Carbon Accumulation in Pinus taeda Estimated by X-rays Densitometry and Trunk Analysis PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Bellote, Antonio Francisco Jurado; Dedecek, Renato Antonio; Lavoranti, Osmir José; Tomazello Filho, Mario de Castro; Andrade, Guilherme de Castro.
The objective of this work was to evaluate Pinus aeda growth and based on X-ray methods of  densitometry and bole analyses to develop mathematical models to estimate carbon amount accumulated on trees of different ages varying on DBH. Five P. taeda plantations were selected on sites of different soils, thinning intensity and growing rate. On each site dominant trees were selected and discs cuts from different heights were collected and submitted to X-ray densitometry for trunk analyses. Mathematical models were developed, to generated equations to compare by testing their statistical identity and equality and to validate by bootstrap methods. The results showed that P. taeda productivity was influenced by soil and silvicultural practices; X-ray...

Quantificação e modelagem dos macronutrientes em povoamentos de bracatinga PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Ribeiro, Andressa; Machado, Sebastião do Amaral; Péllico Netto, Sylvio; Figueiredo Filho, Afonso.

ACT Now or Later: The Economics of Malaria Resistance AgEcon
Laxminarayan, Ramanan.
In the past, malaria control efforts in sub-Saharan Africa have relied on a combination of vector control and effective treatment using chloroquine. With increasing resistance to chloroquine, attention has now turned to alternative treatment strategies to replace this failing drug. Although there are strong theoretical arguments in favor of switching to more expensive artemisinin-based combination treatments (ACTs), the validity of these arguments in the face of financial constraints has not been previously analyzed. In this paper, we use a Bioeconomic model of malaria transmission and evolution of drug resistance to examine questions of optimal treatment strategy and coverage when drug resistance places an additional constraint on choices available to the...

Generality of the relationship between attributions and depression across attributional dimensions and across samples AgEcon
Persons, Jacqueline B.; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
Two hypotheses implicit in the use of composite measures of attributions in tests of learned helplessness theory (but not implicit in the theory itself) were tested: the hypotheses that relationships between depression and the three types of attributions are equal in magnitude, and linear. To test these hypotheses, data from three published studies of the reformulated learned helplessness theory of depression (Abramson, Seligman, & Teasdale, 1978) were reanalyzed. The hypothesis that internal, stable, and global attributions are equally related to depression was tested and rejected. Increases in internal attributions were related to depression in one sample: increases in global attributions for negative events were related to depression in two samples:...

Firm-specific information, product differentiation, and industry equilibrium AgEcon
Perloff, Jeffrey M.; Salop, Steven.
Where consumers have imperfect information about specific firms’ prices and lack information about the market, firms have informational market power. In general, improving the consumer’s information about each firm’s price will not necessarily lower average market price. We show, however, that certain types of improvements will lower price. Moreover, a reduction in barriers to entry (e.g., capital costs) will lower price-holding information constant. Where a significant number (but not all) consumers have perfect information, single-price equilibria are impossible.

A standard computable general equilibrium (CGE) model in GAMS AgEcon
Lofgren, Hans; Harris, Rebecca Lee; Robinson, Sherman.
Over the past decade, the increasing power and reliability of microcomputers and the development of sophisticated software designed specifically for use with them has led to significant changes in the way quantitative food policy analysis is conducted. These changes cover most aspects of the analysis, ranging from the collections and analysis of socioeconomic data to the conduct of model-based policy simulations. The venue of the computations has shifted from off-site mainframes dependent on highly trained operators and significant capital investment in supporting equipment, to desktop and laptop computers dependent only on the occasional availability of electricity. This means that it is now feasible to quickly transfer new techniques between IFPRI and...

The dynamic annihilation of a rational competitive fringe by a low-cost dominant firm AgEcon
Berck, Peter; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
A low-cost dominant firm will drive all competitive fringe firms out of the market if all firms have rational expectations; however, the dominant firm will not predate (price below marginal cost). Since a dominant firm will not drive out fringe firms if they have myopic expectations, it may be in the dominant firm’s best interests to inform the fringe. The effects of governmental intervention on the optimal path and welfare are presented.

A dynamic model of oligopoly in the coffee export market AgEcon
Karp, Larry S.; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
A linear-quadratic, dynamic feedback oligopoly model that nests various market structures is used to estimate the degree of competitiveness and the adjustment paths of the two largest coffee exporters, Brazil and Colombia. Their estimated behavior is relatively competitive. This subgame perfect dynamic model is-compared to a standard static oligopoly model and the open-loop model (the dynamic generalization of the standard static model). Both classical and Bayesian tests of open-loop and feedback dynamic models are reported.

Dielectric constant obtained from TDR and volumetric moisture of soils in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Kaiser,Douglas Rodrigo; Reinert,Dalvan José; Reichert,José Miguel; Minella,Jean Paollo Gomes.
Soil moisture is the property which most greatly influences the soil dielectric constant, which is also influenced by soil mineralogy. The aim of this study was to determine mathematical models for soil moisture and the dielectric constant (Ka) for a Hapludalf, two clayey Hapludox and a very clayey Hapludox and test the reliability of universal models, such as those proposed by Topp and Ledieu and their co-workers in the 80's, and specific models to estimate soil moisture with a TDR. Soil samples were collected from the 0 to 0.30 m layer, sieved through a mesh of 0.002 m diameter and packed in PVC cylinders with a 0.1 m diameter and 0.3 m height. Seven samples of each soil class were saturated by capillarity and a probe composed of two rods was inserted in...

Performance of the Groenevelt and Grant Model for Fitting Soil Water Retention Data from Brazilian Soils Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Armindo,Robson André; van Lier,Quirijn de Jong; Turek,Maria Eliza; Reis,Aline Mari Huf dos; Melo,Marina Luciana Abreu de; Ramos,Maria Elisa Palma; Ono,Gabriela Massame.
ABSTRACT The soil water retention curve (SWRC) is essential for vadose zone hydrological modeling and related applications. In 2004, Groenevelt and Grant (GRT) presented a mathematical model for describing the SWRC and reported its mathematical versatility and good fit to soils from a Dutch database. In order to evaluate the application of GRT to SWRCs of Brazilian soils, we aimed to analyze the performance of GRT for 72 soils from Brazil. Besides that, the obtained results with GRT for these soils were compared to the fitting performance of the most frequently used models: Brooks and Corey (BC) and van Genuchten-Mualem (VGM). The three models were fitted to available soil water retention data by minimizing the sum of square errors. The Pearson correlation...

Drying kinetics of ‘babassu’ mesocarp AGRIAMBI
Rosa,Jhonatas C.; Mendonça,Andreza P.; Oliveira,Angélica dos S.; Ribeiro,Sylviane B.; Batista,Andréia do R.; Araújo,Maria E. R..
ABSTRACT ‘Babassu’ mesocarp flour has been used by the pharmaceutical, human food and animal feed industries. However, there is lack of standardization in the production, as well as absence of information on the management of the product’s quality. Thus, the objective of this study was to dry the ‘babassu’ mesocarp in forced-air oven and solar dryer, adjust different mathematical models to the experimental data, as well as to quantify the levels of proteins and crude fiber of the produced flour. The criteria for the adjustment were the coefficient of determination, magnitude of the mean relative error, standard deviation of estimate and the residual distribution trend. Drying in the shortest time occurred in oven at 60 °C (370 min), leading to water...

Solar drying of cowpea bean combined with drying in a heat accumulator dryer AGRIAMBI
Alves,Ronaldo A.; Queiroz,Alexandre J. de M.; Figueirêdo,Rossana M. F. de; Silva,Wilton P. da; Gomes,Josivanda P..
ABSTRACT As solar radiation is abundant in Brazil during most of the year and this source of energy is renewable and non-polluting par excellence, solar drying of agricultural products is a promising methodology. The objective of this study was to dry cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] bean grains using solar energy in different exposure times, adjusting the mathematical models and calculation of the effective diffusivity. Drying was performed during the day with samples exposed to the sun; during the night, half of the samples were put to dry in a heat accumulator dryer for nighttime drying and the other half was left on a laboratory bench as control. Cowpea bean grains had initial and final moisture contents of 65.42 and 6.73% d.b. (after drying in...

Drying and characterization of myrtle pulp AGRIAMBI
Feitosa,Regilane M.; Figueirêdo,Rossana M. F. de; Queiroz,Alexandre J. de M.; Lima,Flávia C. dos S.; Oliveira,Emanuel N. A. de.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to develop formulations of myrtle pulp with emulsifier/stabilizer (Emustab® and Super Liga Neutra®) in different proportions; characterize the best foam, based on density and over-run; and determine drying kinetics at temperatures of 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 oC and thicknesses of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 cm. Incorporation of 1.5% Emustab® and 0.5% Super Liga Neutra® to the myrtle pulp (F1) proved to be effective for foam-mat drying. The addition of additives influenced the physicochemical parameters of the whole myrtle pulp. The Midilli et al. model showed the best fit to the experimental data.
