This study is in keeping with the comprehension of summer mortalities that affects Crassostrea gigas Pacific cupped oysters' spa!. The aim is to characterize genetic families in a physiologic way, and to compare these families qualities with the noticed mortalities. The employed approach consists, on the one hand, in characterising Iivestocks qualities with instantaneous measurings of respiration and biometry. They respectively allow to estimate basic metabolism and to calculate state index. On the other hand, it consists in measuring differently degrees of resistance by the observation of respiration and mortality after thermal stresses. This study allowed to show that the environment and the stresses only act as indications of a pre-existent wealilless,...

Divergence in physiological factors affecting swimming performance between anadromous and resident populations of brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis ArchiMer
Crespel, Amelie; Dupont-prinet, A.; Bernatchez, L.; Claireaux, Guy; Tremblay, R.; Audet, C..
In this study, an anadromous strain (L) and a freshwater-resident (R) strain of brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis as well as their reciprocal hybrids, were reared in a common environment and submitted to swimming tests combined with salinity challenges. The critical swimming speeds (Ucrit) of the different crosses were measured in both fresh (FW) and salt water (SW) and the variations in several physiological traits (osmotic, energetic and metabolic capacities) that are predicted to influence swimming performance were documented. Anadromous and resident fish reached the same Ucrit in both FW and SW, with Ucrit being 14% lower in SW compared with FW. The strains, however, seemed to use different underlying strategies: the anadromous strain relied on its...

Wessel, Nathalie.
The aim of this Ph‟D was to study the biotransformation and the genotoxicity of two PAH of interest, namely the benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and the fluoranthene (Fluo), in the common sole Solea solea, which is a benthic species sensitive to chemical pollution. The use of in vitro exposure models and the application of two different chemical analytical techniques allowed demonstrating that, as in higher vertebrates, the dihydrodiols and the phenols of BaP and Fluo are the major metabolites produced by sole liver enzymes. In vitro, the genotoxic potential of BaP and Fluo was demonstrated in sole, by the production of DNA adducts and oxidative DNA damage. The genotoxicity of Fluo appeared to be 50 fold less important than the genotoxicity of BaP. In the case of BaP,...

Reduction du nitrate dans les sediments marins. Comparaison des activites mesurees in vitro et in situ ArchiMer
Esteves, J; Bonin, P; Blanc, F; Mille, G; Bertrand, J.
In vitro nitrate reduction in hydrocarbon-polluted marine sediments has been studied by flow-through system. By analysing the rate of nitrate comsumption as a function of nitrate concentration the authors determined the Michaelis-Menten kinetics parameters. (km = 330 mu M; vax = 2.0 mu M/g super(-1)/h super(-1). The authors found a value of 60 mu M/m super(-2)/h super(-1) for the rate of in vitro nitrate consumption derived from the above kinetic parameters and from the nitrate concentration in the sediment. In parallel a value of 67.4 mu M/m super(-2)/h super(-1) was found for the rate of nitrate consumption under in situ conditions. The great similarity between both results would favor the in vitro technique as a valid and more convenient one.

Associations between tissue fatty acid composition and physiological traits of performance and metabolism in the seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Chatelier, Aurelien; Mckenzie, David; Prinet, Aurelie; Galois, Robert; Robin, Jean; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Claireaux, Guy.
Seabass were fed for 4 months with diets where the lipid was provided as either canola oil (CO), palm oil ( PO) or fish oil (FO), to generate diversity in their tissue fatty acid (FA) composition and investigate how this influenced major traits of exercise performance, cardiac performance and respiratory metabolism. In particular, based upon previous observations, we investigated the hypothesis that enriching the fish tissues with oleic and linoleic acids (OA, 18:1n-9 and LA, 18:2n-6, respectively) from the CO and PO diets would improve maximum exercise and cardiac performance, and increase aerobic metabolic scope. This proved to be the case; exercise respirometry on bass fitted with cardiac flow probes revealed that those fed CO and PO diets had a...

Deciphering the molecular adaptation of the king scallop (Pecten maximus) to heat stress using transcriptomics and proteomics ArchiMer
Artigaud, Sebastien; Richard, Joelle; Thorne, Michael A. S.; Lavaud, Romain; Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan; Jean, Fred; Peck, Lloyd S.; Clark, Melody S.; Pichereau, Vianney.
Background: The capacity of marine species to survive chronic heat stress underpins their ability to survive warming oceans as a result of climate change. In this study RNA-Seq and 2-DE proteomics were employed to decipher the molecular response of the sub-tidal bivalve Pecten maximus, to elevated temperatures. Results: Individuals were maintained at three different temperatures (15, 21 and 25 degrees C) for 56 days, representing control conditions, maximum environmental temperature and extreme warming, with individuals sampled at seven time points. The scallops thrived at 21 degrees C, but suffered a reduction in condition at 25 degrees C. RNA-Seq analyses produced 26,064 assembled contigs, of which 531 were differentially expressed, with putative...

Cauchi, B.
Metabolic potentialities of bacterial communities in marine water after Crude Oil pollution (Arabian Light) and in marine water after pollution and treatment (enrichment: Inipol EAP 22) have been studied and compared. With data analysis: regressions, hierarchical ascending classification and multifactor correspondence analysis, the treatment gives rise to conservation and one increase of enzymatic pool (second day) of the bacterial sample as a combined metabolic homogeneity contrary to pollution impact. The direct assimilation of hydrocarbons looks more regular and slow without treatment.

Metabolic substrates are not mobilized from the osmoregulatory organs (gills and kidney) of the estuarine pufferfishes Sphoeroides greeleyi and S. testudineus upon short-term salinity reduction Neotropical Ichthyology
Prodocimo,Viviane; Souza,Carine F.; Pessini,Cristina; Fernandes,Luiz Claudio; Freire,Carolina A..
The marine-estuarine species of pufferfishes Sphoeroides testudineus and S. greeleyi are very efficient osmoregulators. However, they differ with respect to their tolerance of salinity reduction. During low tide S. testudineus remains in diluted estuarine waters, whereas S. greeleyi returns to seawater (SW). The hypothesis tested here was that the short-term mobilization of metabolic substrates stored in their main osmoregulatory organs would correlate with this differential tolerance. Fishes exposed to 5‰ (for 6 h) were compared to those kept in 35‰. Branchial and renal contents of triglycerides, protein and glycogen were evaluated, and total ATPase activity accounted for the tissues' metabolism. Plasma osmolality, chloride and glucose, hematocrit, and...

Intermittent sustained swimming in 'matrinxã' Brycon amazonicus (Bryconidae: Bryconinae): hematological and metabolic responses Neotropical Ichthyology
Fabrizzi,Fernando; Moraes,Gilberto; Hackbarth,Araceli; Almeida,Luciana Cristina de; Arbeláez-Rojas,Gustavo; Nunes,Cleujosí da Silva.
In fish, studies on a wide variety of physiological effects of exercise have been reported since a long time. It has been attributed special attention to some types of exercise, however, its application as a healthful practice in the rearing and welfare of farming fish is rising in last few years. In this particular, long-term intermittent sustained swimming (ISS) has been not yet explored. In this work, the freshwater fish Brycon amazonicus was submitted to (ISS) for 30 days at velocity of 1.0 body-length sec-1 for 12h interspaced by 12h under still water. Hematology and metabolism were evaluated. Exercised fish decreased 30% the erythrocyte number and hemoglobin was unvaried. The stores of liver glycogen and muscular triacylglycerol (TAG) were increased...

Temperature affects the hypoxia tolerance of neotropical Cichlid Geophagus brasiliensis Neotropical Ichthyology
Pereira,Jéssica A.; Veronez,Alexandra C.S.; Coppo,Gabriel C.; Duca,Charles; Chippari-Gomes,Adriana R.; Gomes,Levy C..
ABSTRACT Oxygen and temperature are the most limiting factors in aquatic environments. Several species are exposed to variations of these factors in water because of physical, chemical and biological processes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the metabolic profile and the tolerance to the hypoxia of Geophagus brasiliensis exposed to changes in temperature and oxygen availability. The fish were exposed to 20 and 90% of oxygen saturation combined with different temperatures (20°, 24° and 28° C) for 8 h. Hepatic and muscular glycogen, as well as the activities of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), citrate synthase (CS) and their ratios were evaluated. Both glycogen and MDH activity showed a significant difference in the...

Effect of salinity on survival, growth and biochemical parameters in juvenile Lebranch mullet Mugil liza (Perciformes: Mugilidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Lisboa,Viviana; Barcarolli,Indianara Fernanda; Sampaio,Luís André; Bianchini,Adalto.
Teleost fish growth may be improved under isosmotic condition. Growth and metabolic performance of juvenile Mugil liza (isosmotic point: 12‰) were evaluated after 40 days in different salinities (0, 6, 12 and 24‰). Tests were performed in quadruplicate (30 fish/tank; 0.48 ± 0.1 g body weight; 3.27 ± 0.1 cm total length) under controlled water temperature (28.2 ± 0.1ºC) and oxygen content (>90% saturation). Fish were fed on artificial diet (50% crude protein) four times a day until apparent satiation. Results showed that salinity influenced juvenile mullet growth. Fish reared at salinity 24‰ grew better than those maintained in freshwater (salinity 0‰). Gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity and whole body oxygen consumption showed an U-shape-type response over the...

OceanDocs
Aristizabal, E.O..
Knowledge of the life history of fish larvae is of practical importance to understand variations in the survival rate not only for cultivated fish but also for fishery biology studies. With the aim of recognizing critical changes during the first days of life of red porgy larvae, the oxygen consumption, growth, and food utilization were studied. After hatching, the larvae were transferred to two 400 L fiberglass tanks with microalgae (Nannochloropsis oculata)and enriched rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis)as initial food. During the incubation and larval rearing, water temperature was kept at 18.0 ± 0.5ºC and salinity ranged from 33.0 to 34.0 psu. Results indicate a decrease in larval growth between day 3 and 4 after hatching, when larvae opened their mouths,...

OceanDocs
Aristizabal, E.O..
The utilization of the energy of food by red porgy (Pagrus pagrus Linnaeus, 1758) from the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) was studied. From the energetic point of view, it is proposed that the strategy of patitioning, utilization and storage of the energy of food, is an indicator of the organism response to the environmental conditions. The main objective was to know the proportion of the energy of food derived to the different components of the bioenergetics budget. In order to estimate the monthly energy investment in reproductive growth, chemical analysis of gonads from fishes caught by the fishery fleet and from laboratory studies were performed. Two indexes were used to calculate the energy investment in female ovaries: the proportion of net daily energy...

The metabolic status of diapause embryos of <i>Artemia franciscana</i> (SFB) OMA
Clegg, J.S.; Drinkwater, L.E.; Sorgeloos, P..
The brine shrimp <i><i>Artemia</i> franciscana</i> is widely used in aquaculture and basic research in areas ranging from molecular biology to evolution and ecology. A key of its life history involves the production of encysted embryos whose development is halted (enters diapause) at the gastrula stage. These shelled embryos are released into the aqueous environment where diapause continues until terminated by suitable conditions that produce an "activated embryo", which then can resume development when conditions permit. Very little is known about the metabolism of diapause embryos, in contrast to activated embryos, which have been studied extensively. We have examined selected features of metabolism in diapause embryos produced in...

VERIFICATION OF THE MECHANISM OF GLYPHOSATE RESISTANCE IN ITALIAN RYEGRASS BIOTYPES Planta Daninha
VARGAS,L.; RUCHEL,Q.; AGOSTINETTO,D.; LAMEGO,F.P.; LANGARO,A.C.; PIESANTI,S.R..
ABSTRACT The intense use of glyphosate for weed control led to the emergence of several cases of resistance to this herbicide. Weeds can survive the application of herbicides due to several factors, which may or may not be related to the herbicide site of action. The objectives of this study were to quantify the accumulation of shikimate in ryegrass biotypes in response to glyphosate application; investigate possible mutations on the EPSPs gene in susceptible and resistant biotypes; and evaluate the response of ryegrass biotypes to the application of glyphosate after treatment with a metabolism inhibitor of cyt P450 monooxygenase. The seeds of ryegrass biotypes with suspected resistance came from the municipality of São Valentim, RS (SVA 1 and SVA 4) and...
