Estructura de las comunidades de la meiofauna de la Bahía de Nipe, Cuba OceanDocs
Cuervo, Z.; Armenteros, M.; Capetillo, N.; Arencibia, G.; Pérez, I.; González, G..
The structure of meiofaunal communities was surveyed in 17 stations in Nipe Bay, Cuba in July, 2001. Levels of Nickel (all stations) are higher than in several bays in Cuba, probably due to natural causes. The levels of Copper, Zinc, Fe and Manganese indicate a relative low pollution, likely related to the presence of urban settlements. There is decrease in the total density and number of taxa of meiofauna in the stations with higher levels of metals; the copepods appear to be particularly sensitivity to metal pollution. The stations located at the mouth of the bay have the lowest levels of contamination and the highest total density of organisms and taxa richness, probably due to a more intense turnover of the waters in this area and consequent lower...

XRF analysis of sediments from Nuevitas Bay (Cuba): assessment of current heavy metal contamination OceanDocs
Díaz Rizo, O.; Rudnikas, A. G.; Lavin Pérez, R. D.; Arencibia Carballo, G.; D´Alessandro Rodríguez, K..
Concentrations of chromium, nickel, copper, zinc and lead in surface sediments from six sta- tions located in Nuevitas Bay (Cuba) were estimated by X-ray fuorescence analysis. The Cr content in sediments shows a strong variation across the studied stations (89-513 mg.kg-1 ), in contrast with the other elements studied. The application of modifed degree of contamina- tion (mCd) classifes as moderate the contamination of Nuevitas Bay. The comparison with Se- diment Quality Guidelines and toxicity mean quotients shows that 100 % of the Sediments are associated with the occasional presence of possible adverse effects to human health.

Heavy metals distribution of soils around mining sites of cadmium-rich marine sedimentary phosphorites of Kpogamé and Hahotoé (Southern Togo) OceanDocs
Gnandi, K.; Tobschall, H.J..
Metal concentrations of 37 soil samples taken from mining areas (abandoned mine pits and transport routes) in Kpogamé and Hahotoé (southern Togo) range from 0.2-43 ppm for Cd, 15-115 ppm for Pb, 182-1,029 ppm for Cr, 18-356 ppm for Cu, 15-342 pm for Ni, 90-513 ppm for V, 35-536 ppm for Zn, 80-469 ppm for Zr and 266-3,161 ppm for Sr. The tropical alteration of the ore waste plays an important role in the distribution of trace elements in the studied soils. Because the alteration affects the element mobility, generally old abandoned mining areas, which , together with soils near the transport routes, show a higher degree of contamination. Under low pH and oxidising conditions in studied soils Cd, Ni and Zn are generally easily mobilised and are thus...

Distribution of vanadium in bottom sediments from the marine coastal area of the Egyptian seas OceanDocs
El-Moselhy, K.M..
The present study aims to measure the concentration of vanadium in 73 sediment samples collected along the coastal area of the Egyptian seas (Mediterranean and Red Seas). The results indicated that the mean value of vanadium in Red Sea sediments (52.61 µg/g) was higher than the mean value of the Mediterranean (40.58 µg/g) and the variation between the two means was insignificant (p = 0.241). This result could be attributed to the high petroleum activities of the Red Sea. Along the Mediterranean coast, the sector in front of Port Said area exhibited the highest mean value of vanadium (103.9 µg/g) than other sectors, which suffers from many sources of pollution. While the highest mean value along the Red Sea coast (73.20 µg/g) was found at the sector of Red...

Etude quantitative et qualitative des métallothioneines chez la daurade "Sparus aurata" exposée aux métaux lourds OceanDocs
Ameur, S.; Ghedira, J.; Guerbej, H.; Jebali, J.; Bouraoui, J.; Boussetta, H..

Elemental concentrations and heavy metal pollution in sediments and suspended matter from the Belgian North Sea and the Scheldt estuary OMA
Van Alsenoy, V.; Bernard, P.; Van Grieken, R..
The elemental composition of sediment and suspended matter samples from the Belgian coastal and offshore regions of the Southern Bight of the North Sea and from the Scheldt estuary has been determined using X-ray fluorescence and atomic absorption spectrometry.Special attention was given to the heavy metals of the black and grey lists. The bulk sediment and the clay/silt fraction were analyzed. The average heavy metal contents in the fraction <63 µm were comparable to the levels in the suspended matter. Different normalization techniques led to the identification of two different populations of sediments. Most of the sediments were enriched in Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb and Zn but no enrichment was found for Cu and Ni. Comparing these data with older data indicates...

Determination of methanesulfonic acid and non-sea-salt sulfate in single marine aerosol particles OMA
Kolaitis, L.N.; Bruynseels, F.; Van Grieken, R.; Andreae, M.O..
In open ocean waters the predominant volatile sulfur compound is dimethyl sulfide (DMS), representing almost 90% of the marine sulfur emissions. Methanesulfonic acid (MSA), one of the oxidation products of DMS, is consequently an important constituent of marine aerosols. Laser microprobe mass analysis (LAMMA) has been used for single-particle analysis of particles collected in the marine boundary layer. MSA, like the non-sea-salt sulfate, is mainly associated with the smallest aerosol particles, whose LAMMA spectra match the reference fingerprint spectra of MSA salts, sodium methanesulfonate and ammonium methanesulfonate. The presence of nitrate and heavy metal ions in the LAMMA spectra can reveal, to a certain extent, the degree of air pollution at the...

Organic acids in the rhizosphere and phytoavailability of sewage sludge-borne trace elements PAB
Pires,Adriana Marlene Moreno; Marchi,Giuliano; Mattiazzo,Maria Emília; Guilherme,Luiz Roberto Guimarães.
The aim of this work was to quantify low molecular weight organic acids in the rhizosphere of plants grown in a sewage sludge-treated media, and to assess the correlation between the release of the acids and the concentrations of trace-elements in the shoots of the plants. The species utilized in the experiment were cultivated in sand and sewage sludge-treated sand. The acetic, citric, lactic, and oxalic acids, were identified and quantified by high performance liquid chromatography in samples collected from a hydroponics system. Averages obtained from each treatment, concentration of trace elements in shoots and concentration of organic acids in the rhizosphere, were compared by Tukey test, at 5% of probability. Linear correlation analysis was applied to...

Biodiversity of Collembola in urban soils and their use as bioindicators for pollution PAB
Fiera,Cristina.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of pollutants on the abundance and diversity of Collembola in urban soils. The research was carried out in three parks (Cişmigiu, Izvor and Unirea) in downtown Bucharest, where the intense car traffic accounts for 70% of the local air pollution. One site in particular (Cişmigiu park) was highly contaminated with Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu at about ten times the background levels of Pb. Collembola were sampled in 2006 (July, September, November) using the transect method: 2,475 individuals from 34 species of Collembola were collected from 210 samples of soil and litter. Numerical densities differed significantly between the studied sites. The influence of air pollutants on the springtail fauna was visible at the...

Effects of nitrogen fertilization on heavy metal content of corn grains Phyton
Rui,Yu-kui; Zhang,Fu-suo; Shen,Jian-bo.
Nitrogen fertilization has played a significant role in increasing crop yield, and solving problems of hunger and malnutrition worldwide. However, excessive nitrogen inputs do not significantly increase crop yields but may lead to many serious environmental problems. The effects of nitrogen fertilization rate were studied on heavy metal content of corn grains. Our results show that nitrogen fertilization management is beneficial for reducing production costs, protecting the environment, and improving the quality of farm products.

The effects of tin (Sn) additions on the growth of spinach plants Phyton
Müller,FL; Cyster,LF; Raitt,LM; Aalbers,J.
An increase in bioavailable tin in the environment could result in bioaccumulation thereof in agricultural crops, and therefore, have adverse health consequences on humans that eat these crops. The aims of the current study were thus to assess the uptake of Sn by spinach plants, and the subsequent efects this will have on the uptake of Na, Zn, K, Ca, and Mg as well as the growth of spinach plants. Spinach plants were grown in sand culture and received tin at concentrations of 0.02, 0.2, 2 and 20 mg/L along with a nutrient solution. The uptake of tin at detectible concentrations only occurred at the highest concentrations (2 and 20 mg/L), and it was mostly retained in the roots of the plants. Tin additions also resulted in no visual toxicity symptoms, and...

Heavy metal accumulation in Pelargonium hortorum: Effects on growth and development Phyton
Orroño,DI; Lavado,RS.
Ornamental plants have been proposed for growing in heavy metal (HM) contaminated soils, and also for phytoremediation. We evaluated (1) biomass production and (2) HM accumulation in Pelargonium hortorum. Plants were grown for 16 weeks on HM (cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc) enriched soils. Treatments were i) control, non-enriched soil, ii) medium concentration treatment, and iii) high concentration treatment. Four destructive harvests were carried out, and roots, stems, leaves, and flowers were analyzed each time. Concentrations of HM were determined using ICP. Significant reductions in biomass production were observed in HM-enriched soils compared with the control. Different indexes confirmed that P. hortorum was affected by HM. Heavy...
