The Asian Maize Biotechnology Network (AMBIONET): A Model for Strengthening National Agricultural Research Systems AgEcon
Pray, Carl E..
This report reviews the impacts of the Asian Maize Biotechnology Network (AMBIONET), organized by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) with funding from the Asian Development Bank to strengthen the capacity of public maize research institutions in China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to produce high-yielding, disease resistant, stress tolerant maize cultivars. It was found that, during its lifetime (1998-2005), AMBIONET clearly benefited researchers and institutions in participating countries, as well as CIMMYT. In addition, there was good progress toward developing improved cultivars. Asian farmers are just beginning to gain from the work, but their future benefits will likely pay for AMBIONET’s relatively...

Mikronährstoffmangel? Ein gesundheitsökonomischer Bewertungsansatz AgEcon
Zimmermann, Roukayatou; Stein, Alexander J.; Qaim, Matin.
Micronutrient malnutrition is a serious problem in many developing countries. Recently, agricultural technologies have been discussed as a complement to other intervention programs. Plant breeding, targeted at developing staple foods with higher contents of essential vitamins and trace minerals, could benefit the poor in particular. Yet, the economic repercussions of such innovations are still unclear. Because traditional models of technology assessment are inappropriate to capture the specific ramifications, we suggest a health economics approach. Herein, micronutrient malnutrition is understood as a phenomenon that causes health costs through diseases and premature deaths. Details of the methodology are discussed within an ex ante study of Golden Rice in...

Analyzing Market Price Transmission, Government Intervention and Weather Shocks for Rice Market in the Philippines AgEcon
Jolejole-Foreman, Maria Christina; Mallory, Mindy L..
In the Philippines, where rice is considered the most important food crop, attempts to influence rice prices have been prevalent. The government, through National Food Authority (NFA) has sought to establish stocks and control imports to stabilize prices since its establishment in 1972 to support farm gate prices and reduce retail price of rice. But data shows divergence in retail prices and farm prices since mid 1960s. In this paper, we use vector autoregression (VAR) to analyze the movement of Philippine rice margins with government stocks and weather supply shocks to able to determine government effectiveness in actual times of market stress. Comparing VARs across regions, we are able to identify the regions in which price margins are significantly...

The Pilot Food Price Subsidy Scheme in the Philippines: Its Impact on Income, Food Consumption, and Nutritional Status AgEcon
Garcia, Marito; Pinstrup-Andersen, Per.
This report presents the results of a pilot targeted food price subsidy scheme implemented in three provinces of the Philippines for 12 months beginning in mid-1983. It assesses the economic and nutritional effects of the scheme, analyzes its technical and administrative feasibility, and considers possible alternatives. The scheme consisted of price discounts on rice and cooking oil and a nutrition education component.

The efficacy of bispyribac sodium, fenoxaprop-p-ethyl + ethoxysulfuron, and propanil+butachlor were evaluated in greenhouse and field experiments, Weed Science, Crop and Environmental Sciences Division, IRRI in February - April 2013. The field plots had high weed density that had 4-6 leaves when the herbicides were applied at 15 days after land preparation. In the greenhouse experiment we grew Echinocloa crus-galli, Ludwigia octovalvis, Cyperus iria, weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea Acc. 105798 (THA)), and rice cultivars KDML105 and IR64 in pots. At 7 days after rice and weed germination, we sprayed herbicides to the above-mentioned species using a research track sprayer. The results showed that bispyribac sodium and fenoxaprop-p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron...
