Applying a non-parametric bootstrap technique to assess the accuracy of biomass estimates of argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) northern stock (34º S-41º S) with the Daily Egg Production Method. 1993-2008 period OceanDocs
Pájaro, M.; Hansen, J.E.; Leonarduzzi, E..
Engraulis anchoita northern stock reproductive biomass (SSB) during the 1993-2008 period was estimated applying the Daily Egg Production Method (DEPM) and accuracy of estimates assessed using a bootstrap technique (SW Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). The basic data were collected in different research surveys carried out in late Spring, at the peak of the spawning season. The aim of this work was to build reliable confidence intervals around the estimates of the mean reproductive biomass applying a non-parametric bootstrap method. Resampling methods are becoming increasingly popular as statistical tools as they are robust and do not require the assumption of any particular distribution of the basic data. This is especially relevant when assessing the DEPM...

Fecundidad y frecuencia reproductiva de las poblaciones bonaerense y patagónica de anchoíta Argentina Engraulis anchoita. OceanDocs
Pájaro, M.; Macchi, G.J.; Sánchez, R.P..
Fecundity and spawning frequency were estimated in the northern(off Buenos Aires Province)and southern (patagonian)argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita populations in 1993, during the peak of the spawning season. Relative fecundity, expressed as eggs per ovary-free weight was 574±21 (CI 95. ) and 605±49 (CI 95. ) in the northern and southern populations. The difference was not statistically significant between stocks (P0.13). Relative fecundity was higher in anchovies larger than 130 mm. The mean batch fecundity for the northern and southern populations was 13675±856 (CI 95. ) and21677±2.753 (CI 95. ) respectively. Batch fecundity (F)expressed as alinear function of ovary-free weight (W)was: F=-1310+649 * W(northern), F=-5935+786 * W (southern). The daily...

Performance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii broodstock fed diets with different fatty acid composition OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effect of linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) on the reproductive performance and offspring quality of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii was evaluated in a 180-day trial. Three isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets containing different levels of fatty acids, high 18:2n-6 and n-3 HUFA concentrations, high 18:2n-6 and low n-3 HUFA, and low 18:2n-6 and n-3 HUFA, were fed ad libitum to three groups of six females. Fecundity was improved by the addition of higher amounts of 18:2n-6 (from 3 to 13 mg g-1 DW). As a consequence of higher fecundity, smaller eggs were obtained most likely because the number of oocytes competing for a limited amount of yolk was higher. The...

Reproductive performance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii females in captivity OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The breeding frequency, fecundity, egg hatchability, larval output and viability of pond-reared, mature Macrobrachium rosenbergii females were individually followed up during 180 d. Sexually mature prawns were maintained under controlled laboratory conditions (28.7 C and 12-h light/d) in a 190-L freshwater recirculation system and fed a formulated diet. Ovarian development, moulting and spawning events were checked daily. At least six consecutive moults were recorded for each of the 18 females. The duration of the intermoult period averaged 27.5 d and was not affected by ovarian development or spawning, but intermoult periods followed by spawning had significantly lower growth rates. From a total of 126 moulting events recorded, egg...

Non-seasonal reproduction in inseminating species of Mimagoniates (Characidae, Characiformes) from southern Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Lampert,Vinicius Renner; Azevedo,Marco Aurélio.
Abstract Some aspects of reproduction in two species of Mimagoniates, M. microlepis (Steindachner 1877) and M. rheocharis Menezes & Weitzman 1990 are herein described. Samples were taken monthly from January 1998 to February 1999 in two streams in the locality of Maquiné, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Results from the analysis of hundreds of specimens of M. microlepis and M. rheocharis in two investigated sites indicated mature specimens and peaks of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) along the year. There was a negative and significant correlation between M. microlepis male’s GSI and water temperature. Females of the latter species and both sexes of M. rheocharis, in turn, showed no correlation with any of the tested parameters (relative stomach weight, day...

Demographic parameters of cowpea aphids on advanced semi-erect cowpea lines PAB
Silva,Leandro Carvalho da; Nere,Daniel Rodrigues; Bleicher,Ervino; Barbosa,Antônio Vinícius Correa; Tavares,Eraldo José Madureira.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the resistance of advanced semi-erect cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) lines, by means of a screening assay for resistance and the elaboration of fertility-life tables of Aphis craccivora (Hemiptera: Aphididae). The experiments were carried out in a screenhouse. For the resistance trial, 15 advanced cowpea lines were used, as well as two standard genotypes for resistance and two for susceptibility, which were arranged in six blocks. After resistance was determined, two lines with the highest and lowest resistance were selected for the development of the fertility-life tables which were used to estimate demographic parameters. The MNCO4-762F-03 and MNCO4-762F-09 cowpea lines were classified as resistant, for...

Impact of small variations in temperature and humidity on the reproductive activity and survival of Aedes aegypti (Diptera, Culicidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Costa,Ethiene Arruda Pedrosa de Almeida; Santos,Eloína Maria de Mendonça; Correia,Juliana Cavalcanti; Albuquerque,Cleide Maria Ribeiro de.
In short space of time increase in temperature and rainfall can affect vector populations and, consequently, the diseases for them transmitted. The present study analyzed the effect of small temperature and humidity variations on the fecundity, fertility and survival of Aedes aegypti. These parameters were analyzed using individual females at temperatures ranging from 23 to 27 °C (mean 25 °C); 28 to 32 °C (mean 30 °C) and 33 to 37 °C (mean 35 ºC) associated to 60±8% and 80±6% relative humidity. Females responded to an increase in temperature by reducing egg production, oviposition time and changing oviposition patterns. At 25 ºC and 80% relative humidity, females survived two-fold more and produced 40% more eggs when compared to those kept at 35 ºC and 80%...

Type of prey influences biology and consumption rate of Orius insidiosus (Say) (Hemiptera, Anthocoridae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Mendes,Simone M.; Bueno,Vanda H. P.; Argolo,Valdirene M.; Silveira,Luis Cláudio P..
Generalist predators are capable of consuming different types of prey, and as each prey may have distinct nutritional values, each may have a distinct impact on the biology of the predator. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine how the consumption of different prey influences certain biological characteristics and the predatory capacity of Orius insidiosus (Say). The investigation was performed in climatic chamber at 25 ±1 ºC, RH 70 ± 10% and fotophase 12. Eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller), adults of Caliothrips phaseoli (Hood) and nymphs of Aphis gossypii Glover were used as prey and were provided daily ad libitum for all the mobile stages of the predator. The results showed that biological parameters of O. insidiosus are affected...

Longevity and fecundity of Dichroplus maculipennis (Orthoptera, Acrididae) at non-outbreaking and outbreaking situations Rev. Bras. entomol.
Mariottini,Yanina; Wysiecki,María Laura De; Lange,Carlos Ernesto.
Dichroplus maculipennis is one of the most characteristic and damaging grasshopper species of Argentina, mainly in areas of the Pampas and Patagonia regions. We estimated and compared the longevity and fecundity of adult female D. maculipennis under controlled conditions (30ºC, 14L:10D, 40% RH) from individuals collected as last instar nymphs (VI) in the field and with a known recent history of low and high density conditions. Densities of D. maculipennis at the collecting sites were 0.95 individuals per m² in 2006 and 46 ind/m² in 2009, representing non-outbreaking and outbreaking situations, respectively. Adult female longevity in 2006 (67.96 ± 3.2 days) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in 2009 (37.44 ± 1.98 days). The number of egg-pods per...

Mariottini,Y.; De Wysiecki,M.L.; Alberti,A.; Lange,C.E..
Abstract Borellia bruneri, a common grasshopper in much of the grasslands of Argentina and Uruguay, is considered, according to the categories widely accepted for defining the pest status of grasshopper species, a “Frequent plague of importance”. In order to determine fundamental aspects of its biology and reproduction, three cohorts of B. bruneri were monitored under controlled conditions (30º C, 14L: 10D, 40% RH). The total duration of nymphal development was 50.6 days, both males and females having five nymphal instars. There was a significant difference in the duration of the different stages within each cohort. In the three cohorts, the first instar duration (12.87 days) was longer than the rest, approximately 5.6 days more than the second that was...

Population structure and reproductive biology of Uca rapax (Decapoda: Ocypodidae) in a tropical coastal lagoon, southeast Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Costa,Tarso; Soares-Gomes,Abilio.
A population of the fiddler crab Uca rapax (Smith, 1870) found in Itaipu Lagoon, southeast Brazil, was sampled monthly from July 2006 to June 2007 in order to study population and reproductive features. The sex ratio of the population was statistically different from the expected (1:1) in almost every month, with a predominance of males. The reproductive cycle and the recruitment of juveniles were continuous, with two peaks. The fecundity ranged from 1.110 to 13.189 eggs (4.984 ± 2.493.8), not differing statistically among seasons. In contrast, the relative fecundity (F') and the reproductive intensity index (RII) were highest in the summer. Female size at the onset of sexual maturity was estimated as 6.1 mm and egg diameter ranged from 0.20 to 0.28 mm....

Offspring production in three freshwater crab species (Brachyura: Pseudothelphusidae) from the Amazon region and Central America Rev. Bras. Zool.
Wehrtmann,Ingo S.; Magalhães,Célio; Hernáez,Patricio; Mantelatto,Fernando L..
Freshwater crabs are an important component of the fauna of limnic environments, and out of the two true freshwater crab families present in the Neotropics, Pseudothelphusidae is the most diverse. Considering the lack of information regarding reproductive features of neotropical freshwater crabs, we studied, for the first time, the fecundity and the presence of juveniles carried by females of two pseudothelphusids from the Amazon region - Kingsleya latifrons (Randall, 1840) and Kingsleya ytupora Magalhães, 1986 - and one from Central America - Potamocarcinus magnus (Rathbun, 1896). The two Kingsleya species produced relatively few (56-114) and large eggs (1.9-3.7 mm), typical for species with an abbreviated or direct development. Recently produced eggs...
