Predictive distribution maps of rodent reservoir species of zoonoses in Southern America Mastozool. neotrop.

We model potential distribution for three species of rodents known to be reservoirs of zoonotic diseases: Calomys musculinus, Oligoryzomys flavescens and O. longicaudatus. These models provide general distribution hypotheses obtained using environmental data from record localities. Satellite remote sensing is then used to extrapolate climatic and ecological features of potentially suitable habitats for these rodents. In the three species mapped, we found high overall correspondence between predicted (based on environmental data) and specimen based distributions. Predation pressure, food availability, and activity may be affected by level of moonlight and climatic conditions. While many nocturnal mammals reduce activity at high lunar illumination to avoid predators (lunarphobia), most visually-oriented nocturnal primates and birds increase activity in bright nights (lunarphilia) to improve foraging efficiency. Environmental factors related to entry into and ascent of fish in the experimental ladder located close to Itaipu Dam Neotropical Ichthyology

We evaluated the seasonality of the ascent of fish in an experimental ladder located close to Itaipu Dam, and its relationships to reproduction, temperature, river level and discharge. Samplings of fish and measurements of abiotic factors were performed from February, 1995 through January, 1997, in two resting pools of the ladder. Pool A was located 10 m above the mean level of the Paraná River; Pool B was located at the upper end of the ladder, at a height of 27 m. Autoregressive models were used to remove the temporal dependence between observations. Environmental factors predicting fish community structure in two neotropical rivers in Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology

In order to assess the organization patterns of the fish communities in the Jogui and Iguatemi rivers, we collected fish with gill nets tri-monthly from November 1999 to August 2000. Hypostomus ancistroides and Parauchenipterus galeatus were the most abundant species in the Jogui and Iguatemi rivers, respectively. Longitudinal variation was more important than seasonal in determining the species composition in both rivers, and the difference between seasons was not statistically significant. Altitude was the most important factor determining species distribution.

La détérioration de la qualité des eaux de la lagune de Boughrara, conséquence de divers apports polluants et d’échanges d’eaux limités avec la mer, s’est traduite par un accroissement sévère de l’eutrophisation du milieu se manifestant notamment par d’importantes proliférations microalgales. L’analyse de l’évolution de l’ensemble des groupes phytoplanctoniques a montré que les périodes de forte biomasse algale sont caractérisées par des développements monospécifiques. L’importance relative croissante de la classe des dinoflagellés se manifestent par un net accroissement du rapport dinoflagellés / diatomées. Se determinó la variación espacio-temporal de la biomasa de los grupos morfo-funcionales de macroalgas y su relación con las variables ambientales: temperatura, salinidad, oxígeno disuelto y precipitaciones en dos localidades (laguna y playa) de pastizales al Norte de Ciego de Ávila desde marzo de 2010 a febrero de 2011. Las colectas se realizaron utilizando marco cuadrado de 25 cm de lado y se tomaron 15 unidades de muestreo en cada sitio. This work, it is applied a unidirectional and stationary model for estimating the dissolved oxygen distribution in the area of the Gulf of Batabanó, starting from the influence of physical-biological parameters (marine currents, temperature, salinity, photosynthesis and respiration). In this first approach, estimates of the dissolved oxygen concentration are obtained for Ensenada de la Broa, with an error of 0.2693 mg/L, while for the rest of the Gulf the estimate error oscillated between -4.13 y -4.69 mg/L. Identificación y evaluación de los impactos ambientales en las zonas de plataforma marino costera I, II y III. Zonas de Gestión I y II. OceanDocs

Conocer como el hombre ha impactado las zonas de plataforma marino costera I, II y III, es el principal objetivo del presente trabajo. Se inventariaron y evaluaron un total de 382 impactos, de ellos 302 eran negativos, 74 positivos y 6 neutros. Dichos impactos estaban recogidos en 11 Estudios de Evaluación de Impacto Ambiental. Es importante aclarar que los resultados obtenidos se restringen solo a la información contenida en estos estudios. Para la evaluación se empleó la Matriz de Evaluación Rápida de Impactos Ambientales (RIAM). Cet article présente les résultats d'une étude comparative des caractéristiques physico-chimiques (température, turbidité, salinité, pH, concentration en O2 dissous, en phosphates, nitrates, nitrites, ammoniaque)au sein d'une structure d'aquaculture extensive (acadja-enclos)ou habitat artificiel pour poissons et dans l'eau libre environnante. The age-class distribution of the Brazilian flathead Percophis brasiliensis in relation to environmental variables in spring and winter, and the growth of both sexes, were studied in the SW Atlantic Coastal System (SACS)(34°S-31° S). Growth was studied from 1449 individuals (n=853, spring (1998 + 2000), n=596, winter (2004)) to which size (TL), sex, and age were determined. Age was determined considering that an opaque plus a hyaline band (present in the transverse section of the sagitta otolith) represented 1 year of life. La distribución espacial de los pastos marinos depende de las condiciones ambientales presentes, destacándose la profundidad, temperatura, salinidad, sustrato y nutrientes. La plataforma continental de La Guajira presenta extensas praderas de pastos marinos dominadas por Thalassia testudinum, las cuales representan más del 80 % del total nacional. El mitílido Brachidontes rodriguezii es el organismo estructurante de una compleja comunidad intermareal que se desarrolla sobre los sustratos intermareales duros (cuarcíticos y limo- loessoides), en el sudeste de la provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina). Salinas por su posición en la península de Santa Elena está situada en el límite noroeste del Golfo de Guayaquil y, debido a que la línea costanera se curva hacia el noroeste y se coloca por ello fuera de la acción de la corriente de Humboldt, aumenta progresivamente la precipitación hacia el norte (PMRC, 1995). Se realiza el estudio de las especies de foraminíferos bentónicos del área de Salinas y se hace la relación de las especies más frecuentes: Elphidium articulatum, f, typica; reophax cf. guttiferus; Rotalia cubensis y Textularia secasensis con los factores ambientales: salinidad, temperatura, pH, oxígeno, profundidad, turbidez, alimentación y sustrato.

The role of the Mar Chiquita lagoon and its adjacent coastal area as nursery ground for fish larvae and juveniles and the factors which regulate their recruitment process, was evaluated. To do so, we analyzed the fish early life stages composition and spatio-temporal variation over the marine-estuarine gradient of the lagoon and its relationship with environmental factors; the diel variation of these stages in the immediate area at the mouth of the lagoon; and the source of the organic carbon which feed them on the mouth of the lagoon and adjacent coastal area, by using stable isotope analysis. Les larves de poissons téléostéens le long des côtes Est tunisiennes : distribution et abondance OceanDocs

Une campagne de prospection planctonique à été réalisée entre le 24 juin et le 7 juillet 2008 au large des côtes Est de la Tunisie depuis le Cap bon jusqu’à Ras Kapoudia. Les objectifs de cette campagne consistaient à étudier l’assemblage larvaire des poissons téléostéens et d’évaluer l’influence des facteurs environnementaux sur leur distribution spatiale. Au total 10832 larves ont été identifiées appartenant à 46 taxons. La distribution spatiale des larves a montré une grande variabilité interspécifique. En effet, plusieurs facteurs sont intervenus dans leur distribution. As a result of taxonomic analysis and the abundance of benthic polychaetes abtained from the subtidal area in five profiles with 15 stations at depths between 3 and 23 m. in Manta Bay, eight species were identified in march, the most abundant one being Cossura brunnea of the Cossuridae family. Eight species were identified in august, represented by the most abundant species, Paraonis gracilis from the Paraonidae family.
