Foliar application of silicon decreases wheat blast symptoms without impairing photosynthesis Bragantia
Oliveira,Tassia Boeno; Aucique-Pérez,Carlos Eduardo; Rodrigues,Fabrício de Ávila.
ABSTRACT Considering the importance of blast, caused by Pyricularia oryzae, to impact wheat yield, this study investigated whether the foliar spray of potassium silicate (PS) could affect the photosynthesis of wheat plants and its potential to reduce disease symptoms. The Exp. 1 aimed to determine the effect of the foliar spray of PS on the photosynthetic performance of plants and was arranged in a completely randomized design with six treatments (plants sprayed with PS rates of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, and 12.5 g·L-1 at 35 days after emergence) and six replications. The leaf gas exchange (net CO2 assimilation rate (A), internal CO2 concentration (Ci), stomatal conductance to water vapor (gs), and transpiration rate (E)) as well as fluorescence of chlorophyll...

Field validation of a Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana exo-antigens ELISA for diagnosing tegumentary leishmaniasis in regions of Leishmania (Viannia) predominance BJID
Soares,Killarney Ataide; Urdapilleta,Ada Amália Ayala; Santos,Gilcilene Maria dos; Carneiro,Andréa Lisboa; Gomes,Ciro Martins; Roselino,Ana Maria; Sampaio,Raimunda Nonata Ribeiro.
Background: Several tests are performed to obtain better accuracy when diagnosing American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL). It is believed that antigens released via secretion, excretion and metabolism are more specific than are antigens released by the lysis of Leishmaniaparasites. Such antigens are known as exo-antigens (exo-Ag) and are formed from products released by cultured parasites in a way that is similar to that in which they cause infections in hosts. Objective: We attempted to validate a Leishmania mexicanaELISA exo-Ag for ATL diagnosis in Midwestern Brazil. Methods: A total of 281 patients were included in the study. We analysed pre-treatment blood from 98 ATL patients; out of those, 85.7% and 14.3% had cutaneous and mucosal forms,...

Factors associated with uncontrolled asthma in Porto Alegre, Brazil BJMBR
Dalcin,P.T.R.; Menegotto,D.M.; Zanonato,A.; Franciscatto,L.; Soliman,F.; Figueiredo,M.; Pereira,R.P..
The prevalence of uncontrolled and controlled asthma, and the factors associated with uncontrolled asthma were investigated in a cross-sectional study. Patients aged 11 years with confirmed asthma diagnosis were recruited from the outpatient asthma clinic of Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, Brazil. Patients were excluded if they had other chronic pulmonary disease. They underwent an evaluation by a general questionnaire, an asthma control questionnaire (based on the 2006 Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines), assessment of inhaled device technique and pulmonary function tests. Asthma was controlled in 48 of 275 patients (17.5%), partly controlled in 74 (26.9%) and uncontrolled in 153 (55.6%). In the univariate analysis, asthma severity was...

Challenges in shrimp aquaculture due to viral diseases: distribution and biology of the five major penaeid viruses and interventions to avoid viral incidence and dispersion BJM
Seibert,Caroline H.; Pinto,Aguinaldo R..
Shrimp aquaculture has been dramatically affected by many pathogenic diseases, mainly caused by five viruses: IHHNV, YHV, TSV, WSSV, and IMNV. Here we provide a state-of-the-art overview of these shrimp viruses, with emphasis on distribution, pathology, morphology, and genomic organization, in addition to current diagnostic methods and intervention practices.

Control of potato early blight with triazole fungicide using preventive and curative spraying, or a forecasting system Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Mantecón,Jorge D.
During the 2005 and 2006 growing seasons, two field trials were conducted at the INTA Balcarce Experimental Station (Argentina) to study the control of potato early blight (Alternaria solani). Uncut virus-free seed tubers of potato (Solanum tuberosum) cv. Pampeana PNTA that were susceptible to early blight and resistant to late blight were machine planted in 0.20-m intervals in rows spaced 0.8 mapart. Each plot consisted of 4 rows that were 5 meters long. Difenoconazole (Bogard 25EC) was sprayed weekly at a rate of 0.25 L· ha-1 or bi-weekly at a rate of 0.50 L· ha-1 on a preventive program and on a curative program. The same treatments and rates were also applied when the forecast model (Specware 6.02) reached 300 P-Days after emergence, and applications...

Relative susceptibility of peach rootstocks to crown gall and Phytophthora root and crown rot in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Guzman,Gonzalo; Latorre,Bernardo A; Torres,Rene; Wilcox,Wayne F.
Crown gall (Agrobacterium tumefaciens) and Phytophthora root and crown rot (PRCR), caused by P. cryptogea, are two major limiting factors affecting peach (Prunus pérsica) production in Chile. At present, Nemaguard is the most important rootstock used in peach orchards, and although several clonal rootstocks are under development worldwide, there is little information regarding their susceptibility to crown gall and PRCR. Therefore this investigation was undertaken to study the susceptibility to A. tumefaciens and P. cryptogea of the clonally propagated rootstocks Cadman®-Avimag (P. pérsica x P. davidiana), Mr.S 2/5 (P. cerasifera x P. spinosa), Viking ([P. pérsica x P. davidiana] x [P. dulcís 'Jordanolo'x P. blireiana]), and Nemaguard (P. pérsica x P....

Evaluation of the antifungal activity by plant extracts against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Polyanna Alves; Oliveira,Denilson Ferreira; Prado,Ney Robson Taironi do; Carvalho,Douglas Antônio de; Carvalho,Gilvane Aparecida de.
Aiming to develop more efficient and environmental friendly methods than those available to control Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz, which causes blister spot in coffee trees, a search for plants able to produce substances active against such pathogen was carried out. Thus, extracts of 48 plant species, collected at Alto Rio Grande region, in Minas Gerais, were prepared and submitted to in vitro assays with that fungus. The best results were obtained with the extracts prepared from Digitalis lanata Ehrh, Origanum manjorona L., Plantago lanceolata Hook. and Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni, which inhibited C. gloeosporioides spores germination. After dilution of some active extracts with aqueous 1 % Tween 80 solution in a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio...
