Crop loading studies on ‘Caricia’ and ‘Eva’ apples grown in a mild winter area Scientia Agricola
Castro,Damián César; Álvarez,Norma; Gabriel,Paola; Micheloud,Norma; Buyatti,Marcela; Gariglio,Norberto.
The crop load level of an apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) tree impacts fruit yield and quality parameters, tree vigor and biennial bearing. The optimal crop load is that which allows for consistent annual cropping and fruit quality acceptable to the market. We evaluated the effect of crop load on yield and fruit quality of two low-chill apples cv. ‘Caricia’ and ‘Eva’, growing in a mild winter area. During 2010 and 2011 crop load was manually adjusted from 2 or 3 to 17 fruits cm−2 of trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA). Fruit yield was positively related to crop load in both cultivars but mean fruit weight diminished as the crop load increased. For both cultivars, the production of non-commercial and small-sized fruit increased, whereas production of...

Physiological responses and production of 'Syrah' vines as a function of training systems Scientia Agricola
Favero,Ana Carolina; Amorim,Daniel Angelucci de; Mota,Renata Vieira da; Souza,Claudia Rita de; Regina,Murillo de Albuquerque.
Plant architecture and its interaction with agricultural practices and environmental constraints is determinant for grapevine canopy structure, which is related to carbon assimilation, bud fertility and fruit quality. In this context, this study evaluated the performance of field-grown 'Syrah' grapevines conducted by two management systems: Vertical Shoot Position (VSP) or a modified Geneva Double Curtain (GDC), in Pirapora, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, during the winters of 2007 and 2008. The evaluations of leaf area, water relations and net CO2 assimilation were made at the end of the ripening period. Yield per vine and per hectare were estimated and mean berry weight and diameter, total soluble solids, pH and titratable acidity were evaluated during...

Mineral and organomineral fertirrigation in relation to quality of greenhouse cultivated melon Scientia Agricola
Fernandes,André Luís Teixeira; Rodrigues,Guilherme Pádua; Testezlaf,Roberto.
Fertirrigation of melon still presents problems in relation to the type of the fertilizer used, mainly the biofertilizers. This experiment, installed in Uberaba, MG, Brazil, in a plastic module greenhouse of 768 m², tested treatments consisting of the conventional mineral fertirrigation and the organic fertirrigation, using two frequencies: daily and weekly. The best yields were obtained with daily fertilizer application, with superiority in relation to biofertilizers, with yield of 45.5 t ha-1 of fruit. This value was higher as compared to chemical products, that lead to a yield of 42.4 t ha-1. The weekly fertigation had lower productivities, and in this case, the biofertilizers also overcame the mineral, on the average 2.0 t ha-1. The best melon soluble...

Trifoliata hybrids rootstocks for 'Lane Late' navel orange in Spain Scientia Agricola
Legua,Pilar; Bellver,Ricardo; Forner,Juan Bautista; Forner-Giner,Maria Angeles.
Carrizo citrange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb. × Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.] and Cleopatra mandarin (C. reshni Hort. ex Tan.) are the most important rootstocks used in Spain, but they are problematic and it is necessary to search for new rootstocks with better all-round performance. The performance of 'Lane Late' navel orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb] on ten rootstocks was determined in the South of the province of Alicante (Spain). They are Carrizo citrange, Cleopatra mandarin and eight new hybrids obtained at the Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias in Valencia (Spain): 020324 [Troyer citrange (C. sinensis × P. trifoliata) × Cleopatra mandarin], Forner-Alcaide 418 (F&A 418) [Troyer citrange × common mandarin (C. deliciosa Ten.)],...

Phenological and yield performance of black and redberry cultivars in western Paraná State - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v34i4.15528 Agronomy
Pio, Rafael; Universidade Federal de Lavras; Campagnolo, Marcelo Angelo; Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná.
Because grain cultivation in Paraná is becoming unsustainable on small farms, growing fruit should be explored on these production units. Thus, the objective of the present work was to quantify the phenology and production of cultivars of black and redberry plants in the western region of Paraná in the town of Marechal Cândido Rondon, Paraná State, Brazil. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with four blocks and eleven treatments (blackberry cultivars Arapaho, Xavante, Ébano, Comanche, Caingangue, Choctaw, Tupy, Guarani, Brazos and Cherokee and the redberry plants). In each plot, composed of five plants, the phenological and production data for the 2009/10 and 2010/11 production cycles were collected, and the physicochemical quantification of...
