Some additional Notes on external Features and on the jaw muscles of Orthragoriscus mola (L.) Naturalis
Roon, J.M. van.
In 1939 J. M. van Roon and J. J. ter Pelkwijk published some data on two specimens of Orthragoriscus mola (L.) stranded on the Dutch coast. Measurements of bones and muscles of the jaw were given on account of the functional treatise concerning the mechanism of the jaw of Orthragoriscus given by Van Dobben (1935), based upon one specimen that differed in many ways from both individuals we dissected. In the following years, we got three more specimens and an examination of the jaw muscles proved them to be fully agreeing with the two fishes described before. It seems worth while to publish corresponding data and measurements. Specimen C, a female, stranded December 12, 1939 near Kamperduin in the neighbourhood of Schoorl. This fish was more oblong than...

On a collection of fishes from East Java Naturalis
Koumans, F.P..
Through the courtesy of Mr. K. van Vuure, officer of the Fisheries at Pasoeroean, Java, the Leiden Museum received a very interesting collection of fishes from the eastern part of Java. The collection was made in November 1938 and contained both freshwater and marine species. On a joined list of each lot the vernacular name was given and the exact locality, giving the village (desa), district, regency (regentschap) and residence (residentie); these topographical names are stated in this paper as desa, distr., reg. and res. The vernacular names are partly Javanese, partly Madurese, indicated as Jav. and Mad. The fishes are arranged according to the system of Günther's Catalogue of Fishes. Epinephelus merra Bl., 1 specimen, desa Tandjoeng Petjinan, distr....

Notes on South American catfishes, including remarks on Valenciennes And Bleeker types in the Leiden Museum Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
I A recent perusal of Valenciennes' accounts on the nematognathous fishes (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1839, 1840) showed that of the numerous South American species newly described or renamed, eighteen wholly or partly were based on specimens in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden. It was surprising to find that most of these specimens are stated to have been sent to Leiden from Cayenne, and only a few from Surinam, for most of the pre-1839 South American catfishes in the Leiden Museum are of Surinam origin and few, if any, from Cayenne. Moreover, an examination of the collection showed that up to recently none of the specimens belonging to the pertinent species bear any indication as to a typical status. On...

Enkele notities over minder algemene beenvis-soorten in de Zuidoostelijke Noordzee Naturalis
Boer, P..

Notes on new or rare marine fishes from Surinam Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
The fish collection of the Leiden Museum has recently been enriched by the donation of a few small or moderate collections of fishes assembled in tropical Atlantic America. As these proved to contain some representatives of species rarely encountered or even new to science and, moreover, provided interesting distributional information, publication of a few notes containing the principal data seems of interest. Note I. — A collection of about 40 specimens from Surinam, representing 29 species mostly marine, was received from Ir. Z. Salverda, who appears to have collected them himself. Unfortunately, Ir. Salverda omitted adding more detailed locality information, but all marine species can be expected to occur throughout the whole of the coastal region. Two...

Taxonomy, ecology and fishery of Lake Victoria haplochromine trophic groups Naturalis
Witte, F.; Oijen, M.J.P van.
Based on ecological and morphological features, the 300 or more haplochromine cichlid species of Lake Victoria are classified into fifteen (sub)trophic groups. A key to the trophic groups, mainly based on external morphological characters, is presented. Of each trophic group a description is given comprising data on taxonomy, ecology and fishery. As far as possible data from the period before the Nile perch upsurge and from the present situation are compared. A list of described species classified into trophic groups is added.

Late Silurian fish microfossils from Klinta and Rinnebäcks Bro (Scania, south Sweden), with remarks on the morphology of Nostolepis striata trunk scales Naturalis
Vergoossen, J.M.J..
The microvertebrate faunas from ten small pieces of rock from the Öved Sandstone Formation at Klinta (1-10) yielded osteostracan, heterostracan, thelodont, and acanthodian remains, dated here as Whitcliffian. The most important age indicators are the heterostracan Archegonaspis and the thelodont zonal fossil Thelodus sculptilis. The latter taxon is also present in a small Whitcliffian fauna from the Öved Sandstone Formation at Rinnebäcks bro, together with other thelodont and acanthodian remains. From Rinnebäcks bro no previous records of Silurian fish fossils exist. In an attempt to gain a better understanding of nostolepid trunk scale variation and to develop an instrument to assess this variation, seven Nostolepis striata trunk scales from Klinta are...

Phenotypic variation in the Snowtrout Schizothorax richardsonii (Gray, 1832) (Actinopterygii: Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) from the Indian Himalayas Naturalis
Mir, F.A.; Mir, J.I.; Chandra, S..
We investigated intraspecific variation of the Snowtrout, Schizothorax richardsonii on the basis of morphometric characters. Altogether, 217 specimens were collected from four rivers in the Western and Central Indian Himalaya. A truss network was constructed by interconnecting 14 landmarks to yield 31 distance variables that were extracted from digital images of specimens using tpsDig2 and PAST software. Transformed truss measurements were subjected to univariate analysis of variance, factor analysis and discriminant analysis. All variables exhibited significant differences between the populations. Altogether 86.6% of the specimens were classified into their original populations (82.9 % under a ‘leave-one-out’ procedure). With factor analysis measurements...

Revision du Genre Aseraggodes Kaup Naturalis
Chabanaud, P..
