The commercial market for high-value plant products is steadily increasing. Consumers are willingly paying premium prices for plants that originate from specific geographical regions or are produced according to certain agricultural management practices. This has significantly enhanced the market shares of organically grown plant products but has simultaneously increased the risk of food adulteration and fraudulent activities. Consequently, sophisticated analytical principles are currently being developed to enable discrimination of organic and conventional plants and ensure compliance with the regulations of organic agriculture. Some of the most promising principles for organic authentication are based on atomic spectroscopy which encompasses several... |

The project “Organic farming: social, ethical, economical, scientific and technical aspects in a global perspective” was founded by European Commission within the framework of Asia Link programme. The specific objective was the development of a curriculum on organic farming suitable to the Chinese educational framework, and the development of relevant learning and teaching tools supporting the implementation of the developed curriculum within the Chinese partners’ institutions. It consisted of four major components: seminars, visits abroad, PhD student mobility and summer schools. The developed curriculum consist of six major components for a total of 30 credits: a core course on organic farming (8 credits); four specific courses in biological system... |

Knowledge about organic agriculture is constantly changing and growing. Research related to organic agriculture at EU level nowadays plays an important role. Organic agriculture, being an integrated, holistic and multi-target approach, needs researchers who are trained to investigate poly-factorial and multi-level problems. For students and junior scientists, international seminars and exchange programs are necessary instruments to gain “state of the art” knowledge and skills from senior scientists in the field of organic agriculture. The QLIF training programme under WP7.4 provides training in the different aspects of ecological farming systems, but also offers an opportunity to discuss relevant and adequate research strategies and results. Within the EU... |

In organic farming, it is generally accepted that a long-term perspective spanning across the years is necessary for the sustainability of organic field management. This paper analyzes the crossing over of annual boundaries during an organic inspection in an attempt to show how the long-term perspective is learnt in the practical organic vegetable farming. Within the speech turns that refer across the years, two main topics emerged. The first is the nutrient management, which was connected with plant growth and environmental regulations. The second is the sequence of crop rotation, appearing both as a list, detached from the fields, and as a temporal process of the fields. A weed problem, caused by couch grass, was repeatedly referred to by the... |

The project has been designed to investigate potential effects of systemic constellations in agricultural contexts. The project invited farmers and rural extension workers to experiment with systemic constellations during three workshops. Specific situations have been set up, such as conversions to organic agriculture, farm transfer from generation to generation (including gender issues), risky investments, farm “survival” and family crises. The constellations proved to contribute to rapid and deep insights. Hidden potentials, which may lead to new solutions, became evident. After the constellations, the participants showed stronger self-esteem, higher decision-making power, enhanced creativity and activity. Several weeks after the workshops, selected... |

The forecasting tool SOPRA has been developed with the objective to optimize timing of monitoring and control measures of insect pests in fruit orchards. Phenologymodels were developed driven by solar radiation, air temperature and soil temperature on hourly basis including simulation of characteristic habitat conditions for Dysaphis plantaginea, Hoplocampa testudinea, Cydia pomonella, Grapholita lobarzewskii, Cacopsylla pyri, Rhagoletis cerasi, Anthonomus pomorum and Adoxophyes orana. On base of local weather data, age structure of pest populations is simulated and crucial events for management in organic and integrated production are announced. Through a web-interface, the simulation results are made available to consultants and growers... |
