work on the Decapoda Macrura of the Siboga Expedition (J. G. de Man, Siboga Exp., Monogr. 39a2, Eryonidae etc. 1916) is in part incorrect. The section g1 at p. 70 should henceforth be read as follows: g1 Abdominal terga not at all prominent. h1 Anterior extremity of the sternum with a deep triangular notch 1). i1 Carapace with 2 teeth in the middle line before the cervical groove. j1 First abdominal somite with a dark, oval spot in the middle. Octocorallia from North-Western Madagascar (Part II) Naturalis
Verseveldt, J..
INTRODUCTION In the preface of the first part of the series "Octocorallia from northwestern Madagascar" (Verseveldt, 1969) I mentioned that Dr. Arthur G. Humes, Boston University, Massachusetts, U.S.A., made a rich collection of octocorals from the waters north-west of Madagascar, and that he kindly entrusted this material to me for study and report. This second part deals with a large number of these octocorals, belonging to the orders Telestacea, Alcyonacea and Gorgonacea (suborder Scleraxonia). The majority of the specimens reported upon are now in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden ; their register numbers are preceded by the abbreviation RMNH. A few specimens collected by Dr. J. H. Stock now form part of the collection of the Zoölogisch...

Cirripeds from the Malay Archipelago in the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam Naturalis
Nilsson-Cantell, C.A..
During several visits to the Zoological Museum, Amsterdam, I have been able to study the whole collection of Cirripeds. Most of the material is already known from Hoek's important study of the Siboga collection. Yet there was some material left undetermined. By the courtesy of the Director, Professor De Beaufort, I have been able to work out this material. For this I want to express here my best thanks, including in this also thanks to the Curator Dr. H. Engel, who afforded me much help by giving information about the localities. Duplicates of this collection are preserved in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden. In the present paper I have taken up only those species of the collection which are from the Indomalayan region. The rest of the...
