ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of urea fertiliser on the bromeliad, Aechmea fasciata. Plants were submitted to weekly treatments with a solution of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 g urea L-1. After 210 days of the experiment, biometric variables of growth and development of the root and shoot systems were analysed, together with foliar levels of chlorophyll a and b, and of carotenoids. The experimental design was of randomised blocks with four replications; eight plants were used per plot. The data were submitted to regression analysis. The highest values for chlorophyll a and carotenoid content were obtained at a concentration of 1.23 g L-1 urea, and for chlorophyll b at a concentration 1.75 g L-1 urea. Plants of A. fasciata submitted... |

ABSTRACT Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for plants, due to its role as a functional, structural, or regulatory cofactor in a large number of enzymes. The element is necessary for the synthesis of tryptophan, which is a precursor of indoleacetic acid. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of two cowpea cultivars fertilized with four doses of Zn (0.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 kg of Zn ha-1) regarding dry grain yield (PGS), in addition to quantifying leaf and grain Zn content and grain crude protein. The experiment was conducted in the town of Brejo, in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. A 4 x 2 factorial scheme was used with four replications. Response functions were adjusted by calculating the Zn doses which provided a maximum technical... |

ABSTRACTUnderground water reserves in the semi-arid region of Brazil are stored in the crystal formations that in large part have high concentrations of salt. However, the scarcity of this resource makes the use of this water necessary for various activities, including agriculture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of brackish water on the electrical conductivity and pH of the nutrient solution, and on the production, water consumption and the uptake of nutrients in Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis L.) under a hydroponic system. The experimental design was completely randomised, with four replications and six levels of water salinity (0.2, 1.2, 2.2, 3.2, 4.2 and 5.2 dS m-1), obtained by adding NaCl to the local water supply, with this water... |

ABSTRACT African mahogany is a species preferred by many entrepreneurs as an investment in the forestry sector. However, there are few studies or research on the species, especially in Brazil. The aim of this work was to study the efficiency of nutrient uptake, accumulation, distribution and use in Khaya ivorensis and Khaya senegalensis, in addition to aspects of growth variables and of dry matter partitioning as a function of mineral fertilisation. Morphological, physiological and nutritional parameters were determined in the African mahogany plants 140 days after transplanting (DAT). The greatest zinc (Zn) content was detected in the shoots of both the Khaya ivorensis and Khaya senegalensis plants, accounting for more than 50% of the accumulated total of... |

The occurrence of micronutrient deficiencies, mainly of manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) in "cerrado" soils, has been increasing in several crops, including bean. Such a problem is caused by high rates of liming material applied entirely on the soil surface. In this study, the effects of the leaf application of Mn and Zn rates were evaluated. Three experiments were carried out: two in greenhouse and one under field conditions. The greenhouse experiments were set up using a randomized block design and a 5 x 5 factorial, with three replicates, consisting of five rates of Mn (0, 75, 150, 300, and 600 g ha-1) and five rates of Zn (0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 g ha-1) applied via leaves at the 25th day, or both alternatively parceled at 25 and 35 days after emergency... |

Information on improved fall panicum cultivars and agronomical pratices is scarce because of the relatively small importance of this crop in Brazil. The present study aimed to evaluate levels of nitrogen sidedressing on plant development and biochemical characteristics of two fall panicum cultivars. The experiment was set up under plastic tunnel conditions in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil, with plants growing inside asbestos-cement boxes. The experimental design was a randomized block setup and treatments consisted of six levels of nitrogen fertilization (0, 40, 80, 120, 160, and 200 mg L-1) applied at the onset of tillering on two fall panicum cultivars (AL Mogi and AL Tibagi). The application of increasing levels of nitrogen to fall panicum plants... |

Two soybean (Glycine max) cultivars were used in this study, Ocepar 4, rated as moderately resistant to Meloidogyne incognita race 3 but susceptible to M. javanica, and 'BR 16', susceptible to both nematodes. The effect of nematodes infection on the uptake and transport of N, P and Ca to the shoot was studied in plants growing in a split root system. The upper half was inoculated with 0, 3,000, 9,000 or 27,000 eggs/plant while the lower half received 15N, 32P or 45Ca. Infected plants showed an increase of root but a decrease of shoot mass with increasing inoculum levels. In general, total endogenous nutrients increased in the roots and tended to decrease in the shoots with increasing inoculum levels. When concentrations were calculated, there was an... |

Abstract This research determined the effect of four nitrogen (N) doses on the nutritional behavior of '(N), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), respectively, in banana Williams, during five plant development stages and two productive cycles. The treatments were as follows: 1) absolute control, 2) 0 N, 3) 161 kg N ha-1, 4) 321.8 kg N ha-1 and 5) 483 kg N ha-1, respectively. A multivariate approach of the differences among cycles was used to adjust the models and eliminate their individual effect, with a randomized complete block design with repeated measurements over time. There were significant differences among plant development stages, with an increase in nutrient accumulation in the banana plant, there were no differences... |
