Aggregation and organic matter under alfisol soil tillage for Eucalyptus plantation PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Prevedello, Juliana; Vogelmann, Eduardo Saldanha; Kaiser, Douglas Rodrigo; Fontanela, Eracilda; Reinert, Dalvan José; Reichert, José Miguel.
Aggregation can suffer permanent or temporary changes to cyclical variations induced by management practices for soil and plant growth. The study evaluated the temporal and spatial variation of the stability of water stable aggregates and its relationship with the organic matter content in an Hapludalf in Santa Maria municipality, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The treatments were four tillage systems for deployment of Eucalyptus grandis: no-tillage, chisel, chisel tillage plus harrowing and rotary tiller. Soil samples were collected in the layer of 0.00 to 0.05 m for determination of the density, and stability in water of stable organic matter aggregates contents of the soil. Chisel, chisel tillage plus harrowing and rotary tiller resulted in lower...

Soil compaction by machine traffic and least limiting water range related to soybean yield PAB
Beutler,Amauri Nelson; Centurion,José Frederico; Silva,Alvaro Pires da; Centurion,Maria Aparecida Pessôa da Cruz; Leonel,Cristian Luarte; Freddi,Onã da Silva.
The research aimed to evaluate machine traffic effect on soil compaction and the least limiting water range related to soybean cultivar yields, during two years, in a Haplustox soil. The six treatments were related to tractor (11 Mg weight) passes by the same place: T0, no compaction; and T1*, 1; T1, 1; T2, 2; T4, 4 and T6, 6. In the treatment T1*, the compaction occurred when soil was dried, in 2003/2004, and with a 4 Mg tractor in 2004/2005. Soybean yield was evaluated in relation to soil compaction during two agricultural years in completely randomized design (compaction levels); however, in the second year, there was a factorial scheme (compaction levels, with and without irrigation), with four replicates represented by 9 m² plots. In the first year,...

Occasional soil tillage, liming, and nitrogen fertilization on long-term no-tillage system PAB
Yagi,Renato.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the residual effects of occasional soil tillage in a 17-year-old, no-tillage system, associated with liming and nitrogen fertilization, on the crop yields and chemical properties of a very clayey Oxisol in the South of Brazil. A randomized complete block design in split-split plots was used, with two soil managements (with or without plowing), two liming treatments (with or without the required dose to raise base saturation to 70%), five N doses applied on side-dress (0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 times the recommended amounts), and four replicates. A rotation system was used with corn and soybean in the summer, and with wheat and black oats in the winter. The residual effects of occasional soil tillage in a...

Chemical and biological attributes of a lowland soil affected by land leveling PAB
Parfitt,José Maria Barbat; Timm,Luís Carlos; Reichardt,Klaus; Pinto,Luiz Fernando Spinelli; Pauletto,Eloy Antonio; Castilhos,Danilo Dufech.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the relationship between soil chemical and biological attributes and the magnitude of cuts and fills after the land leveling process of a lowland soil. Soil samples were collected from the 0 - 0.20 m layer, before and after leveling, on a 100 point grid established in the experimental area, to evaluate chemical attributes and soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC). Leveling operations altered the magnitude of soil chemical and biological attributes. Values of Ca, Mg, S, cation exchange capacity, Mn, P, Zn, and soil organic matter (SOM) decreased in the soil profile, whereas Al, K, and MBC increased after leveling. Land leveling decreased in 20% SOM average content in the 0 - 0.20 m layer. The great majority of the...

Selecting soil quality indicators for different soil management systems in the Brazilian Cerrado PAB
Stefanoski,Diane Cristina; Figueiredo,Cícero Célio de; Santos,Glenio Guimarães; Marchão,Robélio Leandro.
Abstract The objective of this work was to assess soil quality indicators obtained with different datasets to compare soil management systems in the Brazilian Cerrado. Three criteria were used to select soil physical, chemical, and biological indicators: the full set of indicators obtained, with 36 parameters, for which all the physical, chemical, and biological soil properties were determined; a subset of indicators selected by principal component analysis (20 parameters); and a subset of indicators with some frequency of use in the literature (16 parameters). These indicators were obtained from the following management systems: no-tillage, conventional tillage, and native cerrado vegetation. Soil samples were collected at 0.0-0.1-m soil depth, and soil...

Abstract The objective of this work was to present an approach to evaluate soil functions in agroecosystems and their impact on environmental services (ES). An approach with case studies was proposed to assess the relationship between the establishment and management of agroecosystems, in three Brazilian biomes (Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, and Caatinga), and their environmental services provision, considering the specificities of each area. A set of soil parameters that can be used as indicators to monitor changes in the agroecosystem was also proposed. The environmental services types most affected by the establishment and management of the agroecosystems were the supporting and provisioning services, showing the potential of agricultural management in...

Assis Júnior,Raimundo Nonato de; Mota,Jaedson Cláudio Anunciato; Freire,Alcione Guimarães; Alencar,Thiago Leite de.
Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate soil porous media quality under different uses, as well as to propose a new index to monitor changes in its structure due to management: the Srelative index. An Inceptisol under irrigated banana cultivation and secondary forest, in the Brazilian Apodi Plateau, was evaluated at three soil layers (0.0-0.1, 0.1-0.2, and 0.2-0.3 m) as to: particle size, particle and bulk density, organic matter content, intrinsic permeability to air, and water retention curve. Total porosity, index for pore continuity (defined by the ratio between soil intrinsic permeability to air and aeration porosity), volume of blocked pores, and the S and Srelative indices were determined. The Srelative index was calculated as the ratio...

Abstract Human pressure on ecosystems has undesirable impacts on human well-being. After the Millennium Project, much interdisciplinary research has been developed worldwide aiming to understand these impacts on ecosystem flows and processes, and to learn about the costs and the benefits of ecosystem services for production. Soil provides many ecosystem services, since its multi-functionality is the basis for food production, water filtration, nutrient cycling, and other goods essential to life. This article presents the main concepts and classifications of soil ecosystem services and of its functions; the indicators and the methods for assessment, modeling, and valuation of ecosystem services; some recent applications to assess and evaluate impacts of...

Weeds occurrence and importance under distinct intercropping systems Planta Daninha
Concenço,G; Ceccon,G; Schwerz,F; Fonseca,I.C; Leite,L.F.
Intercropping systems involving corn are often subjected to stress caused by weeds, which usually result in 30-70 per cent yield loss when no control practice is applied. This study aimed to assess the composition of weed communities due to soil coverage, at neighboring areas submitted to distinct soil managements. The soil was collected at field and the study was conducted under a greenhouse in three steps: (1) weeds composition and importance within each treatment; (2) comparison between treatments (distinct crop and intercropping managements); (3) infestation in the area as a whole. The weed composition in the short term is influenced by the management of the area, but this shift requires some more years to be reflected at the soil seed bank. Some weed...

Brachiaria ruziziensis and herbicide on the yield of upland rice Planta Daninha
Nascente,A.S.; Guimarães,C.M.; Cobucci,T.; Crusciol,C.A.C..
The correct management of cover crops in no-tillage aims to obtain greater benefits with its introduction in agricultural systems. The use of forage species such as Brachiaria, due to the large amount of biomass and for persisting longer on the ground, has become a good option. In this sense, an important point is the time interval between the cover desiccation with glyphosate and planting of rice in order to obtain higher operating income in the sowing, greater availability of nutrients, greater presence of straw on the soil surface, and lower release of possible allelopathic substances. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of the management of B. ruziziensis, with or without herbicide, preceding the crop planting, in the yield components...

Upland rice yield as affected by previous summer crop rotation (soybean or upland rice) and glyphosate management on cover crops Planta Daninha
Nascente,A.S; Crusciol,C.A.C; Stone,L.F; Cobucci,T.
The appropriate chemical management of cover crops in no-tillage aims to obtain greater benefits with its employment in agricultural systems. The objective of this study was to assess upland rice yield as affected by the previous summer crop, species and desiccation timing of cover crops by glyphosate. Sown cover crops were sown (November 2007), followed by rice in half of the experimental area and soybean in the other half (November 2008). After the harvesting of these crops, the same cover crops were sown again (March 2009) and followed by upland rice in the total area (November 2009). The experiment consisted of the combination of five cover crops (fallow, Panicum maximum, Brachiaria ruziziensis, B. brizantha and Pennisetum glaucum), four desiccation...

Economic gains of improving soil fertility and water holding capacity with clay application: the impact of soil remediation research in northeast Thailand AgEcon
Saleth, Rathinasamy Maria; Inocencio, Arlene; Noble, Andrew D.; Ruaysoongnern, Sawaeng.
Declining productivity of agricultural soils in Northeast Thailand is a challenge facing land managers and farmers. A program was initiated in 2002 to investigate the potential role of incorporating clay-based materials into degraded soils as a means of enhancing productivity. This research report attempts to provide an ex-post assessment of the field level impact and economic viability of this approach, using the empirically derived estimates of the average income impacts that the application of bentonite or clay technology has generated among farm communities in Northeast Thailand. From an exclusive IWMI perspective, the impact evaluation suggests that the program has a net present value (NPV) of US$0.41 million with a benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of 2.44...

SOIL, NUTRIENT, AND WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS USED IN U.S. CORN PRODUCTION AgEcon
Christensen, Lee A..
Corn production uses over 25 percent of the Nation's cropland and more than 40 percent of the commercial fertilizer applied to crops. Thus, corn farmers' choices of soil, nutrient, and water management systems can have a major impact not only on their own profitability, but also on the environment. If sound economic and environmental choices are to be encouraged, it may help to assess relationships between operator and farm characteristics and the adoption of management techniques by corn farmers. Data from the 1996 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) of U.S. corn farms and producers are analyzed for this purpose, supplemented by a literature survey on factors that influence corn farm management choices. Relationships were found between certain...
