Palynology of the Miocene browncoal mined at haanrade (Limburg. Netherlands) Naturalis
Manten, A.A..
The browncoal of the quarry “Anna” at Haanrade belongs to layer F, the middle one of the three layers into which the main browncoal deposit splits towards the NW. It correlates with the lower part of the German series, and in all likelihood is of middle miocene age. The coal is very rich in pollen grains, and the latter belong to a great diversity of species. Spores are less common. Of all pollen species the taxonomic position has been traced. The pollen diagram shows no striking fluctuations. It seems likely that a moderately subtropical climate prevailed during the miocene.

Arnica montana L Naturalis
Andreas, Ch.H..

Flowers free from the environment? Naturalis
Pijl, L. van der.
At the jubilee of Professor Lam it seems suitable to contribute a paper on the flower as a functional unit, though it is in the form of a kind of book-review. Lam himself wrote on the more fundamental connections between flowering and lower plants and on the basal morphological elements of the flower. He gave general schemes for relations among the flowering plants, in which he aimed at a synthesis between materialism and metaphysics, micro-evolution and macro-evolution, autonomous orthogenesis and selectivistic adaptation.

Excursie Naturalis
NN.

Differences between the eggmasses of Alderia modesta and Limapontia depressa Naturalis
Hartog, C. den.
The eggmasses of the sacoglossan slugs Alderia modesta (LovéN) and Limapontia depressa A. & H. have often been described, but the differences between them have never been pointed out. ENGEL, GEERTS & VAN REGTEREN ALTENA (1940) even have written, that it was impossible to distinguish the spawnmasses of Alderia modesta from those of Limapontia depressa. During a stay at the Zoological Station at Den Helder in summer 1953, however, it appeared to me that there are clear differences between the eggmasses of the two species.

The influence of Algae on the natural environment Naturalis
Baas Becking, L.G.M..
In the development of the various scientific disciplines certain contacts have been established between neighbouring sciences, while other endeavour still proceeds almost on its own. The study of the influence of the environment on chemical reactions has given us a large part of physical chemistry, while the inverse, the study of the influence of chemical reactions on the (natural) environment has been, in the last decades, developed as geochemistry. Much of our physiology and ecology deals with the influence of the environment upon the organism, while the inverse, the influence of the organism upon the natural environment (geobiology) has hardly been studied systematically. This influence is great, as already realized by Pasteur a century ago. Moreover,...

A Survey of the Littoral Gastropoda of the Netherlands Antilles and other Caribbean Islands Naturalis
Coomans, H.E..
This brief survey is based on the material collected by Dr. P. Wagenaar Hummelinck in 1936/37, 1948/49, and 1955. Station numbers only are cited; they refer to the “Description of new localities” in Volume IV of this series (1953; marine habitats p. 56-77) and to a “Third list of localities” which will be published in a forthcoming volume. Other localities, which are not numbered, are, as a rule, briefly described in the text. Material assembled by a few other collectors has been added to Hummelinck’s collection. The names of the collectors are always mentioned, abbreviated as follows: Av.: R. Aveledo, Caracas Be.: J. G. van den Bergh, Aruba BL.: T. Blok, Curaçao Bo.: Mrs van den Bos, St Maarten Co.: R. M. Collens, Tobago Ga.: Wiesje and Hendrikje, the two...

The Phytogeography of Taraxacum, with special reference to Europe Naturalis
Soest, J.L. van.
1. Introduction. The genus Taraxacum, lacking in the tropical regions, is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere and only locally found in the southern one. The evolutional history has been discussed by von Handel-Mazzetti; though this seems to be a speculative business, according to its extrapolative character, his study contains many valuable thoughts. He places the origin of Taraxacum in western central Asia, with which I can agree. The density of sections is also greatest here. The genus in evolution expanded to the East, the North and the West; though partly interrupted, the tracks can be more or less reconstructed. From a morphological point of view, he concluded to the existence of species of lower and higher organisation level, the latter...

Argyreia lamii, a new species from the Malay Peninsula Naturalis
Ooststroom, S.J. van.
Among a number of specimens of Convolvulaceae from the Malay Peninsula sent to me for identification by Mr. J. Sinclair, Singapore, I found a species of Argyreia, which appeared to be new to botanical science. I named it A. lamii in honour of Prof. Dr. H.J. Lam, Director of the Rijksherbarium and Professor of Systematic Botany at the University of Leiden, to whom the present Jubilee-volume of Blumea is dedicated.

Revision of the Burseraceae of the Malaysian area in a wider sense. Vb. Haplolobus, a revised revision Naturalis
Lam, H.J..
On studying newly received material of Haplolobus, mostly from New Guinea, the key in Husson & Lam 1953 ¹) proved to be far from satisfactory in several respects. This is why all material now available has been given a critical consideration or reconsideration, as the case may be, and from this originated a new revision with a new key, which is presented here. Since the flowers of the various Haplolobus species are of the same type and very uniform, and since they are wanting in so many specimens either in one of the sexes or in both, it appeared, for the time being at least, unfeasible to use them for differential characteristics in the key. The same holds true for the fruits. Only when abundant flowering and fruiting material will be available is...

Korte mededelingen Naturalis
NN.

Observations on the algal vegetation of the northern pier at Hoek van Holland, made from October 1953 till August 1954 Naturalis
Hoek, C. van den.
The Netherlands’ coast being sandy and muddy is not suitable for most algal growth. Dikes, piers and harbour-works replace the rocks elsewhere. The pier at Hoek van Holland is one of these artificial rocky coasts. It has been constructed with basalt blocks and other hard stones, viz. the so called “Nilvoordste steen” and “Doornikse steen”, both from Belgium. The pier projects into the sea about 1350 m. On the southern side it is washed by the mouth of the Nieuwe Waterweg, on the northern side by the North Sea. A little more (fig. 1) up the Nieuwe Waterweg there are several basins enclosed by a dam parallel to the pier and a number of dams at right angles to it, thus replacing the rockpools of natural rocky shores.

Botanical reconnaissance of Nusa Barung and Blambangan, South East Java Naturalis
Jacobs, M..
Both Nusa Bailing Island and Blambangan Peninsula consist of limestone hills; they are nowadays uninhabited and forest-clad. On Nusa Bailing the forest is mixed and not conspicuously dominated by certain genera. On Blambangan the forest contains much bamboo, which points to ancient human influence, and a number of species characteristic for ‘monsoon-forest’. A few remarks on history, and data about the author’s routes, are given. Most of the plants collected are recorded in sketches of the vegetation. The f. lobata of Gmelina elliptica (Verben.) is reduced. Novelties are not reported, and it is doubtful whether the areas in question deserve much further attention for botanical exploration.

Observations on the plankton of some inland waters, especially ”wielen”, in the Netherlands Naturalis
Leentvaar, P..
In August 1941, the Municipal Waterworks of Amsterdam started an investigation on the biological an hydrographical conditions of the water in some ”wielen”. ”Wielen” are exceptionally deep pools. They originate from old dikebursts caused by high floods of the river. The new dike has been constructed around the ”wiel” which had been formed behind the breach by the whirling water (see figure A). The drinking water supply from the dunes of the Westcoast of Holland, which, owing to a rise of the salty groundwater level is running short, is a serious problem. New sources of fresh water must be found and a plan has been made for the construction of some deep basins for the storage of river water.

Note on Vipera russelii (Shaw) Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
This note deals mainly with the systematic position of the subspecies of Vipera russelii occurring in the Malay Archipelago, and with its distribution; some remarks are added concerning the distribution of V. russelii outside the archipelago. Two subspecies of Vipera russelii have been described from the Malay Archipelago. Mertens (1927, p. 183) made a specimen from Endeh Island the type of a new subspecies: Vipera russelii limitis Mertens. In a later paper, Mertens (1930, p. 327) refers the two specimens taken in the island of Komodo by Dunn (1927, p. 4) to this same subspecies, and according to Neuhaus (1935, p. 49) the Javan specimen described by him also belongs to Vipera russelii limitis. Kopstein (1936, pp. 259-262, pl. 3) discusses the differences...
