Dynamique du phosphore et rôle comme facteur limitant de la production planctonique dans le panache de la Gironde sur le plateau continental Sud Gascogne ArchiMer
Labry, Claire.
This study was supported by the Atlantic working site of the « Programme National d’Océanographie Côtière » (PNOC, PNEC since 1999). The objectives were (1) to check the existence and to understand the mechanisms of winter phytoplankton blooms in the bay of Biscay influenced by the Gironde waters (2) to determine the limiting nutrient of the primary production associated to these blooms and to follow the seasonal evolution of the limiting nutrient, (3) to understand the consequences of this early limitation on the structuration of algal populations in spring. Since phosphorus was supposed to be the major limiting nutrient of algal growth in the Gironde plume, the different forms of the phosphorus cycle as well as the bacterial compartment, central in this...

Environmental setting of deep-water oysters in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Van Rooij, David; De Mol, L.; Le Guilloux, Erwan; Wisshak, M.; Huvenne, V. A. I.; Moeremans, R.; Henriet, Jean-pierre.
We report the northernmost and deepest known occurrence of deep-water pycnodontine oysters based on two surveys along the French Atlantic continental margin to the La Chapelle continental slope (2006) and the Guilvinec Canyon (2008) The combined use of multibeam bathymetry seismic profiling CTD casts and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) made it possible to describe the physical habitat and to assess the oceanographic control for the recently described species Neopycnodonte zibrowii These oysters have been observed in vivo in depths from 540 to 846 m colonizing overhanging banks or escarpments protruding from steep canyon flanks Especially in the Bay of Biscay such physical habitats may only be observed within canyons where they are created by both...

Some expected impacts of the Common Fishery Policy on marine food webs ArchiMer
Kopp, Dorothee; Robert, Marianne; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Mehault, Sonia.
For the ecosystem approach to fisheries management, understanding population dynamics and ecosystem resilience in response to the landing obligation acted by the reform of the European Common Fishery Policy (CFP) is currently an important avenue of research. This study attempts to assess the impact of the new CFP on marine food webs. Total carbon and nitrogen loss induced by a discard ban were estimated for the ecosystem of the Bay of Biscay based on French At-Sea Observer data and carbon and nitrogen content of discarded fish. Changes in predator diets were estimated by comparing two Bayesian mixing models, one mimicking the current situation and the second the application of the new CFP (removing the discarded species that would be landed from the...

Variability of energy density among mesozooplankton community: new insights in functional diversity to forage fish ArchiMer
Dessier, Aurelie; Dupuy, Christine; Kerric, Anais; Mornet, Francoise; Authier, Matthieu; Bustamante, Paco; Spitz, Jerome.
To explore some aspects of mesozooplankton functional diversity, this study quantified energy density during the springtime in the Bay of Biscay both between different species and between different size-classes. Energy densities of copepod species (Centropages typicus, Anomalocera patersoni, Calanus helgolandicus, and Labidocera wollastoni), as well as anchovy eggs (Engraulis encrasicolus) ranged from 0.5 to 6.7 kJ/g wet weight (ww). Considering size-classes, energy densities varied from 0.74 to 1.26 kJ/g ww. Energy density of C. helgolandicus exhibited a spatial pattern with the highest values in the plume of the Gironde estuary. In contrast, no spatial pattern of energy density has been detected considering size-classes. Our results showed that the...

Utilisation de l'écho-intégration en recherche halieutique (Analyse de 5 campagnes effectuées dans le Golfe de Gascogne de 1983 à 1987) ArchiMer
Masse, Jacques.
Afler a short review of acoustic principles, methodology and purposes of accustic surveys are described and some examples given. IFREMER instrumentation, strategy and calculations used during echo sur veys are  described in details and criticized. Five acouslic sur veys carried o t in the Bay of Biscay between 1983 and 1987 show that several species are generally mixed , and lheir identification is very oflen biased by behaviour phenomena. A new way of classi fying echotraces and interpretating data has been applied to these surveys. The results are summarized in tables and maps. Whenever multispecies structures are concerned, it seems at present impossible to assess absolute biomasses based on acoustic survey method. ln such a situation, acoustic surveys...

Interannual fluctuations in spring pelagic ecosystem productivity in the Bay of Biscay (northeast Atlantic) measured by mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase activity and relationships with anchovy population dynamics ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Koueta, Noussithe; Masse, Jacques.
The French part of the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay (northeast Atlantic) is the habitat of an anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) population of scientific interest because of its economic importance and the trend towards greater interannual fluctuations in its abundance, particularly as a consequence of variations in recruitment. Each year a 1-month survey of this population and its pelagic environment is undertaken. Among the descriptors of ecosystem function characterized, mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase (ATC) activity is measured with the goal of defining overall productivity of the mesozooplankton communities. Diverse physical forcing factors are responsible for the enhancement of productivity in the Bay of Biscay, and their...

Diversité phénotypique dans la population d’anchois commun (Engraulis encrasicolus) du golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Leseur, Floriane.
With the constant rising of the human population, it is essential to assess and manage the exploitation of the marine species for human consumption such as the anchovy of Bay of Biscay. Thanks to the PELGAS annual surveys, stocks of each species are estimated (biomass, repartition) and studies are undertaken to improve our knowledge about these species. Allozymic studies realized on the anchovy allowed to find a correlation between 2 alleles of the locus IDH and the habitat (depth). This allozyme has a key role in Krebs’ cycle, being speed limiting.. It enables to tolerate variations of temperature and dissolved oxygen. It would be interesting to do new research on variations in the anchovy’s environment and its migrations.

Satellite-derived parameters for biological modelling in coastal waters: Illustration over the eastern continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Gohin, Francis; Loyer, S; Lunven, Michel; Labry, Claire; Froidefond, J; Delmas, Daniel; Huret, Martin; Herbland, Alain.
In biological modelling of the coastal phytoplankton dynamics, the light attenuation coefficient is often expressed as a function of the concentrations of chlorophyll and mineral suspended particulate matter (SPM). In order to estimate the relationship between these parameters over the continental shelf of the northern Bay of Biscay, a set of in situ data has been gathered for the period 1998-2003 when SeaWiFS imagery is available. These data comprise surface measurements of the concentrations of total SPM, chlorophyll, and irradiance profiles from which is derived the attenuation coefficient of the photosynthetically available radiation, K-PAR. The performance of the IFREMER look-up table used to retrieve the chlorophyll concentration from the SeaWiFS...

Étude par acoustique large bande de la composition et de la distribution spatiale de couches diffusantes denses dans le golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Blanluet, Arthur.
Intermediate trophic components of pelagic ecosystem (from mesozooplakton to micronekton) funnel energy and organic matters from primary producers to many commercial species (anchovy, sardines…). Some of these organisms are supposed to be important contributors to the ubiquitous Sound Scattering Layers (SSLs) observed over a broad range of spatio-temporal scales and geographical areas. Yet, the SSLs taxonomic composition remains largely unknown. The aim of this PhD was to describe the composition and repartition of dense SSLs observed in the Bay of Biscay (France) in spring at several spatial scales, using broadband acoustics, nets and videos. In the first chapter, we showed that the echo sounder beam widths had few effect on the SSLs backscatter,...

Déclin de la taille-aux-âges des sardines (Sardina pilchardus) : diminution de la croissance et/ou disparition sélective des individus à croissance rapide ArchiMer
Gentil, Claire.
In many exploited species, we see a decrease of size-at-ages. Two main hypotheses have been proposed to explain this decline: a decline in growth and the selective mortality of the individuals with fast growth both being due to environmental changes or/and to fishing. The sardine Sardina pilchardus of the Bay of Biscay is a good model for the study of this phenomenon because of its high sensitivity to the environmental variations and it sustains two large French and Spanish fisheries. The aim of this study is to measure the changes in the growth of sardines, by the reading of otoliths, and to understand mechanisms involved in this process. The main stages of this study are described in this report: extraction of otoliths during PELGAS, otoliths...

Do survey design and wind conditions influence survey indices ? ArchiMer
Poulard, Jean-charles; Trenkel, Verena.
Survey indices play an important role in stock assessments as they provide information on stock trends. In certain cases large interannual variations have been observed which are unlikely to reflect true underlying stock changes but are rather outliers. When survey indices for several species appear to be outliers for the same year, the suspicion is raised that something happened during the survey of that year. This is called a year-effect in survey catches. To study the potential year-effect in survey catches for the French autumn groundfish survey taking place in the Bay of Biscay, several indicators for survey design and wind conditions were derived as explanatory variables and Principal Component Analysis was used to study the relationship between...

Histopathological assessment of liver and gonad pathology in continental slope fish from the northeast Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Feist, S. W.; Stentiford, G. D.; Kent, Maxxie; Ribeiro Santos, Ana; Lorance, Pascal.
The deep-sea environment is a sink for a wide variety of contaminants including heavy metals and organic compounds of anthropogenic origin. Life history traits of many deep-water fish species including longevity and high trophic position may predispose them to contaminant exposure and subsequent induction of pathological changes, including tumour formation. The lack of evidence for this hypothesis prompted this investigation in order to provide data on the presence of pathological changes in the liver and gonads of several deep-water fish species. Fish were obtained from the north east region of the Bay of Biscay (north east Atlantic Ocean) by trawling at depths between 700 to 1400m. Liver and gonad samples were collected on board ship and fixed for...

Monitoring small pelagic fish in the Bay of Biscay ecosystem, using indicators from an integrated survey ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Petitgas, Pierre; Huret, Martin; Duhamel, Erwan; Romagnan, Jean-baptiste; Authier, Matthieu; Dupuy, Christine; Spitz, Jerome.
This paper is a practical contribution to two important debates raised by the implementation of marine ecosystem based management: (i) which ecosystem data can be provided by a fisheries survey optimised for ecosystem monitoring; and (ii) how to combine/select potential indicators to derive useful information on marine ecosystem status and dynamics? A suite of 143 potential indicators, including spatial indices, representing small pelagic fish and their biotic and abiotic environments are presented. Indicators were routinely derived from the PELGAS integrated ecosystem survey conducted in spring in the Bay of Biscay (BoB). The general patterns over time in this suite of 5–16 years, non-stationary time series are characterised using a methodology based on...

Activity of the turbidite levees of the Celtic-Armorican margin (Bay of Biscay) during the last 30,000 years: Imprints of the last European deglaciation and Heinrich events ArchiMer
Toucanne, Samuel; Zaragosi, S; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Naughton, F; Cremer, M; Eynaud, F; Dennielou, Bernard.
High-resolution sedimentological and micropaleontological studies of several deep-sea cores retrieved from the levees of the Celtic and Armorican turbidite systems (Bay of Biscay - North Atlantic Ocean) allow the detection of the major oscillations of the British-Irish Ice Sheet (BIIS) and 'Fleuve Manche' palaeoriver discharges over the last 30,000 years, which were mainly triggered by climate changes. Between 30 and 20 cal ka, the turbiditic activity on the Celtic-Annorican margin was weak, contrasting with previous stratigraphic models which predicted a substantial increase of sediment supply during low sea-level stands. This low turbidite deposit frequency was most likely the result of a weak activity of the 'Fleuve Manche' palaeoriver and/or of a...

The stocks of whiting (Merlangius merlangus), pollack (Pollachius pollachius) and striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus), are considered by ICES as Data Limited Stocks (DLS) for the Bay of Biscay areas, those bordering the Iberian Peninsula as well as the Celtic Sea for red mullet. In the case of insufficient data for an analytical assessment, ICES has recommended, for 2013 and 2014, to precautionarily reduce landings by 20 % compared to the period 2009-2011 for these 3 stocks. In order to improve knowledge to fill the gaps in the status of these stocks, and to extract them from the DLS category, the ROMELIGO project has: i) analyzed available data on both catches and professional fishing activity, Captures per Unit of Effort (CPUE) to identify reference...

Morphospecies and taxonomic sufficiency of benthic megafauna in scientific bottom trawl surveys ArchiMer
Brind'Amour, Anik; Laffargue, Pascal; Morin, Jocelyne; Vaz, Sandrine; Foveau, Aurelie; Le Bris, Herve.
Scientific fisheries surveys routinely identify a large diversity of commercial and non-commercial benthic megainvertebrates that could provide useful information for Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) descriptors. Species is obviously the basic taxonomic level to which most ecological studies and theories refer. Identification at this level of organization is indeed always preferred over any other taxonomic level. Nevertheless, aggregation of species to higher taxonomic levels may be unavoidable sometimes, since errors of identification are known or suspected to occur in many surveys. Using analyses of taxonomic sufficiency (identification of organisms at various taxonomic resolutions) and groups of morphospecies (taxa identified easily by...

Changes in occurrence and abundance of northern/southern flatfishes over a 20-year period in a coastal nursery area (Bay of Vilaine) and on the eastern continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Desaunay, Yves; Guerault, Daniel; Le Pape, Olivier; Poulard, Jean-charles.
Several works have demonstrated trends in the distribution of fish species relative to global warming. This study investigated whether similar trends have occurred for selected flatfish species on the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay. These species were used as indicators and changes in their Populations were studied in a coastal nursery ground, where flatfish juveniles are concentrated as well as on the entire shelf. Previous studies analysing changes in sea surface temperature for the continental shelf indicate that winter warming occurred in the 1980s and 1990s. Sixteen autumn cruises conducted since 1981 in the Bay of Vilaine nursery area and I I autumn cruises since 1987 over the entire shelf provided data on a nearly annual basis for the...
