The article deals with seasonal dynamics for the biomass, composition and number of dominant species of marine phytocenoses near the Sheskharis cape. Seasonal changes in the phytobenthos are also considered. Besides, long-term data are available that evidence for a recovered state of benthic phytocenoses near the Sheskharis cape after recent considerable pollution. |

The primary production in the Sargassian sea was measured by three methods: radiocarbon (Sorokin, 1956), chlorophyllic (Finenko, 1966) and a modification of the radiocarbon method which takes into account phytoplankton adaptation to the light. Comparison of the results showed that the primary production value measured by the modified radiocarbon method is on the average 105.7% higher than the values obtained by the radiocarbon method. The chlorophyll method values for the primary production were 49.6% higher than those of the radiocarbon method and 17.7% lower than those of the modified radiocarbon method. |

Water masses are typified according to the intensity of bioluminescence and its structure. The most intensive bioluminescence was observed in equatorial waters, the Brasil Current and in the transformed waters of the Brasil and Folkland Currents as well. In the central part of the anticyclonic circulation, in subtropical waters, in streams of the Folkland Current and in the northern part of the subantarctic water mass bioluminescence is three-five times weaker. The common feature of the bioluminescence distribution over the latitude hydrofront was its increased level in the eastern parts of the adjoining currents. |

86 species of Nematoda are found in the growth of Cystoseira barbata Ag. (Wor.) at depths of 1,3 and 5 m. Only 29 species are common for the three depths. The number of Nematoda in 1970-1971 varied from 800 to 114200 ex./kg of Cystoseira, the amount of biomass ranged form 0.4 to 198.6 mg/kg of the alga. In the spring-summer period their number is at the level of maximum development, in the autumn-winter period it sharply decreases. No clear dependence was found for the changes of the Nematoda number on the depth. The highest number of the Nematoda species was observed in spring and summer. With respect to the species abundance and the number in the Nematoda community the Chtomadorida (27 species) and Enoplida (20 species) orders are prevailing.... |

Distribution of total and specific alkalinity was studied in the south-western region of the Atlantic. It is established that water masses in tjis region are characterized by a wide range of the specific alkalinity values, from 122 peculiar to the Brasil Current, waters to 128-129 corresponding to waters of the subantarctic intermediate water mass with high values of the alkali reserve. |

A new method is described for comparing the toxicity of different substances. A test animal group is led through a series of concentrations of a substance. This allows determination of effective concentrations for each organism and average effective concentration. The latter is criterion of toxicity. The method demands fewer test animals and gives more exact results than other procedures. |

The article deals with new data on energy equivalents of the body mass for some planktonic organisms of the Mediterranean sea and south-western part of the Atlantic ocean. The relation is traced between the energy equivalent of the body weight of the animals and their linear sizes; it is shown that just the latter are determinant for the energy equivalent. |

For the first time acute phenol toxicity is studied for certain of microalgae, some classes of the Black sea invertebrate Crustacea, Polychaeta and Turbellaria (lethal concentration zones and LC - 50 values are determined and external intoxication signs are described). Acute phenol toxicity for certain Black sea fishes is first stated. Specific intoxication pattern is described. Pathological and morphological changes in fishes under phenol effect are studied. The character of specific phenol effect on the fish embryonic development (Pleuronectidae-Rhombus maeoticus) is also stated. The data obtained show high phenol toxicity for sea hydrobionts and the need for a further study of this toxicant effect on various levels of marine biota organization. |

The paper deals with studying the survival for three species inhabiting the cystoseira growths: Mytilaster lineatus (Bivalvia), Rissoa splen (Gastropoda), Idotea baltica (Isopoda), under conditions of a short-time contact with high doses of oil products (100; 75; 50; 25 and 10 ml of oil mixture per 1l of water), as well as with the survival for the same species and Apherusa bispinosa (Amphipoda) and intensity of nutrition of R. splendida and I. baltica under conditions of long time (above 100 days) effect of oil-containing waste. Relative to oil sensitivity the animals may be arranged as follows: Apherusa bispinosa-> I. baltica-> R. splendida-> M. lineatus. The effect of oil-containing waste is weakened with its dilution sea water. |

The energy balance main elements were studied in mass species of copepods depending on the food kind and temperature. It is shown that most animals of the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean fed on living unicellular algae and phytogenic detritus in comparable amounts. Total diurnal rations decreased from 55.9 to 7.5% with an increase in the energy equivalent of the body mass from 0.062 to 1.5 cal*sample^-1. The value of alga and detritus assimilability was 40-60% on the whole. The relation of the ration and amount of the assimilated food to the copepod body mass for 10-12deg Celcius is described by the equations: C = 0.090*W^0.353, A = 0.040*W^0.383, and for 14-16deg Celcius: C = 0.090*W^0.717, A = 0.026*W^0.419. |

A produção de bovinos no Brasil e, em grande parte, sustentada por pastagens nativas. A produtividade destas pastagens e, por outro lado, geralmente baixa, necessitando-se de pesquisas que desenvolvam tecnologia para seu melhor aproveitamento como fonte de alimento para ruminantes. A baixa produção de bovinos nos trópicos deve-se, em parte, a um subconsumo de matéria seca geralmente de baixa digestibilidade, resultando em baixo consumo de nutrientes digestíveis.
