Market Valuation of Preconditioning Feeder Calves AgEcon
Avent, R. Keith; Ward, Clement E.; Lalman, David L..
Preconditioning calf programs, while not new, are becoming more prevalent. They provide benefits to cow-calf producers while adding value for feeder cattle buyers. However, questions remain regarding the economic costs and returns of such programs. A model was estimated with data from three consecutive-day sales, to determine the value that buyers place on preconditioning programs and related feeder cattle traits. Our results indicate that price premiums, although evident, appear to be insufficient by themselves to cover the marginal costs of preconditioning.

The Direct Economic Effects of Stricter Standards Towards the Protection of Human and Animal Health in Swine Sector AgEcon
Mora, Cristina; Menozzi, Davide.
The objective of this study is to present the results of a research carried out on a group of farms involved in pig fattening (48 farms) to evaluate the economic impact of implementing human and animal health regulation. The five types considered in any case represent 90-95% of the total health costs, there are therefore economies of scale and considering the types of expenditure, veterinary medicines have a strong incidence on fattening farms, together with medicated feed for consumption on the farm and the control of Aujeszky's disease. The overall health costs have on average reached the 2% of total costs and the same value of the net income.

PRICE PREMIUMS FROM A CERTIFIED FEEDER CALF PRECONDITIONING PROGRAM AgEcon
Ward, Clement E.; Lalman, David L..
Preconditioning calf programs, while not new, are becoming more prevalent. They provide benefits to cow-calf producers while adding value for feeder cattle buyers. However, questions remain regarding the marginal returns from marketing preconditioned calves exceeds the marginal costs for preconditioning. This paper reports estimates from two models to determine the premium paid by feeder cattle buyers for preconditioned calves in the Oklahoma Quality Beef Network (OQBN) program. One model assumes feeder calf characteristics are independent as most previous research. The other assumes interdependency between several characteristics that are affected by preconditioning. Data were from seven feeder calf sales in Oklahoma in 2001 and another seven sales in...

Australia’s biosecurity: future challenges for animal industries AgEcon
Nunn, Mike J..
Australia’s very good animal health status faces a wide range of biosecurity challenges that will arise during the next decade from changes in disease risk, ecosystems, technology and the policy environment in which animal producers operate. An understanding of these challenges should help enable producers to adopt management strategies to make their enterprises more resilient, as well as help policy-makers make better-informed choices to maintain and improve the health of Australia’s animals and animal industries.

Fuglie, Keith O.; Heisey, Paul W.; King, John L.; Day-Rubenstein, Kelly A.; Schimmelpfennig, David E.; Wang, Sun Ling.
Meeting growing global demand for food, fiber, and biofuel requires robust investment in agricultural research and development (R&D) from both public and private sectors. This study examines global R&D spending by private industry in seven agricultural input sectors, food manufacturing, and biofuel and describes the changing structure of these industries. In 2007 (the latest year for which comprehensive estimates are available), the private sector spent $19.7 billion on food and agricultural research (56 percent in food manufacturing and 44 percent in agricultural input sectors) and accounted for about half of total public and private spending on food and agricultural R&D in high-income countries. In R&D related to biofuel, annual...

Devi,A; Diarra,SS; Mael,SH.
ABSTRACT This study analyzes the effect of different levels of expeller copra meal (ECM) in animal protein-based diets with enzyme on the haematology, carcass and fatty acid composition of broilers. One hundred and sixty 20 days old Cobb broilers were assigned 8 different diets, 2 of them being controls and 6 others containing ECM at 150, 300 and 450 g/kg, with or without enzymes. Four replicate cages of 5 birds each were fed the diets in a completely randomized design. Higher white blood cell (WBC) counts were obtained in chickens fed the control and 150 g/kg ECM with enzyme (p<0.05) diets. Meat saturated fatty acids (SFA) content increased on the 150 g/kg diet and later decreased above 300 g/kg without enzyme (p<0.05). Monounsaturated fatty acid...

TERMINOLOGY CONCEPTS OF PROBIOTIC AND PREBIOTIC AND THEIR ROLE IN HUMAN AND ANIMAL HEALTH Rev Salud Anim.
Ferreira,Célia Lucia; Salminen,S; Lukasz,Grzeskowiak; Brizuela,Maria Antonieta; Sanchez,Lilian; Carneiro,Heloísa; Bonnet,M.
The mode of action of specific probiotic bacteria and specific prebiotic ingredients and their effects on the intestinal microbiota modulation in humans and animals has been demonstrated in many studies. Intestine is characterized for harboring a complex and dynamic microbiota which, among others, has a function to protect the host from inflammatory disorders. A mature and balanced endogenous microbiota has also an important role in the maintenance of a desirable activity of the immune system. Deviations in gut microbiota composition, due to improper diet, radiotherapy, antibiotic treatment, stress and others, may lead to a variety of gastrointestinal disorders. To overcome an unbalanced microbiota, the consumption of specific probiotics and prebiotics has...

Mortality on grower/finisher-only swine operations in the United States Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Losinger,W.C.; Bush,E.J.; Smith,M.A.; Corso,B.A..
For 53 grower/finisher-only swine operations that participated in the United States National Animal Health Monitoring System 1995 National Swine Study, mortality among finisher pigs ranged from 0 to 12.0% over a 6-month period. Twenty-six (49.1%) had <2% mortality, and 27 (50.9%) had >2% mortality. Nine (17.0%) operations experienced >4% mortality. Fisher's exact test revealed that operations with all-in all-out management were significantly more likely to have <2% mortality than operations with continuous management, and that operations where all finisher pigs came from farrowing units belonging to the operation (either on-site or off-site) were significantly more likely to have <2% mortality than operations where >1 grower/finisher pig...
