Effects of croton urucurana extracts and crude resin on Anagasta kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) BABT
Silva,Luciana Barboza; Silva,Walciane; Macedo,Maria Ligia Rodrigues; Peres,Marize Terezinha Lopes Pereira.
Hundreds of plant species have been studied in order to find out the active ingredient responsible for their insecticidal activity against the pests of economic importance. To verify the insecticidal activity in the husk of stem of Croton urucurana Baillon 1864 (Euphorbiaceae) against Anagasta kuehniella Zeller 1879 (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), the methanolic (EMeOH) extract, dichloromethane fraction (FDM), ethyl acetate fraction (FAE) and crude resin, incorporated into an artificial diet were evaluated. EMeOH (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0%) and crude resin (2.0%) interfered with neither the weight nor the survival of fourth instar larvae and other analyzed parameters. FDM (2.0%) fraction caused mortality of 65%, and the artificial diet containing 2.0, 1.0 and 0.5% FAE...

Souza,C.A.M.; de-Carvalho,R.R.; Kuriyama,S.N.; Araujo,I.B.; Rodrigues,R.P.; Vollmer,R.S.; E.N.,Alves; Paumgartten,F.J.R..
The crude latex of Crown-of-Thorns (Euphorbia milii var. hislopii) is a potent plant molluscicide and a promising alternative to the synthetic molluscicides used in schistosomiasis control. The present study was undertaken to investigate the embryofeto-toxic potential of E. milii latex. The study is part of a comprehensive safety evaluation of this plant molluscicide. Lyophilized latex (0, 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight) in corn oil was given by gavage to Wistar rats (N = 100) from days 6 to 15 of pregnancy and cesarean sections were performed on day 21 of pregnancy. The numbers of implantation sites, living and dead fetuses, resorptions and corpora lutea were recorded. Fetuses were weighed, examined for external malformations, and fixed for visceral...

Abdallah,Walid Elsayed; Elsayed,Wael Mohamady; Hassan,Rasmia Ali; Nazif,Naglaa Mohammed; Ali,Mohammed Ibrahim; Abdelshafeek,Khaled Abdelhady.
Investigation of the lipid constituents of the aerial parts of Phyllanthus atropurpureus resulted in isolation and identification of the fatty acid mixture which consists of eight acids with linolenic acid as major and the unsaponifiable fraction that contain a series of hydrocabons, sterols, in addition to one triterpene (α-amyrin). The acetone insoluble fraction was found to contain two fatty alcohols and three n-hydrocabons in which the n-eicosane is the most abundant (44.16%). The flavonoidal constituents were isolated from ethyl acetate and butanol fractions which were identified as: luteolin-7-O-glucoside, kaempferol 3-O-(p-coumaroylglucoside), kaempferitrin, luteolin and kaempferol. Evaluation of different extracts as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors...

Photosynthesis and antioxidant activity in Jatropha curcas L. under salt stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Campos,Mariana Lins de Oliveira; Hsie,Bety Shiue de; Granja,João Antônio de Almeida; Correia,Rafaela Moura; Almeida-Cortez,Jarcilene Silva de; Pompelli,Marcelo Francisco.
Biodiesel is an alternative to petroleum diesel fuel. It is a renewable, biodegradable, and nontoxic biofuel. Interest in the production of biodiesel from Jatropha curcas L. seeds has increased in recent years, but the ability of J. curcas to grow in salt-prone areas, such as the Caatinga semiarid region, has received considerably meager attention. The aim of this study was to identify the main physiological processes that can elucidate the pattern of responses of J. curcas irrigated with saline water, which commonly occurs in the semiarid Caatinga region. This study measured the activity of the antioxidant enzymes involved in the scavenging of reactive oxygen species, which include catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), as well as malondialdehyde...

Cell wall hydrolases in the seeds of Euphorbia heterophylla L. during germination and early seedling development Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Suda,Cecilia N. K.; Buckeridge,Marcos S.; Giorgini,Jarbas F..
Activities of cell wall hydrolases of Euphorbia heterophylla L. (wild poinsettia) endosperm were investigated during pre- and post-emergence periods, defined as the time interval before and after 2.2 days from the start of imbibition, respectively. The activities of endo-beta-mannanase and beta-mannosidase are higher over the pre-emergence when compared to the post-emergence period and they may be involved in the process of germination in E. heterophylla. On the other hand, the activities of beta-galactosidase, beta-glucosidase, alpha-xylosidase, beta-xylosidase and glucanases, which hydrolyse CMC, xyloglucans from Hymenaea courbaril or Copaifera langsdorffii, xylan, Avicel and lichenan, are higher over the post-emergence period. Activity on laminarin...

Attractiveness of copperleaf-based bait to leaf-cutting ants Ciência Rural
Nagamoto,Nilson Satoru; Barbieri,Rafael Forti; Forti,Luiz Carlos; Cardoso,Sandra Regina de Sousa; Moreira,Sinara Maria; Lopes,Juliane Floriano Santos.
Leaves of copperleaf (Acalypha spp.) are greatly accepted by leaf-cutting ants and therefore used to maintain colonies in the laboratory. In order to determine the attractive potential of granulated bait of Acalypha wilkesiana leaves versus citrus pulp, currently used in commercial baits, an evaluation was performed, by using the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens rubropilosa as model. The handmade non-toxic baits contained powder (90% w/w) of either citrus pulp or A. wilkesiana were offered simultaneously in the foraging arena until the total loading of one of them. Results showed that copperleaf baits are less attractive than the citrus ones, which invalidates the viability of the substitution.

Chemical composition and yield of essential oil from three Croton species Ciência Rural
Souza,Giuliane Sampaio de; Bonilla,Oriel Herrera; Lucena,Eliseu Marlônio Pereira de; Barbosa,Yuri Pereira.
ABSTRACT: Marmeleiros are popularly known for the medicinal properties ascribed to their essential oils. This research aimed to analyze the essential oil of leaves from three Croton species (Croton argyrophylloides, Croton jacobinensis, and Croton sincorensis), to verify whether the daily time and harvest season in the year may interfere with their essential oils performance and composition. From each species, 1,500g of green leaves were harvested in Viçosa do Ceará - CE, at 6am and 12pm, during both dry and rainy seasons. Essential oil extraction was conducted by the method of water vapor drag and chemical profile was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The highest yield was obtained at 12pm in the dry season for C. argyrophylloides...
