Validation of daily increment deposition in otoliths of the pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) larvae OceanDocs
Brown, D.R.; Fuentes, C.M..
The daily basis of increment deposition in sagitta otoliths of laboratory and mesocosm reared (Odontesthes bonariensis) larvae was validated (Buenos Aires prov., Argentina). The timing of changes in rearing environment was recorded in otoliths by tetracycline marking. Results showed that increment deposition started at hatching and proceeded on a daily basis at least during the first two months of life. Thus, age and hatching date of O. bonariensis larvae can be easily determined by otolith reading within this period. This information will be useful to assess growth rate and mortality in extensive culture as well as in stock enhancement programs with this species.

Variaciones estacionales en el crecimiento de larvas de anchoita (Engraulis anchoita). OceanDocs
Leonarduzzi, E..
Age and growth rates of southern anchovy larvae (Engraulis anchoita)were estimated by analysis of daily increments in sagittal otoliths under light microscopy. Samples were collected during 2002 with a bongo net, in the Buenos Aires province, Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic). Otoliths corresponding to 251 larvae (size range 3.5 u 12.2 mm SL)were analyzed. Growth rate estimated as slopes by linear regression of length-age data were 0.50, 0.40, and 0.42 mm/day, and these values corresponded to larvae collected in spring, summer and autumn. Larval growth were significantly distinct between the year seasons (ANCOVA, p<0.01). Recent larval growth expressed as mean growth rates during the last 4 days of the larvae was not correlated with surface temperature. The...

Preliminary results on the nutritional evaluation of omega-3-HUFA-enriched <i>Artemia</i> nauplii for larvae of the sea bass, <i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i> OMA
Van Ballaer, E.; Amat, F.; Hontoria, F.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Freshly hatched San Pablo Bay and Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-poor) and enriched meta-nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-enriched)were compared to reference <i>Artemia</i> nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-rich) as a food source for the larvae of the sea bass, <i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>. Significant differences in survival and biomass production between the treatments could be attributed to the omega-3-HUFA content of the food. A delayed mortality in fish larvae fed the Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> is suspected to be caused by a high level of alpha-BHC in this <i>Artemia</i> source. Growth was not significantly different between the treatments, most probably due to the large variation in growth...

Development of a lipid-enrichment technique for <i>Artemia</i> juveniles produced in an intensive system for use in marine larviculture OMA
Dhont, J.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Although there exists an obvious inclination to replace live larval food by formulated feeds, <i>Artemia nauplii</i> are still essential in the larviculture of marine fish species. So far, on-grown <i>Artemia</i> are rarely used in larviculture although they offer several advantages over <i>Artemia nauplii</i>: e.g. they contain a higher individual protein and energy content thus improving the fish larvae's energy budget; an equal amount of live food is reached with far less individuals thus a considerable saving of <i>Artemia</i> cysts; their composition of (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) may easily be improved by applying enrichment techniques. This study deals with the development of...

Effect of dietary essential fatty acids on egg quality and larviculture success of the greasy grouper (<i>Epinephelus tauvina</i> F.): preliminary results OMA
Dhert, P.; Lim, L.C.; Lavens, P.; Chao, T.M.; Chou, R.; Sorgeloos, P..
In spite of its aquaculture potential, the larval rearing of greasy grouper (<i>Epinephelus tauvina</i>) remains problematic and is not yet commercially feasible. The low and unpredictable larval survival is due to difficulties encountered in spawning the broodstock, the small size of the larvae at first feeding, and the high sensitivity of the larvae until day 45. The nutritional requirements for the broodstock as well as for the young larvae are still enigmatical. In this presentation the impact of supplementing the highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the broodstock and larval diets is illustrated.

Rearing techniques for difficult marine fish larvae OMA
Dhert, Ph.; Divanach, P.; Kentouri, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
In finfish mariculture, seed production and larval rearing still form the bottleneck for all ongrowing operations and are considered as the main limiting factor for industrial development. Through trial and error more than through biological understanding two opposite hatchery techniques have been developed which surprisingly control a multiparametric combination of different factors but aspire to the same objective of conformity with wild standards and the cost-effective production of larvae. In intensive aquaculture, the rearing technique is characterised by high initial larval densities in small tanks under strict hydraulic, thermic, and nutritional conditions. The light conditions are artificial. The temperature and quality of water are controlled. The...

Three simple culture devices for aquatic invertebrates and fish larvae with continuous recirculation of the medium OMA
Sorgeloos, P.; Persoone, G..
The 3 culturing devices described are based on the principle of the classic air-water lift, which facilitates continuous recirculation and aeration of the cultivation medium. The first device is a "circulation cylinder", convenient for hatching eggs of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia salina</i> and for culturing algae and protozoans. In the second device, an internal basket (i.e., a glass cylinder with plankton-gauze bottom) prevents the animals being carried along in the air-water lift. The third device, analogous to the second, is provided with a lateral waste-drain and a water collector with siphon, which empties regularly into the main culture vessel. The second and third devices proved to be excellent for the cultivation of a variety of...

Search for beneficial bacterial strains for turbot (<i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> L.) larviculture OMA
Huys, L.; Dhert, P.; Robles, R.; Ollevier, F.P.; Sorgeloos, P.; Swings, J..
The aerobic bacterial flora in the gut of turbot larvae and their influence on larval survival was examined. Two turbot experiments were run with six replicates each time. Large variation, from 0% up to 44%, was observed in the survival percentage of turbot larvae. There was no correlation between the number of bacteria present in the gut of turbot larvae and the larval survival rate. During both experiments, all replicates followed nearly the same rate of bacterial development in the gut of turbot larvae going from circa 102 CFU larva-1 just before first feeding at day 3 post hatch to 105 CFU larva-1 at day 9 post hatch. In total, 127 bacterial isolates from 12...

An oral challenge for turbot larvae with <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i> OMA
Chair, M.; Dehasque, M.; Van Poucke, S.; Nelis, H.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
There is a need for a standard in vitro procedure to infect larval fish with bacteria. Such a procedure could be used as a tool to evaluate fish quality, verify fish sensitivity to a certain bacterial strain or evaluate the pathogenicity of a bacterium towards a given fish species. The availability of a challenge test is a prerequisite in studies dealing with the effect of different medicinal treatments on diseased fish. An oral challenge test would offer the possibility to investigate the routes of infection via the digestive tract, i.e. after feeding contaminated feeds. The present study aims to verify this hypothesis and proposes a standard challenge procedure for turbot (<i>Scophthalmus maximus</i>) larvae with a pathogenic <i>Vibrio...

A new artificial diet for the early weaning of seabass (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) larvae OMA
Devresse, B.; Candreva, P.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The weaning of marine fish larvae is a critical step in larval rearing. The successful transition from live food to an artificial feed depends among others on the quality of the dry feed used (e.g. freshness of ingredients, digestibility, quality of the formulation) and the larvae themselves (e.g. age, behaviour towards artificial diets, development of the digestive tract, efficiency of certain metabolic pathways). The present study shows the results obtained with a new artificial diet formulated for the weaning phase of marine fish larvae (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) in commercial hatcheries.

The effect of supplemental ascorbic acid in enriched live food for <i>Clarias gariepinus</i> larvae at startfeeding OMA
Merchie, G.; Lavens, P.; Verreth, J.; Ollevier, F.P.; Nelis, H.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Storch, V.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effect of three dietary ascorbic acid (AA) concentrations, each applied via two feed types, on production characteristics and physiological condition of African catfish (<i>Clarius gariepinus</i>) larvae has been assessed in two 10-day culture trials. Three treatments received only <i>Artemia</i> nauplii enriched with an experimental emulsion containing 0, 10 or 20% ascorbyl palmitate (AP) and yielding 530, 1200 and 1600 µg AA g-1 DW <i>Artemia</i> , respectively; the other three treatments were fed the same <i>Artemia</i> diets which were partially substituted by an artificial diet containing no vitamin C (ratio 20:80). No differences in survival could be observed: however, from...

Cofeeding of phospholipids to turbot <i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> L. larvae as a tool to reduce live food consumption OMA
Dhert, P.; González Félix, M.; Van Ryckeghem, K.; Geurden, I.; Thysen, F.; Lebegue, E.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The possible benefits of feeding a formulated diet, together with <i>Artemia</i> , to first-feeding turbot larvae were investigated. Five dietary regimes were used: control ( <i>Artemia</i> only), cofeeding with a diet rich in phospholipid (PL) from bovine brain, cofeeding with a diet rich in free fatty acids (FFA) from the same source, cofeeding with a commercial diet (Lansy A2), and a formulated feed only (PL-rich diet). All treatments with artificial diets and the control treatment that received <i>Artemia</i> exclusively gave a similar survival rate of the fish at day 29. Cofeeding with artificial diets resulted in a lower growth rate than the control treatment. Cofeeding the larvae with PL-rich or FFA-rich diets did...

Live-food mediated drug delivery as a tool for disease treatment in larviculture: 2. A case study with European seabass OMA
Chair, M.; Romdhane, M.S.; Dehasque, M.; Nelis, H.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of oral delivery of the antibiotics Trimethoprim (TMP) and Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) to marine fish larvae through incorporation of these antibiotics into the live food organism <i>Artemia</i>. SMX and TMP were selected for their wide range action against gram negative pathogenic bacteria and because of their limited solubility in seawater. Ormetoprim-Sulfadimethoxine (brand name Romet-30) is a new combination of a similar antimicrobial drug used in aquaculture. Diseased penaeid larvae fed Romet-30 through the food chain exhibited greater survival than the untreated ones. In an earlier study Verpraet have described a technique for bioencapsulating high doses of more than 500 mu g TMP +...

Review on the dietary effects of phospholipids in fish and crustacean larviculture OMA
Coutteau, P.; Geurden, I.; Camara, M.R.; Bergot, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A beneficial effect of dietary phospholipid (PL) supplementation in purified diets in terms of survival, growth, resistance to stress tests, and occurrence of deformities has been demonstrated in larval and juvenile stages of various species of fish and crustaceans. The exact determination of PL requirements in larvae is complicated due to the difficulty to bio-encapsulate PL in live prey. Furthermore, the great variety in purity and composition of the PL sources, and the experimental conditions (such as diet formulation and extent of co/prefeeding with live food) makes it difficult to compare requirements determined with artificial diets. Larval stages are extremely sensitive to a dietary PL deficiency and require higher levels of dietary PL than...

Hybrids between Pseudoplatystoma corruscans and P. reticulatum (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) previously reported in the Upper Paraná River are likely escapes from aquaculture farms: evidence from microsatellite markers Rev. Bras. Zool.
Baggio,Rafael A.; Moretti,Caroline B.; Bialetzki,Andréa; Boeger,Walter A..
ABSTRACT The production of hybrids of the 'pintado', Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) and 'cachara', Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889) in captivity has generated many concerns about the possibility of introduction of farmed hybrids into natural environments. In the last decade, hybrids between these species, known as 'pintachara' or 'cachapinta', were reported from different regions of the Upper Paraná River basin. Prospection of these hybrids is important in order to orient conservation programs for the species involved. Knowledge of the presence of these hybrids will direct conservation strategies towards prevention and/or mitigation of the effects of cross breeding in natural populations of P....
