Credibility is particularly important in organic food systems because there are only marginal visual and sensorial differences between organic and conventionally produced products, requiring consumers to trust in producers’ quality claims. In this article I explore what challenges the credibility of organic food systems and I explore how credibility of organic food systems can be maintained, using the Danish organic food system as a case study. The question is increasingly relevant as the sale of organic food is growing in Denmark as well as globally, and consumers’ expectations of organics continuously evolve. The inquiry is threefold, first I outline a conceptual framework for understanding trust and credibility in the food system, secondly I explore the... |

As conservation agriculture and organic farming are currently considered as environmentally friendly options for producing food, this study explores the motivations and problems of organic European farmers that apply at least two of the following techniques: (i) no-tillage, (ii) reduced tillage and/or (iii) green manures conservation practices. We carried out a survey about motivations and problems of 159 farmers located in 10 European countries with a questionnaire with closed-ended questions. Data were analysis with a principal component analysis followed by clustering to identify groups of farmers that share the same type of motivations and problems. The most important motivations are related to soil preservation concerns and problems are mainly linked... |

The shepherd profession and modern society do not seem to fit together. At the same time, the ecological importance of sheep farming is increasingly (re)detected. In this study, the perspectives of social farming for the pastoral vocation are investigated. What are the prospects and development opportunities today for sheep farming? Could sheep farming and social farming complement each other? Two methods of qualitative research are used to answer these questions: Qualitative interviews and participant observation. A wide range of social work areas and structures of sheep-farms are existing. The size of livestock is between three and 700 sheep, the social activities range from weekly guided farm tours to daily support of social-emotional disadvantaged... |

The paper explores whether an organic control system could include elements of an improvement standard as compared to the current minimum requirement standards. It is based on a review of rules of organic certification and of literature. The discussion explores whether an approach of agreeing individual improvement targets between operator and certification body could allow the consideration of some areas of the organic principles that are currently not audited in the form of minimal certification requirements. Such a system would allow the determination of whereof whether an operator is on the way to making improvements and strengthen operators’ responsibility. |

This paper links social science research and agricultural policy through an analysis of support for organic agriculture and food. Globally, sales of organic food have experienced 20% annual increases for the past two decades, and represent the fastest growing segment of the grocery market. Although consumer interest has increased, farmers are not keeping up with demand. This is partly due to a lack of political support provided to farmers in their transition from conventional to organic production. Support policies vary by country and in some nations, such as the US, vary by state/province. There have been few attempts to document the types of support currently in place. This research draws on an existing Framework tool to investigate regionally... |

Ugandan homegarden systems are sustainable small-scale solutions for food security and conservation containing a great diversity of native plant species and preserving the associated time-tested traditional knowledge for nutrition and conservation. Furthermore, the people of Uganda have a diversity of uses for these native species. However, these systems and traditions are under threat for a variety of reasons. Organic may hold some of the keys for the revitalization of these oases of diversity and culture. The organic markets in Uganda now sell only a few species but can embrace the great diversity through increasing access to organic markets for more small producers and indigenous plant species. |

The preconditions for farming is constantly changing together with society at large. Many Swedish farmers give up farming or divert their production. Today’s consumers demand food at low cost as well as they demand the traditional mosaic agricultural landscape. What features characterize farmers’ social conditions today? How does the farmer relate to society at large and how does the society relate to the farmer? Are there institutions in society that take the farmers’ social conditions into account? How do we accomplish a sustainable development of agriculture in a social perspective? The aim of the project is to build knowledge about how one can achieve a social situation that the farmer percieve as sustainable. The study... |

This paper analyzes the links and overlappings between traditional knowledge and biodiversity in the context of ecological family farming in southern Brazil. The data presented are part of an ethnographic study carried out among a network of ecological farmers, Ecovida, in the west of Santa Catarina state. The current global patent regime, most prominently the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has had direct effects on seed production and agricultural food crops. In a scenario of increasing creation of patents, patent regulations, provisions on cultivars (plant varieties and seed breeding) and a number of other global trade control mechanisms, family farmers and other related... |

The rise of socially responsible and impact investing funds provides evidence for an increased interest private investors have in combining their financial and ethical concerns. At the same time, citizens increasingly engage in food networks and take on a vital role in the governance of agri-food systems. These developments might benefit farms and firms which are committed to sustainable food and seek funding. Through different community financing models, they can involve citizens who aim to support the development of a more sustainable food system. This contribution presents case study evidence on community financing in the German organic food sector and discusses the role it can play in food system transformation. |

The research work focuses on Lebanese farmers’ behaviour, attitudes and beliefs with regards to farming activity and specifically investigates the motivations that lie behind their choices. The study was carried out in cooperation with the American University of Beirut (AUB), in particular with the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, which recently launched the Healthy Basket (HB) project, a Community-Supported Agricultural initiative aimed at supporting Lebanese organic farmers. The work also aims to explore AUB-assisted conventional farmers’ barriers or risks for not converting to organic farming. The insights from this exploratory research highlighted differences between conventional and organic farmers’ views on farming activity. The study... |
