'Effective prices' as a device to analyze the impact of the Agenda 2000 and Mid-Term Review policy reforms on dairy and beef: measurement and simulation results for Germany AgEcon
Jongeneel, Roelof A..
The Agenda 2000 and the Mid-Term Review introduced a complex combination of policy changes for beef and dairy. It is not clear to what extent the package will influence production decisions. This study proposes a simple method for incorporating the effect of direct payments into the analysis of cow herd response. Effective support prices are derived by adjusting the Agenda 2000 reductions in dairy and beef support prices to reflect the compensation given to farmers in terms of direct payments and premiums. Following the Mid-Term Review different assumptions are made with respect to the extent to which these payments are, or are perceived as being coupled to production. The effective prices obtained for Germany are used in a simulation model to assess the...

Third-Party Facilitation of Investments in Private Enforcement Capital: Evidence from Armenian Dairy Industry AgEcon
Shanoyan, Aleksan; Gow, Hamish R.; Peterson, H. Christopher; Ross, Brent.
Globalization and the changing structure of agri-food procurement channels have forced governments and international development community to shift their efforts towards linking farmers to markets through high value added contractual marketing relationships. A critical pre-condition for establishing economically sustainable value chain linkages is the presence of effective contract enforcement mechanisms. In many countries both public and private contract enforcement is poor resulting in high hold-up risk and underinvestment into relationships. This creates an immense challenge for donors and policy makers in facilitating sustainable relationships along the supply chain. This study explores the key elements in the design and implementation of assistance...

Importance of Cost Offsets for Dairy Farms Meeting a Nutrient Application Standard AgEcon
Ribaudo, Marc; Agapoff, Jean.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires concentrated animal feeding operations to develop and implement a comprehensive nutrient management plan. Changes in manure management to meet nutrient application standards will generally increase production costs. Some of these costs can be offset by savings from replacing commercial fertilizer with manure nutrients, and through financial assistance programs such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). A manure application cost model was used to examine the costs to confined dairy farms of meeting nutrient application standards, and the ability of fertilizer offsets and EQIP to reduce these costs.

Building producer loyalty in Malaysia's fresh milk supply chain AgEcon
Boniface, Bonaventure; Gyau, Amos; Stringer, Randy; Umberger, Wendy J..
The paper presents results from a survey of 133 dairy producers in Malaysia, and identifies how Malaysian milk buyers can build a loyal customer base with their suppliers as a means to secure uninterrupted milk supplies. A structural equation model was conducted to test the conceptual model using AMOS 17.0 software. The results show that whereas timely and collaborative communication, price satisfaction and cultural fit influence positively suppliers’ contractual and competence trust in their buyers, power dependency negatively influences competence trust. Furthermore, suppliers’ trust in their buyers will eventually lead to loyalty. The principal implication is that milk processors and other buyers need to engage in collaborative communication with the...

RISK BALANCING STRATEGIES IN THE FLORIDA DAIRY INDUSTRY: AN APPLICATION OF CONDITIONAL VALUE AT RISK AgEcon
Zylstra, Michael J.; Kilmer, Richard L.; Uryasev, Stanislav.
Legislation has prompted changes in milk price volatility. Milk price volatility impacts the producer's exposure to business risk which is compound by the firms financial risk. Financial risk is a function of the firms capital structure. In the short run it is difficult for the producer to significantly change the firms capital structure and therefore balance increased business risk with reduced financial risk. The producer can however reduce financial and business risk by using futures contracts to lock in a price for milk produced. The producer's risk preferences dictate the producer's hedge ratio. Using the return on equity as a profitability measure and the conditional value at risk as a risk measure the optimal hedge ratio is derived for various...

Economics of Intensive Grazing in Dairy Production In the Mid-Atlantic AgEcon
Lichtenberg, Erik; Minegishi, Kota; Hanson, James C.; Johnson, Dale M..
Dairy production in the US has experienced a marked increase in the size of dairy operations over time. Even as total production has grown over time, smaller operations have been disappearing. Consequently, the viability of smaller dairy farms has become an important policy concern in regions like the Mid-Atlantic where small dairy farms account for a significant share of farm enterprises. Previous studies suggest that dairy farming based on intensive (rotational) grazing, as opposed to traditional confined-feeding operations, may make it possible for smaller operations to remain economically viable. However, the short term nature of the data used in these studies limits the robustness of these findings. We utilize a unique panel of financial data...

The New Zealand Dairy Cooperatives’ Adaptation to Changing Market Conditions AgEcon
Nilsson, Jerker; Ohlsson, Camilla.
This article examines the market conditions, the strategies, and the organizational structures of agricultural cooperatives. Based on the growing literature on cooperative organizational models, it is expected that the new organizational patterns in the New Zealand dairy cooperatives in the early 2000s are a consequence of market changes. Case studies of the three cooperatives are conducted, focusing on the organizational structures in terms of collective versus individualized attributes. The dissolution of the New Zealand Dairy Board created new market opportunities for the cooperatives. Hence, the co-operatives had reason to develop new market strategies, and in order to pursue these well, they changed their organizational structures. The observations...

Exporting: an avenue for dairy cooperatives AgEcon
Spatz, Karen J.; Brainich, Eric.
One avenue of growth for U.S. dairy cooperatives is exporting. Long- term market development is one ingredient for success in international sales. Given possible trade liberalization, cooperatives should evaluate their position in the global marketplace and develop a plan to ensure growth and stability for members. The first part of this report evaluates world dairy market conditions. It looks at trends in world trade and cost of production and policies of major milk-producing countries. Various marketing organizations and practices such as joint ventures could be employed to facilitate exports. A description of the marketing strategies used by the New Zealand Dairy Board illustrates how these practices have been utilized for a successful international...

Going micro: Analysing SAM multipliers for the dairy chain on Reunion Island AgEcon
D'Haese, Marijke F.C.; Lecomte, Philippe; Alary, Veronique; D'Haese, Luc; Schipper, Robert A..
This poster presents a study on the multiplier effects in the dairy chain on Reunion Island. This Indian Ocean island is one of the French overseas departments. However, it struggles with similar problems as the developing areas in its neighbourhood, high levels of unemployment especially being a major concern. The agricultural sector justifies the state support it receives by stressing its role in the creation of employment and economic activity. Our focus is on the dairy sector of the Island, which is relatively recent and highly organized. Local milk production has increased over the years and our aim is to calculate the economywide impact of this trend. We use a social accounting matrix with disaggregated accounts for the dairy sector to calculate the...

MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ASSOCIATED WITH HIGH-PRODUCING U.S. DAIRY HERDS AgEcon
Ott, Stephen L..
The National Animal Health Monitoring Systems (NAHMS) Dairy +96 Study of dairy herds in 20 states examined herd management practices that varied between high-producing (top 25%) and low-producing (bottom 25%) U.S. dairy herds. Only 100% Holstein herds were included in the study. Within four size categories (30-99 cows, 100-199 cows, 200-499 cows, 500 or more cows) herds were ranked by milk production per cow. High-producing herds were more likely to use Dairy Herd Improvement Association records or an on-farm computer system than low-producing herds. High-producing herds were also more likely to feed a total mixed ration, use forage test results in balancing feed rations, use bovine somatotropin (bST) and/or systematic prostaglandins, and vaccinate against...

Methods of Change and Financial Performance of Dairy Farms Before and After a Switch to Management Intensive Grazing AgEcon
Taylor, Philip Eugene.
Interest in Management Intensive Grazing (MIG) of dairy cattle has increased during the last 2 decades. Most dairy producers utilizing MIG were former confinement or non-intensive pasture operations while the others started their operation with MIG. While research publications tout the financial and other benefits of MIG, often comparing them to non-MIG dairies, and anecdotal evidence in popular farm press has shown MIG in a favorable light, comparing a MIG dairy farm to itself before and after the management switch has not been a subject of research scrutiny. Knowing the potential impact of a switch to MIG prior to making a management decision to do so would be a significant piece of information for a dairy farm to understand if contemplating such a...

LIVESTOCK SECTORS IN THE ECONOMIES OF EASTERN EUROPE AND THE FORMER SOVIET UNION; TRANSITION FROM PLAN TO MARKET AND THE ROAD AHEAD AgEcon
Bjornlund, Britta; Cochrane, Nancy J.; Haley, Mildred M.; Hoskin, Roger; Liefert, Olga; Paarlberg, Philip L..
This report examines the restructuring of the livestock sectors in five countries: Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, and Romania. All five countries experienced a decline in both animal inventories and meat output during the early years of transition away from a centrally planned economy. ERS, in cooperation with Purdue University, developed five general equilibrium models depicting the economies of each nation. The models were used to evaluate capital investment at different stages of production; the rise in land prices that would result from a better functioning land market; reduced marketing costs; increased availability of credit; and, the creation of off-farm employment to draw labor out of agriculture. The study identifies potential trade and...

Issues in Modelling the Australian Dairy Industry: Joint Products, Market Power and Deregulation AgEcon
MacAulay, T. Gordon; Owen, Kate M.; O'Donnell, Christopher J..
This paper reports on an expanded and revised version of the spatial equilibrium model of the Australian dairy industry developed by MacAulay (1997). In the expanded version there is demand for five manufactured products. The transformation from bulk milk to final product is modelled by considering milk and dairy products in terms of their primary components, milk fat and protein. For market milk, a variable element was added to the margin to replicate the effects of market power in the processor to retail chain. Some implications for the deregulation of the Australian dairy industry are noted.

Land O' Lakes AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Barton, David G..
The case begins with an examination of Land O' Lakes' diversified portfolio of businesses. The business had undergone significant changes since 1998 - it dominated market share in butter and deli cheese, had become the largest crop protection, plant nutrient, and feed manufacturer in the US, and was the fourth largest US seed company. Land O'Lakes used mergers, joint ventures, acquisitions of public and private firms, and divestitures/closing of assets to restructure its portfolio to build its portfolio. The main issue was to evaluate its diversified portfolio of businesses and find ways to improve future performance.

Estimation of Political Oligopoly Power of Domestic Producers in the Korean Raw-Milk Market AgEcon
Jeon, Sang-Gon.
This paper estimates the political oligopoly power of domestic raw-milk producers in the Korean dairy market. Domestic raw-milk price for fluid use is decided exogenously by the government. The government announces the reference price of raw-milk price for fluid use to protect the domestic raw-milk producers from the potential market power of domestic dairy processors, because historically many small-sized domestic producers are a relatively weaker group than domestic processors. Here, this study has two questions: one is about how effectively the government protects the producers and the other is about how much the producers exert their political power against the government to raise the reference price in this process. Furthermore, this paper also tests...

Effects of Nutrient Restrictions on Confined Animal Facilities: Insights from a Structural Model AgEcon
Baerenklau, Kenneth A.; Nergis, Nermin; Schwabe, Kurt A..
Nutrient emissions from animal feeding operations continue to degrade water and air quality. New regulations will limit the amounts of nutrients that can be locally applied to land. In this article, a structural-dynamic model of a livestock-crop operation is calibrated with data from a representative farm and is used to predict the effects of nitrogen regulations. Policy simulations clarify the importance of dynamic elements and demonstrate three main results: (1) cost estimates are relatively high; (2) cross-media pollution effects are potentially large; and (3) improved input management appears most promising for reducing both emissions and waste management costs. Implications for policy and future research are discussed.

2008 Michigan Dairy Farm Business Analysis Summary AgEcon
Wittenberg, Eric; Wolf, Christopher A..
This report summarizes the financial and production records of 116 dairy farms from throughout Michigan in 2008. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from milk and dairy animal sales. The records came from Michigan State University’s TelFarm project and the Farm Credit Service system in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. The farms are larger than would be the average dairy farm in Michigan. While considerable variation in the data exists, average values are reported in the summary tables and discussion that follows.

Entry, Exit, and Structural Change in Pennsylvania's Dairy Sector AgEcon
Stokes, Jeffrey R..
Data on the number of Pennsylvania dairy farms by size category are analyzed in a Markov chain setting to determine factors affecting entry, exit, expansion, and contraction within the sector. Milk prices, milk price volatility, land prices, policy, and cow productivity all impact structural change in Pennsylvania's dairy sector. Stochastic simulation analysis suggests that the number of dairy farms in Pennsylvania will likely fall by only 2.0 percent to 2.5 percent annually over the next 20 years, indicating that dairy farming in Pennsylvania is likely to be a significant enterprise for the state in the foreseeable future.
