Biology, Flowering and Fruiting of the Cactus Opuntia spp.: A Review and Some Observations on Three Varieties in Morocco BABT
Arba,Mohamed; Falisse,André; Choukr-Allah,Redouane; Sindic,Marianne.
ABSTRACT The cactus is a succulent plant resistant to droughts. According to the recently reviewed classification, cacti belong to the family of Opuntiaceae Desv. (synon. Cactaceae Juss.) with Opuntia Mill. as the typical genus. This genus is economically the most important in the family, as it includes a group of cactus pear plants which play an important role in the agricultural systems of arid and semi-arid regions. Flowering of the cactus pear fruit is an important determinant of the fruit harvesting period. The goal of this paper is to present the physiology of the cactus pear and to explain in detail the biology of its flowering and fruiting processes. This study is also enriched by our observations on the flowering and fruiting of three varieties of...

Physico-chemical and harvest time alterations in pineapple fruits ‘Smooth Cayenne’ caused by paclobutrazol BABT
Antunes,Andréa Maria; Ono,Elizabeth Orika; Sampaio,Aloísio Costa; Rodrigues,João Domingos.
The aim of this work was to assess the effect of an inhibitor acting in the floral differentiation on the physico-chemical characteristics of pineapple fruits and on the effect in the harvest time. Paclobutrazol was used at concentrations of 100, 150, and 200 mg L-1, applied 2, 3 or 4 times in ‘Smooth Cayenne’ pineapple plants. The treatment did not influence the chemical characteristics of the fruits, and even having some physical alterations, they were within the quality standard for the commercialization. The harvest time was amplified in all the treatments comparing to the control. However, 150 mg L-1 applied twice promoted the best result when analyzing together the harvest time and the fruit fresh matter.

EgLFY, the Eucalyptus grandis homolog of the Arabidopsis gene LEAFY is expressed in reproductive and vegetative tissues Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Dornelas,Marcelo Carnier; Amaral,Weber A. Neves do; Rodriguez,Adriana Pinheiro Martinelli.
The EgLFY gene cloned from Eucalyptus grandis has sequence homology to the floral meristem identity gene LEAFY (LFY) from Arabidopsis and FLORICAULA (FLO) from Antirrhinum. EgLFY is preferentially expressed in the developing eucalypt floral organs in a pattern similar to that described previously for the Arabidopsis LFY. In situ hybridization experiments have shown that EgLFY is strongly expressed in the early floral meristem and then successively in the primordia of sepals, petals, stamens and carpels. It is also expressed in the leaf primordia of adult trees. The expression of the EgLFY coding region under control of the Arabidopsis LFY promoter could complement strong lfy mutations in transgenic Arabidopsis plants. These data suggest that EgLFY plays a...

Ecophysiology of the cacao tree Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Almeida,Alex-Alan F. de; Valle,Raúl R..
Cacao, one of the world's most important perennial crops, is almost exclusively explored for chocolate manufacturing. Most cacao varieties belong to three groups: Criollo, Forastero and Trinitario that vary according to morphology, genetic and geographical origins. It is cropped under the shade of forest trees or as a monocrop without shade. Seedlings initially show an orthotropic growth with leaf emission relatively independent of climate. The maturity phase begins with the emission of plagiotropic branches that form the tree crown. At this stage environmental factors exert a large influence on plant development. Growth and development of cacao are highly dependent on temperature, which mainly affects vegetative growth, flowering and fruit development....

Physiology of citrus fruiting Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Iglesias,Domingo J.; Cercós,Manuel; Colmenero-Flores,José M.; Naranjo,Miguel A.; Ríos,Gabino; Carrera,Esther; Ruiz-Rivero,Omar; Lliso,Ignacio; Morillon,Raphael; Tadeo,Francisco R.; Talon,Manuel.
Citrus is the main fruit tree crop in the world and therefore has a tremendous economical, social and cultural impact in our society. In recent years, our knowledge on plant reproductive biology has increased considerably mostly because of the work developed in model plants. However, the information generated in these species cannot always be applied to citrus, predominantly because citrus is a perennial tree crop that exhibits a very peculiar and unusual reproductive biology. Regulation of fruit growth and development in citrus is an intricate phenomenon depending upon many internal and external factors that may operate both sequentially and simultaneously. The elements and mechanisms whereby endogenous and environmental stimuli affect fruit growth are...

Effect of crop load on the phenological, vegetative and reproductive behavior of the ‘Frantoio’ olive tree (Olea europaea L.) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Beyá-Marshall,Víctor; Fichet,Thomas.
The aim of this study was to characterize the phenological, vegetative and reproductive behavior variables of ‘Frantoio’ olive trees in an "off’ year (with a low crop load) and an "on" year (with a high crop load). To do this, during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 seasons, "off" and "on", respectively, phenological variables, plant growth (shoots and roots) and reproductive growth (type of flower, fruit set and growth), were monitored biweekly. In addition, the yield per tree was assessed, and the crop load was estimated. The main results showed that crop load strongly influenced these variables. The distribution and intensity of vegetative growth, both in the roots and aboveground, decreased more and had lower intensity in the high fruiting season, with a...

Decreased time from seed to flowering corm size in Zephyra elegansvia in vitro cultivation Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Vidal,Alexis K; Han,Dong-Sheng; Nakano,Masaru; Niimi,Yoshiji.
Experiments were performed to establish a method to reduce the time from seed to flowering in Zephyra elegans. Seedlings took at least four years to produce a flowering corm. Although germination was highest in a water-agar medium, plant necrosis occurred when plants were later transferred; therefore, MS (Murashige and Skoog) medium was selected as the medium for germination. An increase in the light intensity to 9500 lux and in the pH to 6.7, significantly increased the germination rate. Eight weeks after seed germination, seedlings were transferred to MS media with sucrose concentrations of 45, 60, 75, 90 or 105 g L-1 and a pH 5.7 or 6.7, with the aim of achieving the greatest corm weight gain. After 16 weeks, the best weight gain was obtained in the MS...

A temperature response function for development of the chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum x morifolium Ramat.) Ciência Rural
Streck,Nereu Augusto.
Developmental models can help growers to decide management practices, and to predict flowering and harvest time. Currently, a double exponential function is proposed as a generalized temperature response function for chrysanthemum. This function is not the most appropriate because its parameters lack biological meaning. The objective of this study was to develop a nonlinear temperature response function of chrysanthemum development that has parameters with biological meaning. The proposed function is a beta function with three parameters, the cardinal temperatures (minimum, optimum, and maximum temperatures for development), which were defined as 0, 22, and 35ºC. Published data of temperature response of development of three cultivars, which are...

Growth and yield of anthurium in response to gibberellic acid Ciência Rural
Lima,Juliana Domingues; Ansante,Nathalia Felipe; Nomura,Edson Shigueaki; Fuzitani,Eduardo Jun; Silva,Silvia Helena Modenese-Gorla da.
Gibberellic acid (GA3) induces flowering of plants of various genera of the Araceae family. Therefore, it was evaluated the effect of GA3 on the growth and yield of Anthurium andraeanum cv. 'Apalai'. For this purpose, micropropagated seedlings were planted in nursery beds under 70% shade. The experimental design was completely randomized in subdivided plots with eight replications. The growth regulation effect was assessed in each plot and the time to flowering after the start of the treatments was assessed in each subplot. The GA3 concentrations were 0, 150, 300, 450 and 600mg L-1, applied every 60 days by spraying on the leaves. The applications and evaluations started after the production of marketable floral stems. Every month the number of leaves was...

Floral induction management in 'Palmer' mango using uniconazole Ciência Rural
Lima,Guilherme Machado de Sousa; Pereira,Marlon Cristian Toledo; Oliveira,Moacir Brito; Nietsche,Silvia; Mizobutsi,Gisele Polete; Públio Filho,Wilson Maciel; Mendes,Débora Souza.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different doses of uniconazole (UCZ) on 'Palmer' mango vegetative and reproductive response and on fruit physical, chemical, and productive characteristics during the off-season in northern Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experiment followed a randomized block design. UCZ was tested at the following doses applied to leaves and expressed in g of UCZ active ingredient (a.i.) per tree: 0.0, 1.0, and 1.0+1.0 (2.0) after 30 days; 1.0+1.0+1.0 (3.0) subdivided into 30-day intervals; and 1.0+1.0+2.0 (4.0) subdivided into 30-day intervals. All of the UCZ treatments reduced branch elongation in the 'Palmer' mango trees, leading to a mean reduction of 81.6% compared to the control. However, the UCZ...

Phenology and biometry of physic nut in the brazilian savannah Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Gurgel,Fábio de Lima; Laviola,Bruno Galvêas; Silva,Daniel Medeiros da; Kobayashi,Adilson Kenji; Rosado,Tatiana Barbosa.
Phenological studies on three morphologically distinct accessions of physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) were conducted in the Brazilian Savannah biome. Plant growth rate, flowering, fruit formation and development were measured in order to establish appropriate management practices for increasing productivity. The accessions CNPAE-102 (toxic and susceptible to powdery mildew), CNPAE-169 (non-toxic and susceptible to powdery mildew) and CNPAE-259 (toxic and resistant to powdery mildew) were studied. Accessions with undetectable levels of phorbol ester in the grains were considered as non-toxic. The agronomic variables (plant height, number of inflorescences, number of green and ripe fruits per plant) from each accession were measured biweekly during one year...
