Warum steigen Bergbetriebe aus dem Biolandbau aus? Organic Eprints
Flury, Christian; Ferjani, Ali.
Since 2005, the number of Swiss organic farms has been declining steadily contrary to the positive trend in demand. Between 2005 and 2009, 13 % of organic mountain farms were lost. In this context, we analyse the factors influencing a decision to opt out of mountain organic farming by using a written survey and logistic regression. The analysis shows that economic reasons (price of organic products, low direct payments), the time and effort of record-keeping and checks («Guidelines change too often») and problems obtaining suitable concentrated feed were the most commonly cited reasons for opting out. There is a high disposition towards opting out of organic farming, especially in the case of dairy farms. The regression analysis confirms the results of the...

Was kostet das Bio-Ei? Organic Eprints

Meili, Eric.

National status-quo reports on Collective Farmers Marketing Initatives in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Bahrdt, Katja; Sanders, Jürn; Schmid, Otto.
In general, data and scientific information on farmers’ cooperatives are very rare in Switzerland. There is no official statistic that collects the number and types of existing cooperatives in Switzerland. In view of the little information interviews with experts and an internet search has additionally been conducted. Collective actions of farmers have a long tradition in Switzerland. The earliest forms of collective actions in agricultural can be traced back to the management of common land and forest areas in early Germanic times. Like in most other European countries, the cooperative movement emerged in the second half of the 19 th century in Switzerland and experienced a rapid diffusion. Due to the protectionistic agricultural policy and guaranteed...

Organic conversion strategies for stockless farming systems Organic Eprints
Huxham, Sally K; Sparkes, Debbie L; Wilson, Paul.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. The identification of appropriate stockless organic conversion strategies will help farmers and growers in their decision to convert to organic production. The current practice of a two-year red clover/ryegrass ley conversion relies on subsidies to be economically viable. This standard conversion and six alternatives were tested on a sandy loam soil entering organic conversion. A test crop of winter wheat will be grown across the entire experimental area in the first fully organic year (2001/2002). Strategies containing a legume ley phase returned the greatest amount of nitrogen to the soil. At the end of the second year, pre-cultivation, there were no differences in soil mineral...

Cost and energy evaluation of organic cauliflower in sole crop and living mulch systems Organic Eprints
Ortolani, Livia; Kristensen, Hanne L.; Campanelli, Gabriele; Bavec, Martina; Bavec, Franc; von Fragstein, Peter; Bergmam, Astrid; Leteo, Fabrizio; Canali, Stefano.
This paper presents the findings of an assessment aimed to evaluate, in terms of cost and energy consumption, the introduction of living mulches in different organic vegetable systems producing cauliflower. The study was carried out in three European countries (IT, SLO and DK) in the frame of the InterVeg project (Core Organic II). The achievements demonstrated that, in economic terms, farmers’ choice of a specific technique, like living mulch instead of sole cropping, can be influenced by two key elements: human labor and fossil fuel consumption. Different organic systems have a different proportion in using the two inputs depending on the specific farm strategy.

Kosten der Belüftungsheuerzeugung in Boxen oder Ballen Organic Eprints
Nilles, Lisa; Klöble, Ulrike.
The production of ventilated barn hay results in a high quality fodder for ruminants. Nevertheless, this production method is still a niche in Germany even it is found in organic farming. Reasons are the few publications about required investments of the needed technology for hay drying in the barn. This article provides investment and energy costs for different drying techniques: for box hay drying three different farm sizes were compared, for bale hay drying only one farm size is calculated. Bale hay drying demands more power and investment cost as box hay drying of loose hay. Bale drying is more complicated than barn drying in that the number of bale drying locations in a barn is a limiting factor to throughput, as is also the drying of densely...

Economical evaluation of organic meadow farms in Poland Organic Eprints
Jankowska-Huflejt, Dr Halina; Prokopowicz, Dr Jerzy.
The study was based on data collected in 39 organic farms in 9 Polish regions. The mean share of grasslands was 47.3%, i.e. twice the country average (21%). These organic farms were classified according to the EU system of farm classification (MAFF, 1992). Among 5 general agricultural types (of 9 types defined in EU), the best economic results of the stud-ied farms were found in the general type 4 (special-ized in breeding grazing cattle) and the lowest in the general type 1 (specialized in field crops). The highest economic results among the farms of the basic types (9 of 17 EU-defined types) were reached in the type 43 (cattle in total) and the lowest result, in the type 14 (other field crops excluding cereals, oil and legume plants). Out of the...

Die Wahrnehmung von Leistungen direktabsetzender Betriebe des ökologischen Landbaus durch Verbraucher Organic Eprints
König, Ingo; Steinborn, Patricia; Deubele, Theresa; Raupach, Valeria; Reelfs, Torben; Zieger, Martin.
In a holistic approach customers were asked in qualitative interviews about their perception of organic farms which run their own shops. Besides the organic quality they like the competent service, the traditional look and details. They regard the farms shops as pleasant. Many customers visit the farm and animals. Other consumers living near the farm like a wide range of products contact to their neighbourhood and exchange information. The seasonal fluctuations in supply are accepted. Most customers, though different in age and motivation, are aware of ecological and health topics. Customers praise the good taste, the real freshness and good quality. In a second series of Interviews customers of organic shops were asked to define the farm shop related...

Price premium of organic salmon in Danish retail sale Organic Eprints
Ankamah-Yeboah, Isaac; Nielsen, Max; Nielsen, Rasmus.
The year 2016 will be pivotal for organic aquaculture producers in EU, because it represents the deadline for implementing the complete organic life cycle in aquaculture production. Depending on the sturdiness of farms already producing, such a shift in the industry may affect production costs of exclusively using organic fry for production. If the profitability of the primary organic aquaculture producers should be maintained, then farmers must be able to correspondingly receive higher prices, transmitted through the value chain from the retail market. This study identifies the price premium for organic salmon in Danish retail sale using consumer panel scanner data from households by applying a random effect hedonic price model that permits...

Hvad tjente økologerne i 2012? Organic Eprints
Tesdorpf, Marianne.

Organic Eprints
Haga, Hans; Lindblad, Lindblad.
