The high Brazilian external dependence turns the persecution for foreign reserves a permanent concern. This paper analyzes soybean competitiveness after 1990 as it led Brazilian agricultural exports and became its main exchange value source. By using several indicators it concludes for an increasing competitiveness of the grain and decreasing for cake of soybeans since 1997. During the ninety decade there were expressive increases of crop productivity, but after that the production was due to area increases; from 1991 to 2003 doubled the share of inputs (fertilizers, corrective and pesticides) in the production cost, the expense with those imported inputs was multiplied by ten, while soybean and its derived product export value was multiplied by four; the... |

The cost of meeting environmental regulations can be a critical factor in determining the competitiveness of a product, since the cost advantages of producers in one country are often very slim. The existence of negative externalities means that prices are lower than would prevail if all costs where included in the prices of the products. Additional costs associated with new regulations have an effect on the continued importance of a country's agricultural exports. Governments often assist their agricultural sectors in overcoming the disadvantages through subsidies, tax breaks, technical assistance or other means. This assistance increasingly takes the form of green payments, which are currently exempt from the WTO limits imposed on domestic subsidies.... |

This paper develops a framework for competitiveness that incorporates path dependency within production regions. Patterns of technological innovation, product development, institutions, and market orientation follow a certain local path. This evolution creates regional economies that emerge with unexpected competitive advantage. The model draws on previous work looking at, among other things, induced innovation. The framework is applied here to the major regional tomato producers in North America. The paper examines the role of various institutions (grower associations, governments, research institutions, and support industry) in influencing the path along which a regional sector evolves. |

Pharmaceutical industry belongs to the most innovative branches in Hungary. However as a consequence of increasing development costs and the strong competition on the market the means of gaining competitive advantage has become a focal point of the pharmaceutical companies’ strategy. Economic performance is highly dependent on research and knowledge and economic success is determined how companies are able to apply this knowledge and skills so how flourishing the product or technological development becomes. Only those branches and companies will gain competitive advantage that are able to compete on knowledge and technology. Since science and technology are considered to be the most important source of economic development, it contributes to the more... |

The study objectifies, by means of a group of indicators, to evaluate the competitiveness of the Brazilian sugar in the international trade. The indicator market-share evidenced its significant importance, considering that Brazil was responsible for 40,61% of the sugar commercialized in the international market in 2005. About the competitiveness front to other countries and other products, the indicator relative advantage in the export also discloses the advantage competitive of the Brazilian sugar. As for participation of the sugar in the total of the Brazilian exportations, the growth is substantial, having increased its representation in 95% in the analyzed period. The participation of the commercial balance of the sugar in the GIP Brazilian... |

The FSMA appears to be a major undertaking with a very large responsibility placed on the FDA. It would seem that bottlenecks to exporting are bound to appear which will be very frustrating for Canadian firms. It is important for Canadian firms and Canadian policy makers to work hard to ensure that temporary bottlenecks do not become permanent inhibitors of trade. The Canadian government needs to understand industry concerns and use any mechanisms – including those in the NAFTA – to initiate consultations with the US. Given the likely lags in implementation, North American food markets are likely to exhibit considerable disequilibrium over the near term. Trade flows will be affected. As the implementation programs of the FSMA become more transparent, more... |

The research based on primary data examines the answers given by Hungarian farms to the challenges of the changing economic environment following the accession to the European Union. The experience shows that the Hungarian farms have given basically false answers to the changing economic relation system. The subsidies have emerged on the market as "visible hands" and by allowing their impact which distorted the economic rationality, the basic economic aspects of production have been ignored. In the near future it will be especially important to liquidate this abnormal situation. This step will definitely indicate the demand to separate the social and producing agriculture, providing ground for the spreading of farmers’ cooperation. |

The area of the North-Hungarian Region is 13,429 km2, which is 14.4% of the country’s territory. In terms of area and population the region lies in fourth place in Hungary. The region is remarkable for the beauty of its landscapes, which are rich in untouched natural values with its significant ecological potential. Among its natural treasures we can find medicinal, thermal and mineral water springs. The wine producing regions of Eger and Gyöngyös are well known in Europe, while Tokaj is world famous. Significant problems in the North-Hungarian Region are unemployment exceeding the national average, caused by adaptation and modernisation crises, low-level employment, and the concentrated appearance of underdeveloped settlements and population groups. As... |

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) which was signed into law in January, 2011 represents a major initiative to improve food safety in the US. The legislation mandates the US Food and Drug Administration with developing a regulatory system to implement the Act. As yet, the full effect of the Act cannot be evaluated because the regulatory requirements are yet to be developed. There is little doubt, however, that those firms, both domestic and foreign, that wish to supply US consumers with food will face a considerable increase in regulatory costs. This paper outlines the major requirements of the FSMA and suggests how the regulatory burden may fall on foreign versus US domestic suppliers. Areas where Canadian firms may be disadvantaged relative to US... |
