Effects of long term application of compost and poultry manure on soil quality of citrus orchards in Southern Italy. Organic Eprints
Canali, S.; Trinchera, A.; Intrigliolo, F.; Pompili, L.; Nisini, L.; Mocali, S.; Torrisi, B..
A six-year study was carried out in an organically managed orange orchard located in Sicily (Southern Italy) to assess the effect of compost and organic fertilizers utilisation on soil quality. Adopting a randomized-block experimental design with three replicates, four treatments were carried out. In treatments 1 and 2, two different composts (C1 from distillery by products and C2 from livestock wastes) were applied. The plots of treatment 3 were fertilized using dried poultry manure. The control treatment was fertilized with mineral/synthetic fertilizers. In order to verify the hypothesis that composts and organic fertilizers improve soil fertility, soil quality was evaluated by selecting dynamic soil parameters, as indicators linked to C and N cycles....

Legume-based catch crops inprove N-supply without increasing the N2O emission Organic Eprints
Li, X.; Sørensen, P.; Petersen, S.O.; Olesen, J.E..
Legume-based catch crops (LBCCs) may be an important source of nitrogen (N) in organic crop rotations since they are capable of taking up N both from the soil and from the atmosphere via biological N fixation (BNF). Consequently, they may help improve the crop yield through enhancing soil fertility and crop N supply. On the other hand, the legume-based catch crops may also have a negative impact on the climate as they may enhance the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), which is a powerful greenhouse gas. Therefore, the findings from two research projects HighCrop (Organic RDD 2) and Legume Future (EU-FP7) are promising, as they show that a higher level of N2O emission is not necessarily the consequence of growing LBCC.

Soil functionality assessment in degraded plots of vineyards Organic Eprints
Priori, S.; Lagomarsino, A.; Agnelli, A.E.; Valboa, G.; Castaldini, M.; Pellegrini, S.; Simoni, S.; D'Avino, L.; Gagnarli, E.; Guidi, S.; Goggioli, D.; Landi, S.; D'Errico, G.; Perria, R.; Puccioni, S.; Leprini, M.; Zombardo, A.; Storchi, P.; Costantini, E.A.C..
Land transformation to adapt fields to mechanization in perennial crop farming is a common practice which includes land levelling, deep ploughing, stone-breakage and clearing, application of fertilizers and amendments. Manipulation of the natural soil profile along its entire depth can severely disturb the naturally existing chemical physical, biological and hydrological equilibrium (Costantini and Barbetti, 2008; Costantini et al., 2013). The most common effects of the land transformation are mixing of soil horizons and soil truncation, which result in reduction of soil depth and available water, organic matter depletion, enrichment of calcium carbonate content in the topsoil, imbalance of some element ratio, and decline in the activity and diversity of...

Effects of green manure storage and incorporation methods on nitrogen release and N2O emissions after soil application Organic Eprints
Carter, Mette S.; Sørensen, Peter; Petersen, Søren O.; Ma, Xiuzhi; Ambus, Per.
More efficient use of green manure-derived nitrogen (N) may improve crop yields and reduce environmental impacts in stockless organic arable farming. In this 3-month incubation study, we tested a new strategy where green manure leys are harvested and preserved until the following spring either as compost mixed with straw or as silage of harvested ley biomass. Grass-clover compost or silage was soil-incorporated by either simulated ploughing (green manure placed at 15 cm depth) or harrowing (green manure mixed into the upper 5-cm soil horizon) in order to assess treatment effects on net release of plant-available N, nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes, and soil respiration. Grass-clover silage provided the highest net N release with similar results for the two...

Improving Soil Structure and Nitrogen Use Efficiency by GPS-controlled Precision Tillage Technology in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Zanen, Ir. M.; Koopmans, Dr. Ir. C.J..
A field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of tillage technique (GPS-controlled traffic system and traditional tillage) and level of fertilization (farmers’ practice or phosphate equilibrium) on yield, soil structure and nitrogen use efficiency. Manure inputs could be seriously reduced without yields being diminished during the first three years of the intensive crop rotation. Results suggest that an improved soil structure under GPS-controlled precision tillage enhances nitrogen use efficiency.

Plant-availability of catch crop S following spring incorporation Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Thorup-Kristensen, K.; Askegaard, M..
Catch crops might reduce sulphate leaching and thereby increase the overall S use efficiency in crop rotations. At 2 experimental sites in Denmark (a sandy loam and a coarse sand) S uptake of catch crop species was measured. Furthermore net release of S following incorporation of this material (S contents 0.13-1.03%, C:S ratios of 40-329 and lignin content of 1-10.8%) was investigated in a pot experiment with spring barley in sandy soil. The catch crops showed huge differences in their ability to sequester S. The best catch crops (legumes on sandy loam), sequestered 10-12 kg S ha-1 and the poorest catch crops (ryegrass and sorrel on coarse sand), sequestered less than 3 kg S ha-1. The S mineralisation rates were highest for crucifers (57-85% of total S...

Productivity and N-leaching in organic dairy grass-arable crop rotations Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J; Askegaard, M; Søegaard, K.
Due to increasing size of Danish organic dairy farms uniform grazing of all cropped land becomes inexpedient due to long distance to the milking facilities. We investigated nutrient dynamics and feed production in two dairy crop rotations with internal differences in proportion of grazing and cutting. One six year crop rotation represents close to the farm buildings (barley [Hordeum vulgare L.] undersown with grass-clover [Lolium perenne L.–Trifolium repens L.] - 4 years of grass-clover - spring barley/catch crop) and another represents further away (barley undersown with grass-clover, 2 years of grass-clover -barley/catch crop - maize [Zea mays L.]/catch crop - lupin [Lupinus angustifolius]/catch crop). In each of the crop rotations was made five...

ESTOQUE DE CARBONO E NITROGÊNIO EM SOLO SOB SISTEMAS DE MANEJO E CULTURAS DE INVERNO Organic Eprints
Gubiani, E..
Soil organic matter (SOM) constitutes the largest reservoir of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) of the earth's surface. In agricultural soils, the organic fraction is of great importance in maintaining soil quality, while contributing a small fraction. Thus, the adoption of soil management practices and cover crops are important to promote the C and N accumulation in the soil and consequently improve its quality. The no-tillage system (NT) as conservation practice improves the soil structure, water infiltration and increases the contribution of C and N in the soil by deposition of crop residue on the surface. Thus, the soil is kept constantly covered by organic residuce of plants during their vegetative stage. This study aims to evaluate the stocks of C and N...

Soil organic phosphorus forms under different soil management systems and winter crops, in a long term experiment Organic Eprints
TIECHER, T.; SANTOS, D.R.; CALEGARI, A..
Organic phosphorus (P) is an important source of phosphate for plants both in natural environments and in cultivated soils. Growing plants with high P recycling capacity may increase the importance of organic forms in phosphate availability mainly in undisturbed soils. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of long period of cultivation of different winter species under different soil management systems in the distribution of soil organic P forms, in the P content stored into the soil microbial biomass (SMB) and in the acid phosphatase enzyme activity. The experiment was established in 1986 with six winter treatments (blue lupine, hairy vetch, oat, radish, wheat and fallow) implanted in a Rhodic Hapludox in southern Brazil, under no-tillage...

If modelling modelling with Daisy Organic Eprints
Pedersen, Anders.
Oral presentation in working group 5: Buffer strips and catch crops: cosmetic or beneficial? In most countries sufficient knowledge of catch crops has been acquired by farmers to apply them as a basic element of "Good Agricultural Practice". Buffer strips seem less known and applied. Various contributions point at adverse effects, such as increase in N leaching on buffered fields, overloading of buffer capacity and increase in denitrification. Hence, a major question to be discussed is how buffer strips should be designed and managed to achieve the desired effects whilst avoiding or minimising adverse effects? Another question is to what extent buffer strips should be accompanied by other measures, such as catch crop cultivation. Convenors: Adrie van...

Contribution of N from frequently chopped green manure to a succeeding crop of barley Organic Eprints
Frøseth, Randi Berland; Hansen, Sissel; Bakken, Anne Kjersti.
The aim of the present work was to study to what extent N in mulched green manure herbage contributes to spring barley grain yield the subsequent year. The green manure herbage was either chopped and left on stubble (GML) or removed (GMR). On silty clay loam with spring incorporated green manure the subsequent barley grain yield was 10% higher with GML than with GMR. The additional grain N yield of 4 kg ha-1 with GML corresponded to only 3 % of N in above-ground green manure biomass. On loamy soil with late autumn incorporated green manure the treatments did not affect the grain yield the subsequent year. How large part of the N that was lost through leaching or gaseous emissions and how large part that was built into soil organic matter was not measured....

N-Bedarf und N-Effizienz von Mischfruchtanbausystemen mit Ölpflanzen im ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Schochow, Martin; Behrendt, Andrea.
Mixed cropping systems with oil crops are of growing interest in organic farming. They can offer agricultural advances like competition against weeds, support against lodg¬ing and buffering of yield fluctuations. The aim of the cultivation method is to gain additional oil yields for energy or feed purposes. The reported higher land-efficiency-ratios of those mixed cropping systems should lead to higher nutrient requirements. But it is unknown if the different crops just compete for rare soil nutrients or if comple¬mentary effects in mixed cropping systems lead to higher nutrient efficiency. In a field study N-contents in plants and N uptake of diverse mixed cropping systems were compared to sole cropping systems. In linseed (Linum usitatissivum) or false...

Biomass production and N2-fixation in seven grass-legume mixtures Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
Inclusion of forage legumes in low-input grassland mixtures improves biomass production and soil fertility trough addition of nitrogen (N) from N2-fixation. The impacts of different mixture of legumes and companion grasses on the N production of the forage mixture have rarely been investigated under comparable soil and climatic conditions. We conducted a field experiment on a sandy soil at two nitrogen levels with seven two-species grassland mixtures: alfalfa (Medicago sativa), bird’s-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), red clover (Trifolium pratense), or white clover (Trifolium repens) in mixture with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), and white clover in mixture with meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis), timothy (Phleum pratense), or hybrid ryegrass...

Optimalisatie bemesting Van Strien: Voortgang 2014 Organic Eprints
Hospers-Brands, A.J.T.M.; Strien, J. van.
