Melo,Francisco de Brito; Cardoso,Milton José; Andrade Júnior,Aderson Soares de; Ribeiro,Valdenir Queiroz.
ABSTRACT Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for plants, due to its role as a functional, structural, or regulatory cofactor in a large number of enzymes. The element is necessary for the synthesis of tryptophan, which is a precursor of indoleacetic acid. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of two cowpea cultivars fertilized with four doses of Zn (0.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 kg of Zn ha-1) regarding dry grain yield (PGS), in addition to quantifying leaf and grain Zn content and grain crude protein. The experiment was conducted in the town of Brejo, in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. A 4 x 2 factorial scheme was used with four replications. Response functions were adjusted by calculating the Zn doses which provided a maximum technical...

Lira,Raquele Mendes de; Silva,Ênio Farias de França e; Silva,Gerônimo Ferreira da; Santos,Alexandre Nascimento dos; Rolim,Mário Monteiro.
ABSTRACTUnderground water reserves in the semi-arid region of Brazil are stored in the crystal formations that in large part have high concentrations of salt. However, the scarcity of this resource makes the use of this water necessary for various activities, including agriculture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of brackish water on the electrical conductivity and pH of the nutrient solution, and on the production, water consumption and the uptake of nutrients in Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis L.) under a hydroponic system. The experimental design was completely randomised, with four replications and six levels of water salinity (0.2, 1.2, 2.2, 3.2, 4.2 and 5.2 dS m-1), obtained by adding NaCl to the local water supply, with this water...

Manganese and zinc leaf application on common bean grown on a "Cerrado" soil Scientia Agricola
Teixeira,Itamar Rosa; Borém,Aluízio; Araújo,Geraldo Antônio de Andrade; Fontes,Renildes Lúcio Ferreira.
The occurrence of micronutrient deficiencies, mainly of manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) in "cerrado" soils, has been increasing in several crops, including bean. Such a problem is caused by high rates of liming material applied entirely on the soil surface. In this study, the effects of the leaf application of Mn and Zn rates were evaluated. Three experiments were carried out: two in greenhouse and one under field conditions. The greenhouse experiments were set up using a randomized block design and a 5 x 5 factorial, with three replicates, consisting of five rates of Mn (0, 75, 150, 300, and 600 g ha-1) and five rates of Zn (0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 g ha-1) applied via leaves at the 25th day, or both alternatively parceled at 25 and 35 days after emergency...

Nutrient content of biomass components of Hamlin sweet orange trees Scientia Agricola
Mattos Jr.,Dirceu; Quaggio,José Antônio; Cantarella,Heitor; Alva,Ashok Kumar.
The knowledge of the nutrient distribution in trees is important to establish sound nutrient management programs for citrus production. Six-year-old Hamlin orange trees [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb.] on Swingle citrumelo [Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf. x Citrus paradisi Macfad.] rootstock, grown on a sandy Entisol in Florida were harvested to investigate the macro and micronutrient distributions of biomass components. The biomass of aboveground components of the tree represented the largest proportion of the total. The distribution of the total tree dry weight was: fruit = 30.3%, leaf = 9.7%, twig = 26.1%, trunk = 6.3%, and root = 27.8%. Nutrient concentrations of recent mature leaves were in the adequate to optimal range as suggested by interpretation of leaf...

Nutrient contents and production of rocket as affected by nitrogen concentrations in the nutritive solution Scientia Agricola
Cavarianni,Rodrigo Luiz; Cecílio Filho,Arthur Bernardes; Cazetta,Jairo Osvaldo; May,André; Corradi,Mariana Marotti.
Empiricism in the use of nutrient solutions is frequent. Several times the same nutrient solution is used to grow different species based only on morphological similarities. This practice may lead to nutritional imbalances, affecting not only the production but also the quality of the product due to an accumulation of nitrate. An experiment under hydroponic conditions - the NFT system - was conducted with the aim of evaluating the effect of the concentration of nitrogen in the nutrient solution on the production and on the nutrient and nitrate contents of rocket (Eruca sativa) salad leaves. The experiment was carried out in spring 2003, in a randomized block design and in a 4 x 3 factorial design, with four replicates. Four nitrogen concentrations in the...

Sources and rates of potassium for sweet orange production Scientia Agricola
Quaggio,José Antonio; Mattos Junior,Dirceu; Boaretto,Rodrigo Marcelli.
Fruit yield and quality of citrus trees (Citrus spp.) is markedly affected by potassium (K) fertilization. Potassium chloride is the major source of K, even though other sources are also available for agricultural use when crops are sensitive to chloride or where potential for accumulation of salts in soils exists. Only few studies addressed the effect of K sources on yield and quality of citrus fruits. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate K2SO4 and KCl fertilizer sources at 0, 100, 200, and 300 kg ha-1 per year K2O on fruit yield and quality of 'Pêra' and 'Valencia' sweet orange trees in the field. The experiments were carried out in a 4 × 2 factorial design under randomized complete blocks, with four replicates from 2001 to 2004. Fruit...
