THE EFFICIENCY OF SHOOT AND PLANTLET FORMATION OF Cephaelis ipecacuanha AFTER THREE SUBCULTURES IN VITRO Ciência Rural
Lameira,Osmar Alves; Costa,Marly Pedroso da; Pinto,José Eduardo Brasil Pereira.
Multiple adventitious shoot formed from internodal segments of Cephaelis ipecacuanha cultured 25 days on Gamborg basal medium (GAMBORG et al., 1968) supplemented with 6.66mM 6-benzylaminopurine there was a maximum of nine shoots per segment and an average of five shoots per segment formed. The presence of gibberellic acid in the subculture media promoted shoot elongation in all treatments. The shoots attained 3cm in height and rooting of 100% after 35 days of culturing upon Murashige and Skoog's basal medium (MS), added with 4.92mM indole-3-butyric acid, 0.87m gibberellic acid and 0.1% activated charcoal. Further growth was accelerated after the transfer to 1/2 MS without growth regulators. Rooted plantlets transferred to potting soil could be successfully...

Pb and Cd on growth, leaf ultrastructure and essential oil yield mint (Mentha arvensis L.) Ciência Rural
Jezler,Caroline Nery; Mangabeira,Pedro Antônio Oliveira; Almeida,Alex-Alan Furtado de; Jesus,Raildo Mota de; Oliveira,Rosilene Aparecida de; Silva,Delmira da Costa; Costa,Larissa Correa do Bomfim.
Contamination of medicinal plants with heavy metals as Pb and Cd can affect the growth and the essential oil production of the plants and represent a risk to those who consume as medicine. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of absorption and localization of Pb and Cd on growth, ultrastructural aspects of leaves and essential oil yield and composition of Mentha arvensis, applied on the soil with increasing concentrations (8, 16, 32, 64 and 128mg kg-1). There was a differential absorption of Pb and Cd by M. arvensis mainly concentrated in the roots. Pb was found in small amounts in the leaves while Cd largely exceeded the safety limit without symptoms of toxicity. The ultrastructural analysis revealed the metal accumulation on vesicles surrounding the...

Planting time for maximization of yield of vinegar plant calyx (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Castro,Nilmar Eduardo Arbex de; Pinto,José Eduardo Brasil Pereira; Cardoso,Maria das Graças; Morais,Augusto Ramalho de; Bertolucci,Suzan Kelly V.; Silva,Fabiano Guimarães da; Delú Filho,Nelson.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the yield of calyxes of Hibiscus sabdariffa L, a medicinal plant, at four planting times in Lavras - MG. The treatments were four planting times (October 18th, November 15th, December 18th 2001 and January 15th 2002) and a harvest was proceeded when practically there were no developing calyxes, almost at the end of the plant cycle. The numbers of calyxes per plant, the fresh and dry biomasses of calyxes and quality were taken into account. It follows that planting time influenced yield per plant and the fresh and dry biomasses of calyxes, differing from each other by Tukey test at 5%. In October planting, there was a higher yield (2,522kg/ha) with a yield 5.24 as high relative to the planting of the month of...

Tissue culture of Cecropia glaziovii Sneth (urticaceae): vegetative micropropagation and plant regeneration from callus Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Alves,Marcos Nopper.
Cecropia glaziovii is a tree with used in Brazilian popular medicine. Methods allowing the clonal propagation of this species are of great interest for superior genotype multiplication and perpetuation. For this reason, we examined the effect of different culture media and different types of explants on adventitious shoot regeneration from callus and buds of C. glaziovii. Leaves, petioles and stipules obtained from aseptically grown seedlings or from pre-sterilized plants were used to initiate cultures. Adventitious shoot regeneration was achieved when apical and axillary buds were inoculated on gelled Murashige & Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 6-benzylaminopurine alone (BAP) (1.0, 5.0 or 10.0 mg L-1) or combined with -naphthalene acetic acid...

Influence of radiation level on plant growth, yield and quality of essential oil in carqueja Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Fabiano Guimarães; Pinto,José Eduardo Brasil Pereira; Cardoso,Maria das Graças; Nascimento,Evandro A.; Nelson,David Lee; Sales,Juliana de Fátima; Mol,Daniel José de S..
In this research it was studied the influence of the radiation intensity on growth and on the essential oil yield of Baccharis trimera. The plants growth was studied under four levels of radiation: 100, 60, 50 and 20% during a 259-day long period. Plants were then evaluated for height, number of nodes, branches, stem diameter (at the height of the colon), biomass formation, and content and composition of the oil. The highest level of radiation caused increases in all of the variables evaluated, except for height, which was reduced with increasing radiation. Essential oil content also increased with increasing level of radiation.
