Effect of past nutritional history and fasting on feed intake and growth in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss ArchiMer
Boujard, Thierry; Burel, Christine; Medale, Francoise; Haylor, Graham; Moisan, Annick.
Groups of juvenile rainbow trout were fed to satiation for 10 days after 1, 11 and 21 days of feed deprivation. These fish (initial body weight =20 +/- 2 g) were previously fed at different feeding levels (0.5 or 1.5% initial body weight, to satiation) with a high (20.4 kJ . g(-1)) or a low (16.2 kJ.g(-1)) digestible energy diet content for 34 days. It is shown that past nutritional history affected growth performance: duration of feed deprivation has a major effect on intake and feed conversion efficiency; previous feeding level has an effect on intake; dietary energy content affected feed conversion efficiency. In addition, an attempt was made to identify some of the metabolic parameters that could be involved in the increase in growth performance during...

The "Office International des Epizooties" (OIE) its role in improving awareness and prevention of international transfers of diseases in aquaculture ArchiMer
Hill, B; Kinkelin De, P; Chen, S.
The Office International des Epizooties (O.I.E.) is an international veterinary organisation (established in 1924) comprising 110 member countries worldwide. Its main objective is to promote awareness of serious animal disease problems associated with trade in live animals and of means for control and prevention. It acts as a central source of information on the occurrence and progress of epizootics of listed diseases and the methods being applied for their control in individual countries. This information is disseminated through a monthly bulletin and a yearly report on the animal health situation worldwide. The Animal Health code lays down recommended procedures for health surveillance of animals for domestic and international trade.

Investigation of marine bivalve morphology by in vivo MR imaging: first anatomical results of a promising technique ArchiMer
Pouvreau, Stephane; Rambeau, Marc; Cochard, Jean-claude; Robert, Rene.
Classically, investigation of the internal morphology and composition of molluscs and especially bivalves relies on destructive method (biometry, biochemistry and histology). These techniques have given essential information, but in contrast are time consuming and lead to the irreversible loss of the animal while they don't allow integration of the various levels of molecular-to-organism functioning. The aim of this study is to analyze for the first time the potential of NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) imaging (MRI) to depict, with sufficient resolution and satisfactory contrast, the anatomy of a bivalve model, the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, without opening it. MRI experiments were carried out at 19 °C in several non-anaesthetized adult Pacific...

A white spot disease-like syndrome in the Pacific blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris) as a form of bacterial shell disease ArchiMer
Goarant, Cyrille; Brizard, Raphael; Marteau, Anne-laure.
In May 1997, some white lesions evoking the white spot syndrome disease were observed in Litopenaeus stylirostris broodstock in New Caledonia. The occurrence of these lesions was neither associated with mortality, nor with histological evidence of white spot syndrome baculovirus (WSBV), The evidence suggests that these lesions result from a form of bacterial disease and are associated with an increased bacterial flora on the outer surface of the cuticle, as well as an increased incidence throughout the molt cycle. A microscopic observation of these lesions allows them to be differentiated from WSBV-associated lesions.

Le stock de Lambi (Strombus gigas, L.) en Martinique : analyse de la situation 1986-1987, modélisation de l'exploitation, options d'aménagement ArchiMer
Rathier, I.
The stock of Lambi, Strombus gigas (gastropod: strombidae), coastal benthic resource, has been exploited artisanally since the prehistoric period in Martinique. Nowadays, three lines of work exploit the species: free diving, nets (since the middle of the century) and scuba diving since 1985. This report presents the activity of each line of work, surveyed directly from 1986 to 1987: fishing zones and resource allocation, production, effort and performance, detail of catches (by length). The socio economic characteristics of the lambi fishermen are studied. The significant production of leisure fishing is also estimated. The decrease in the production and performance, as well as the lowering of the size of the first catch for about thirty years show that...

Environmental risks associated with contaminants of legacy and emerging concern at European aquaculture areas ArchiMer
Aminot, Yann; Sayfritz, Stephen J.; Thomas, Kevin V.; Godinho, Lia; Botteon, Elena; Ferrari, Federico; Boti, Vasiliki; Albanis, Triantafyllos; Köck-schulmeyer, Marianne; Diaz-cruz, Silvia; Farré, Marinella; Barceló, Damià; Marques, António; Readman, James W..
The contamination of marine ecosystems by contaminants of emerging concern such as personal care products or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances is of increasing concern. This work assessed the concentrations of selected contaminants of emerging concern in water and sediment of European aquaculture areas, to evaluate their co-variation with legacy contaminants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and faecal biomarkers, and estimate the risks associated with their occurrence. The 9 study sites were selected in 7 European countries to be representative of the aquaculture activities of their region: 4 sites in the Atlantic Ocean and 5 in the Mediterranean Sea. Musks, UV filters, preservatives, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and polycyclic aromatic...

Molecular Ontogeny of First-Feeding European Eel Larvae ArchiMer
Politis, Sebastian Nikitas; Sorensen, Sune R.; Mazurais, David; Servili, Arianna; Zambonino-infante, Jose-luis; Miest, Joanna J.; Clemmesen, Catriona M.; Tomkiewicz, Jonna; Butts, Ian A. E..
Digestive system functionality of fish larvae relies on the onset of genetically pre-programmed and extrinsically influenced digestive functions. This study explored how algal supplementation (green-water) until 14 days post hatch (dph) and the ingestion of food [enriched rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis) paste] from 15 dph onward affects molecular maturation and functionality of European eel larval ingestion and digestion mechanisms. For this, we linked larval biometrics to expression of genes relating to appetite [ghrelin (ghrl), cholecystokinin (cck)], food intake [proopiomelanocortin (pomc)], digestion [trypsin (try), triglyceride lipase (tgl), amylase (amyl)], energy metabolism [ATP synthase F0 subunit 6 (atp6), cytochrome-c-oxidase 1 (cox1)], growth...

Production of shellfish production models ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric.
The first definition we could give to model is quite general : a model is any representation of the real world or what it is supposed to be at a given moment ; it clearly depends on the knowledge about reality or part of it ; as an abstraction it is necessary based on concepts and assumptions. This paper deals with mathematical modls only and among them, those which try to simulate biological mechanisms (for about 15 years however, other mathematicial approaches have been developping such as adaptative strategies, adapted from economics). Simulation alloxs to study dynamical behaviour of the elements of the ecosystem (which we denoted the real world) defined by the modeliser. Then two main purposes may be reached by the model : - prediction and management...

Effects of fish farming on seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) in a Mediterranean bay: seagrass decline after organic loading cessation ArchiMer
Delgado, O; Ruiz, J; Perez, M; Romero, J; Ballesteros, E.
The effects of fish farming on a seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) meadow at Fornells Bay, Minorca (Balearic Islands) were studied. Changes in plant and meadow features (e.g. shoot morphology, shoot density, biomass, rhizome growth, nutrient and soluble sugars concentrations...) in three stations along a transect from a disturbed (organic pollution due to fish cultures) to an undisturbed site were assessed. The fish culture had ceased in 1991; however, seagrass decline, already reported in a previous study for the period 1988-1990, was still taking place at the time of sampling (July 1994). Differences between stations were very clear; the station closest to the fish cages showed reduced shoot density, shoot size, underground biomass, sucrose concentration and...

Développement de la conchyliculture et de l'aquaculture importance pour l'aménagement du littoral ArchiMer
Le Dantec, Jean.
In a document from the General Secretariat of the Merchant Navy (P. 3 - MJ - June 1976), it is written: The coast is a rare asset, limited in essence as it is not interchangeable. Moreover, it is coveted and used by numerous users, sometimes aggressive or very powerful, who often take up the areas that are the richest from a biological point of view. This reality is at the origin of a number of land occupancy issues, all the more when a rational or enhancive preliminary choice has not been made. It can also lead to damages or pollutions, the coastal area being more exposed as rivers carry all the effluents which flow into them from their source to the ocean". Witnessing this competition, it appears that marine cultures need to be considered as very...

Fluctuating asymmetry and mortality in cultured oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in Marennes-Oleron basin ArchiMer
Frechette, Marcel; Goulletquer, Philippe; Daigle, Gaétan.
Japanese cupped oysters suffer summer mortality in many culture sites along the French Atlantic coast. To ascertain whether mortality might be associated with morphological features of the shells, we estimated fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of hatchery/nursery-produced oysters kept in culture bags in the intertidal. FA is defined as random variations from a perfect symmetry plane (bilateral or radial) in some morphological trait. FA increases with disruption of homeostasy during ontogeny and has both genetic and environmental determinants. We found significant differences in FA between dead and live oysters in two of our three study groups. Therefore, lack of developmental stability may be involved in the summer mortality syndrome of oysters. We also found...

Origin and route of establishment of the invasive Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in Scandinavia ArchiMer
Faust, Ellika; Andre, Carl; Meurling, Sara; Kochmann, Judith; Christiansen, Henrik; Jensen, Lasse Fast; Charrier, Gregory; Laugen, Ane T.; Strand, Asa.
Identifying the routes and rates of introductions is fundamental for the understanding of marine invasions. Recurring introductions over the last 50 yr have led to the establishment of feral Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas populations throughout Europe. In the northern countries, Sweden and Norway, the species first occurred in large numbers in 2006. Here, we investigated the relative importance of introduction via re-laying of cultured oysters imported for consumption from France, Ireland or the Netherlands, and dispersal of oyster larvae by ocean currents from wild oyster populations in Denmark. Using microsatellite DNA markers, we estimated genetic differentiation among Pacific oysters collected at 4 Swedish locations, 3 Norwegian locations and 9...

First record of the microsporidian parasite Steinhausia mytilovum in Mytilus sp (Bivalvia : Mytilidae) from France ArchiMer
Comtet, Thierry; Garcia, Celine; Le Coguic, Yvette; Joly, Jean-pierre.
Steinhausia mytilovuln is a globally distributed microsporidian parasite which infects the oocytes of the blue mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis. Despite the intensive monitoring effort made on mussel populations, the parasite has not previously been reported in France. We report herein on the occurrence of S. mytilovum in Mytilus sp. from 1 cultured and 2 natural populations on the northern coast of France, thus extending the parasite's known distribution northwards. We also report on the observation in 1989 of S. mytilovum in M, galloprovincialis from the Golfe de Fos area in the Mediterranean Sea (South of France), S. mytilovum was observed in the European hybrid zone between M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis, which therefore renders the...

Genetic structure of a commercially exploited bivalve, the great scallop Pecten maximus, along the European coasts ArchiMer
Morvezen, Romain; Charrier, Gregory; Boudry, Pierre; Chauvaud, Laurent; Breton, Florian; Strand, Oivind; Laroche, Jean.
The great scallop Pecten maximus is harvested in several European countries and fisheries targeting this species are severely regulated by fishing quotas. In addition, hatchery-based population enhancement has been developed in some countries to provide alternative or complementary production. The genetic structure of wild populations of P. maximus and the potential impact of aquaculture on the genetic diversity of this species remains poorly documented. In this study, we explored the genetic structure of P. maximus using 12 microsatellite markers, considering 14 populations sampled from Galicia (Spain) to the North of Norway, and one population of Pecten jacobaeus (L., 1758) from the Lion Gulf (Mediterranean Sea). Results indicated a clear differentiation...
