A Simple Measure for Agricultural Trade Distortion AgEcon
Roningen, Vernon O.; Dixit, Praveen M..
A simple measure is proposed that estimates the volume of trade distortion caused by the agricultural policies of trading countries. The index, called a TDS (Trade Distorted by support), would be useful for trade analysts to compare the trade impact of agricultural support policies across countries and commodities. The TDS index can be calculated largely from existing information on agricultural support. A TDS index might also be used to assess damages in trade dispute settlement cases.

Estrategia y Evaluacion en Empresas Horticolas AgEcon
Alvarez Ochoa, Claudia Patricia; Arango Almanza, Carlos Arturo.
In case of company agrarian of size medium and small, that it is the one that mainly predominates in Colombia, is appraised a short term decision making that does not correspond to a systemic process that assures the sustainability in the time. In the evaluation of the management the use of indicators of technical type predominates and without Strategy-Focused Organization. A generic example with the Balanced Scorecard methodology appears in this work for the formulation of the strategy in horticulture companies, of such form, that it allows to evaluate the global performance based on the processes characteristic of these, but that of a form simple and nearer the language of the small ones and medium producers offers a tool to them that supports its...

Amylose is one of the indicators to examine the purity of Hom Mali Rice. This research developed the test kit for determination of contaminated Hom Mali Rice. The test kit is based on the blue iodine’s color which is changed in according to amylose content. It was found that the suitable test kit composed of the steps for sample preparation which included preparing milled-white rice before they were subject to lipid removal by washing with ether. Iodine solution was used to develop the color for the prepared samples. The colors of the samples were compared with the established color bands and the levels of contaminations could be judged. The test kit has been evaluated and it was found to be effective.

Soil bulk density and aggregate size control plant root growth of Megathyrsus maximus Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Ocampo Quijano,Lucía E.; Osorio Vega,Walter N.; Martínez Atencia,Judith; Cabrera Torres,Kenneth R..
Abstract The importance of physicals properties of soil has an appreciable influence on their functions, water quality, climate control, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity, among others. These provide more ecosystem functions than just the nutritional contribution to agricultural production. Currently, the soil is under management pressure to the food production energy and raw material, which has led to its physical deterioration and degradation. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of bulk density and soil aggregate size silvopastoral systems (from tropical dry forest pastures) on the growth of guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus) cv. Mombasa. To this end, two separate experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions, by...

Heritage and patrimony of the peasantry framework to address rural development and its application in Colombia Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Pachón Ariza,Fabio Alberto; Bokelmann,Wolfgang; Ramírez Miranda,César Adrián.
Abstract The theoretical framework “heritage and patrimony of the peasantry” and its suggested operationalization potentially offers an improvement over previous approaches to analyse rural development. The first application of the concept was carried out in Colombia, quantifying rural development indicators in six rural territories. The most critical indicators to define rural development in this context were identified as follows: biodiversity, recycling and communal values. Based on these findings, human patrimony has the lowest level of all the heritages of the Colombian peasantry. Public policies to overcome these matters in the post-conflict era, should be the priority of rural development strategies.

Racial inequalities in the socioeconomic, demographic and health conditions of elderly from Maranhão State, Legal Amazon, Brazil: a population-based study Acta Amazonica
Oliveira,Bruno Luciano Carneiro Alves de; Silva,Alécia Maria da; Silva,Raimundo Antonio da; Thomaz,Erika Barbara Abreu Fonseca.
Aging with quality of life does not occur equally among the racial groups of Brazilian elderly, and few studies have analyzed this issue in the states of the Brazilian Legal Amazon. The objective of this study was to investigate racial inequalities in the socioeconomic, demographic and health conditions of elderly residents of Maranhão state, Brazil. The present work is a cross-sectional study of 450 elders aged 60 years or older included in the 2008 National Household Sample Survey. The prevalence of socioeconomic, demographic, health and habit indicators and of risk factors were estimated in white, brown and black racial categories that were self-reported by the survey participants. The chi-square test was used for comparisons (a=5%). The majority of the...

Defining upper critical temperatures for an effective climate control to reduce heat stress CIGR Journal
Sanz, Salvador Calvet.
The definition of homeotherm animal responses to temperature has traditionally based on metabolic and thermal physiology studies. The thermoneutral zone is defined as the range of ambient temperature within which metabolic rate is at a minimum, and within which temperature regulation is achieved by non-evaporative physical processes alone. As temperature raises, animals the upper critical temperature is reached, which is the ambient temperature above which thermoregulatory evaporative heat loss processes of a resting thermoregulating animal are recruited. These temperatures depend on a variety of factors including animal species and breed, age, adaptation or animal status, among others. These are influenced by other environmental conditions such as...

Groundwater resources in the State of São Paulo (Brazil): the application of indicators Anais da ABC (AABC)
Hirata,Ricardo; Suhogusoff,Alexandra; Fernandes,Amélia.
Indicators, for groundwater resources, have mostly been employed to define the present status and the degradation tendency, regarding both quantity (under- or overexploitation) and quality (natural and anthropic contamination). This work presents the application of indicators in order to draw a picture of the groundwater resources situation in the 22 Water Resource Management Units (WRMU) of the State of São Paulo. The seven Indicators (I1 to I7) applied provide a general overview of groundwater dependence (I1, I2), availability (I3, I4), and quality (I5, I6, I7). Considering public supply (Indicator 1), one observes that 9 WRMUs show high (>50% of the population supplied by groundwater), 6, intermediate (49-25%), and 7, low (<24%) dependence on...

Good agricultural practices in broiler chicken production in the state of Paraná: focus on animal welfare Ciência Rural
Souza,Ana Paula Oliveira; Molento,Carla Forte Maiolino.
ABSTRACT: Broiler chicken welfare regulation at farm level is scarce in Brazil. This research aimed to study good agricultural practices at farm level adopted by broiler chicken companies in the state of Paraná, analyzing them in relation to the promotion of animal welfare. Twenty exporting companies were contacted, 15 answered the questionnaire. The participating companies were responsible for 76.3% of the State broiler production. Indicators related to the availability and the quality of food and water are being adapted by the companies, but still need to be improved. Regarding environmental indicators, companies had concerns about air and litter quality and about the implementation of emergency systems on totally enclosed broiler houses. Natural light...
