Inacio, A.; Barros, P.C..

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Cordo, H.D.; Cassia, M.C.; Hansen, J.E..
Taking into account the commercial catches by the Argentine fleet and other fleets that operated around Malvinas Islands (SW Atlantic) in the 1987-1999 period, the current state of southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis) is assessed. A sequential analysis (Cohort Analysis) tuned, in an ADAPT conceptual framework with six independent indices of abundance, was performed for the southern blue whiting stock of the SW Atlantic. Commercial catch data of the Argentinian fleet and other fleets that operate around Malvinas Islands were used. The indices included catch per unit of effort of different fleets and data from Argentine-British research surveys. The analysis showed that the decreasing trend in biomass observed in previous studies went on during...

Hansen, J.E.; Buratti, C.C.; Garciarena, A.D..
Advise on Biologically Allowable Catch (BAC) for Southern Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita, 41° S-48° S) during 2012. To assess the evolution since 1990 and the current status of Argentine anchovy Southern stock, an Age Structured Population Model (ASPM) was used. Modeling of catches according to a four-month period pulses allowed to predict annual yields so as to get them close to the nominal catches officially recorded. Some independent indexes of stock abundance (eight acoustic estimates of total biomass and five estimates of spawning stock biomass obtained with the Daily Egg Production Method) and the proportion of individuals per age group assessed during the same cruises were used to calibrate the fitting. No stock-recruitment function but a...

Pope's Cohorts Analysis was modified to extend its application to a wider range of natural mortality, M and fishing mortality, F rate values. The modified method maintains the simplicity of the one established by Pope and does not require to resolve any non lineal equation in each cohort reconstruction process. The relative errors obtained when estimating the number of individuals per age (maximum and mean in absolute value) showed acceptable levels within the five domains (M and F pairs of values) analyzed in this work. The new method can be adapted to a particular situation (M and F values range) simply solving an optimization problem (minimization of the maximum relative error absolute value) easily achieved using a calculation sheet or considering the...

Evaluación pesquera del bacalao austral (Salilota australis) del Atlántico Sudoccidental OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Cassia, M.C.; Hansen, J.E..
Information about the austral cod Salilota australis caught in the Patagonian shelf including the area around Malvinas Islands (SW Atlantic)as well as some data from annual research surveys carried out as of 1992 to 1998 were analyzed. On this basis, the fishery was studied and the abundance of the stock inhabiting the area under Argentine control was estimated. To calculate the optimum yield as a function of both age-at-first catch and fishing mortality, the Yield-per-Recruit model was used. Some biological reference points were also identified and an exploitation strategy based on low risk of collapse recommended. Austral cod landings, although small, showed an increasing trend as of 1990 that reached a maximum of 14,900 tons in 1998. Most of the catches...

An analysis is presented of reproduction aspects of Argentine Sea blue whiting. The species spawns in the study area mostly during August and September, although some spawners have been detected even in November. Total length at 50-per-cent maturity was 35,4 cm for the males and 38.0 for the females. Significant differences between the length of maturity for individuals of the continental shelf compared to those of the slope, have been obtained. The southern blue whiting is a discontinuous spawner, showing one annual reproduction peak. Fecundity was investigated on the basis of samples collected in 1978 by the RV"Walther Herwig" and "Shinkai Maru". A significant positive correlation was also observed at relating oocyte dry weight and gonad factor, whereas...

OceanDocs
Prenski, L.B.; Ehrhardt, N.M.; Legault, C..
Hoki, Macruronus magellanicus, is an important resource in the Argentinean multispecific southern demersal fishery. The species is distributed South of 46°S between the 50 and 200 meter isobaths. Thesouthern demersal fishery was almost nil prior to 1987, becoming more relevant toward the end of the 1980's. International fleets operating through several fishery agreement were those of the ex-Soviet Union,Bulgaria and Japan. Research on the abundance of hoki resources were initiated in the early 1970's; however, fishery research have been noticeably enhanced since 1992. In this study existing information on the Argentinean hoki fishery is integrated and an assessment of the status of exploitation of the species is carried out.As a result of the analyses, a...

State of the stocks and change in the abundance of demersal fisheries resources in the member countries of the CSRP OceanDocs
Gasceul, D.; Laurans, M.; Sidibe, A.; Barry, M.D..
This communication presents a synthesis of the work undertaken within the framework of the FIAS project, by the “Single-species Analysis” module. This work focuses on statistical analyses of commercial fishing and the data from scientific trawling surveys, in order to deduce the current state of exploited stocks and to better understand the ecosystems of the sub-region. This relates to the analyses of about 20 stocks, distributed in the waters of the various countries and covering a broad range of ecological characteristics. Three approaches were used: (1) analyses of a time series of estimates of abundance indices obtained from GLM-type methods applied to survey or commercial data; analysis of a time series of catches and catches per unit of effort used...

Hernandez, D.R.; Perrotta, R.G..
The problem in the definition of a relative annual abundance index using a General Linear Model is posed. The possible factors generating changes in the catch per unit effort (CPUE) are discussed and the parameterization of the model is analyzed, in particular the Sigma-restrictive parameterization. This report considers the problem caused by the presence of interactions of first order that include the factor Year in the model. It has been mathematically demonstrated that in the presence of these interactions, the index series is not proportional to the abundance annual mean of the resource. An approach of practical order to evaluate the possible effect of the interactions that include the factor Year in the index is considered using the percentage of...

Evaluation of the Status of the Namibian Hake Resource (Merluccius spp.) Using Statistical Catch-at-Age Analysis OceanDocs
Kirchner, Carola; Kainge, Paul; Kathena, Johannes.
Namibian hake is the most important fish resource in Namibia. This monograph is a compilation of all the hake data, historic and recent, that has been used to inform stock assessment and management since the late 1970s. It presents the statistical catch-at-age analysis used to evaluate the state of the Namibian hake resource under different assumptions. This analysis treats the two hakes, Merluccius paradoxus and M. capensis, as a single stock. The data and modeling show that the stock has not as yet recovered to its maximum sustainable yield level, despite foreign fishing effort having been removed in 1990. Best estimates suggest the current stock to be roughly 20% of pre-exploitation levels; however this figure is sensitive to model assumptions. Signs...

Lasta, M.L.; Parma, A.M.; Pascual, M.S.; Zampatti, E.A..
The fishing of the mussel (Mytilus edulis platensis)off the Buenos Aires coast was alternatively carried out over two main grounds: "Faro Querandí" and "Quequén". The fluctuations of fishing periods on these grounds must have been determined by economic considerations. An abandoned bed may be considere, for practical purposes, depleted. The understanding of the dynamics of this spatially distributed stock could enable us to link more closely the biological cycles with those of the fishing activity. Rotative fishing is suggested as a managment strategy for this fishery.

Estimación de índices de abundancia de pescadilla de red (Cynoscion guatucupa) a partir de datos de campañas de investigación empleando modelos lineales generales OceanDocs
Ruarte, C.O; Rico, M.R..
Stripped weakfish is one of the ensemble of species known as “variado costero” most frequently landed. Considering that fact, determination of abundance indices is particularly relevant to apply assessment models and make recommendations to allow for a proper fishery management. The aim of this study was to obtain those indices of the species derived from research cruises carried out in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone AUCFZ area (34°S-39°S) in the 1993-2006 period. In order to improve the traditional estimate accuracy modeling was used. To formulate the general linear models year, stratum, length, bottom salinity, depth factors and population data such as mean size and juveniles percentage were used. The percentages of variance explained in the...

The life history of Chondrichthyans results in a low capacity to recover from the fishery human impact, Mustelus schmitti is the most landing shark in Argentina (SW Atlantic)where reductions in the abundance have been detected. The sustainability of M. schmitti to exploitation using a demographic analysis, was examined. The intrinsic rate of population increase (r)and extinction risk under several harvesting strategies were estimated. For this purpose a stage-structured female-only matrix model was applied, considering the mortality and reproductive parameters to each stage. The estimate of length at maturity from the logistic curve was 56.04 cm. The fertility per female ranged between 1 and 15 pups and it was increased with total length. The Mortality...
