Performance and intestinal health of broilers inoculated with nalidixic acid-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium and treated with organic acids R. Bras. Zootec.
Rocha,Tatiane Martins; Andrade,Maria Auxiliadora; Souza,Eliete Silva e; Stringhini,José Henrique; Café,Marcos Barcellos; Rezende,Cíntia Silva Minafra e; Pôrto,Regiani Nascimento Gagno.
An experiment with 630 one-day-old chicks experimentally inoculated with Salmonella Typhimurium was performed to evaluate the effects of an organic acid blend (benzoic, fumaric and 2-hydroxi-4-methylltio-butanoic - HMTBa) on intestinal health and performance. The experimental challenge with Salmonella Typhimurium occurred in two different routes of administration: via crop on the first day after hatching, and via feed, offered from seven to 14 days of age. These groups were treated with organic acids in a 3 × 2 (agent versus acid) factorial arrangement. Chicks treated with organic acids had higher weight gain, mean live weight and better feed conversion at 14 days of age, and higher weight gain at 28 days of age. Chicks treated with organic acids...

POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION DETECTION OF AVIAN LEUKOSIS VIRUS DNA IN VACCINES USED IN POULTRY Rev Salud Anim.
Acevedo,Ana María; Rodríguez,Edisleidy; Uffo,Odalys; Relova,Damarys; Noda,Julia; Díaz de Arce,Heidy.
Avian leukosis viruses (ALV) provoke a variety of trasmissible bening and malign tumoral diseases affecting birds. Chickens are affected by six subgroups of ALV designs A, B, C, D, E and J of more recent world dissemination. These viruses are potential contaminants of live vaccines used in poultry. In order to research the presence of DNA from ALVs as contaminants of viral commercial vaccines to be used in poultry, different Marek´s disease vaccines were screened by a reported polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay designed to detect all subgroups of ALVs. DNA samples extracted from seven vaccines were submitted to PCR using primers for a conserved region of env gene of HPRS-103. ALV sequences were detected in seven samples (100%). The methodology employed...

Heavy metals in vegetables and potential risk for human health Scientia Agricola
Guerra,Fernando; Trevizam,Anderson Ricardo; Muraoka,Takashi; Marcante,Nericlenes Chaves; Canniatti-Brazaca,Solange Guidolin.
Ingestion of vegetables containing heavy metals is one of the main ways in which these elements enter the human body. Once entered, heavy metals are deposited in bone and fat tissues, overlapping noble minerals. Slowly released into the body, heavy metals can cause an array of diseases. This study aimed to investigate the concentrations of cadmium, nickel, lead, cobalt and chromium in the most frequently consumed foodstuff in the São Paulo State, Brazil and to compare the heavy metal contents with the permissible limits established by the Brazilian legislation. A value of intake of heavy metals in human diets was also calculated to estimate the risk to human health. Vegetable samples were collected at the São Paulo General Warehousing and Centers Company,...

Chemical amendment and phytostabilization of an industrial residue contaminated with Zn and Cd Scientia Agricola
Santos,Fabiana Soares dos; Magalhães,Márcio Osvaldo Lima; Mazur,Nelson; Amaral Sobrinho,Nelson Moura Brasil do.
Phytostabilisation of a contaminated soil with heavy metals is considered a very appropriate technology to reduce erosion and dispersion of contaminants. A greenhouse study was conducted to evaluate the effects of both chemical amendments (calcium silicate and brewery sludge), and phytoremediation using the grass Brachiaria decumbens, on an industrial residue contaminated with Zn and Cd (industrial residue). Industrial residue samples placed into 30 L containers were amended with 20% brewery sludge, calcium silicate (2%, 3%), and 20% of brewery sludge + calcium silicate (2.5%, 4%), and were compared to the control treatment (non-amended residue). After pH stabilization, B. decumbens plants were grown on all treatments in order to evaluate the ability of...

The increasing demand for propolis has caused a raise in its production. However, an increasingly pesticide-dependent agriculture is a great concern with regard to bees, their produce and environmental contamination. Current analysis evaluates the presence of pesticides (organochlorines, organophosphates, pyrethroids, carbamates, herbicides, fungicides and acaricides) in samples of propolis from the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Beekeepers from several localities in the state provided samples of propolis (50), which were collected, stored in non-toxic plastic bags and maintained in a freezer for analyses. Possible pesticide residues were examined by gas chromatography method but no pesticide residues were detected in the examined propolis samples. Propolis...

The impacts of land use changes in the mercury flux in the Madeira River, Western Amazon Anais da ABC (AABC)
Lacerda,Luiz D.; Bastos,Wanderley R.; Almeida,Marcelo D..
Changes in hydrochemistry and Hg distribution in the Madeira River from Porto Velho to the confluence with the Amazon River were studied in two cruises in 1997 and 2002. Water conductivity was similar in both periods, but the pH was significantly higher in 2002, in particular along the middle reaches of the river. Total suspended matter concentrations also increased from 1997 to 2002 along the same river portion, which is a result of forest conversion to other land uses, in particular pastures and agriculture accelerated during the interval between the cruises. Dissolved Hg concentrations were similar along the river in both cruises, but particulate Hg concentrations increased significantly along the middle portion of the river, although the suspended...

Bioaccumulation of mercury, cadmium, zinc, chromium, and lead in muscle, liver, and spleen tissues of a large commercially valuable catfish species from Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Arantes,Fábio P.; Savassi,Lourenço A.; Santos,Hélio B.; Gomes,Marcos V.T.; Bazzoli,Nilo.
The increasing amounts of heavy metals entering aquatic environments can result in high accumulation levels of these contaminants in fish and their consumers, which pose a serious risk to ecosystems and human health. We investigated the concentrations of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) in muscle, liver, and spleen tissues of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans specimens collected from two sites on the Paraopeba River, Brazil. The level of heavy metals concentrations in the tissues was often higher in viscera (i.e. liver and spleen) than in muscle, and thus, the viscera should not be considered for human consumption. Correlations between metal concentrations and fish size were not significant. Although the levels of muscle...

Action of Canavalia ensiformis in remediation of contaminated soil with sulfentrazone Bragantia
Madalão,João Carlos; Souza,Matheus Freitas de; Silva,Alberto Antônio; Silva,Daniel Valadão; Jakelaitis,Adriano; Pereira,Gustavo Antônio Mendes.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) as a potential remediator of sulfentrazone in the soil. The experiment was conducted under field conditions in a complete randomised block design. The treatments consisted of soils with and without herbicide application as well as the absence and presence of C. ensiformis cultivation associated with incorporation into the soil or the removal of shoots of C. ensiformis. Sorghum was planted as a bioindicator to evaluate the remediation efficiency of jack bean. Sulfentrazone application in areas without C. ensiformis cultivation decreased plants stands, productivity, and height of sorghum compared to treatments where C. ensiformis was cultivated. Sorghum cultivated in succession to C....

Influence of effluents from a Wastewater Treatment Plant on nutrient distribution in a coastal creek from southern Brazil BABT
Santos,Isaac Rodrigues; Costa,Ronaldo Cataldo; Freitas,Ubiratan; Fillmann,Gilberto.
The hypothesis that effluents treated through activated sludge process cause changes in nutrient biogeochemistry of receiving water bodies was investigated in Vieira creek, southern Brazil. Dissolved oxygen, suspended matter, and pH did not vary among the sampling stations. Nutrient, biochemical oxygen demand, and conductivity values were significantly higher downstream from the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) effluents. Further downstream, nitrate concentrations were higher due to ammonium nitrification, organic matter remineralization and/or the occurrence of unidentified sources. Per capita nutrient emission factors were estimated to be 0.16 kg P.yr-1 and 4.14 kg N.yr-1. Under pristine conditions, low N:P ratios were observed, which were significantly...

A simple approach to integrate the ecotoxicological and chemical data for the establishment of environmental risk levels BABT
Cesar,Augusto; Abessa,Denis Moledo de Souza; Pereira,Camilo Dias Seabra; Santos,Aldo Ramos; Fernández,Nuria; Choueri,Rodrigo Brasil; DelValls,Tomas Angel.
In this work, multivariate and numeric methods were used to integrate the chemical and ecotoxicological data obtained for the sediments from the Santos Estuarine System, and for the vicinity of the discharges of the Submarine Sewage Outfall of Santos, in order to establish more accurately the environmental risks, identify the priority areas and thus provide guidance to control the programs and public policies. For both the datasets, the concentrations which exceeded numeric sediment guidelines tended to be associated to toxicity. For the estuary, this trend was corroborated by the correlations between the toxicity and Cu and PAHs levels, whereas for the sewage outfall region, this was observed through the correlation between the toxicity and Hg contents....
