A comparison of trophic relationships for Ruditapes philippinarum in estuarine and oceanic areas: the use of a growth mode!. Trophic relationships in Ruditapes philippinarum were studied in estuarine and oceanic areas of Marennes-Oleron during 1985 and 1986. Principal components analysis (P.C.A.) was used to reveal the fluctuations of the descriptors from the principal axes. Changes in dry weight were predicted in each area through an allometric growth model and were related to the principal axes derived from the P.C.A. The results of the model were used to compare the growth in each area and to point out the descriptors responsible for the discrepancies, such as autumnal blooms or silt resuspension. Attention was paid to the sampling strategy related to... |

NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) received a petition to list the Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) as either threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The Eastern oyster is an emblematic species in the US coastal states, playing a significant role at various levels: shaping coastal social communities, providing a commercial activity (public fishery & aquaculture) and recreational - amenity benefits, and as a keystone species in highly diverse and sensitive ecosystems (estuaries). This petition is likely the result of concerns regarding the partial collapse of public fisheries in several states as well as from the resulting damages to this species induced by severe hurricanes. A Biological Review Team (BRT)... |

Electronic decision-support tools are now an essential component of government strate gies to battle non-native species, with taxon-specific, paper-based risk analysis schemes often being replaced by taxon-generic tools. This study reports on the development of a decision-support tool for aquatic species, the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), which replaces five taxon-specific toolkits for amphibians, freshwater and marine fish and invertebrates (FISK, MFISK, FI-ISK, MI-ISK, Amph-ISK). Adapted from Pheloung et al.’s. Weed Risk Assessment (WRA), the “-ISK” toolkits were also “self-automated workbooks” in Excel® VisualBasic® architecture of the ’WRA. In creating AS-ISK, we incorporated the conceptual approach (questions and guidance) of... |

Thiis report aims to study the oyster Crwsosrrea gigas growth and production over a 12 years time' s span in the bay of Marennes-DIeron. Results of 12 years of oyster growlh did not show any significant oyster biological productivity decrease, nor trend. ln contrast, annual growth showed a large variability, which will be correlated with environmental conditions. Moreover, annual growth variability was greater than the variability due to site location,. besides the Ronce experimental site. The later, located in the south west part of the bay of Marennes-Dleron, has been the leading oyster growth site since 1989. The annual shell growlh variabiliry was greater than oyster dry meat weight fluctuation . Both 1990 and 1991 years were characterized by the... |

Two oyster species are currently present along the French coasts : the indigenous European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis), and the Pacific cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas), that has been introduced from Japan since the beginning of the 70ies. The flat oyster successively suffered from two protozoan diseases during the 60ies and its production decreased from 20 000 tons/year by that time to 1 500 tons/year nowadays. Consequently, the oyster production is principally (99%) based upon the Pacific oyster species with approximately 150 000 tons/year among which 90% are grown from the natural spat. However, the hatchery production of this species is developing and was estimated to 400 to 800 millions spat in 2002. Moreover, strengthened relationships between... |

For a few years, we have witnessed the rapid development of Japanese clam Ruditapes philippinarum (Adams & Reeve) culture on the Atlantic coast, and especially in the Charente Maritime region. However, a number of unknown variables still exist in order to optimize oyster farms and improve their benefits. In this respect, studies have been carried out since 1975 by the Centre Océanologique de Bretagne in Tudy Island, in the Kermoor pond, in order to determine: the consequence of the immersion size on their growth, the optimal seeding period, and the survival rate. Moreover, other studies aimed to significantly reduce the production cost, focused on pre-growth length. These studies correspond to a specific environment (i.e. the semi-closed Kermoor pond).... |

This study presents the zootechnical performances in their natural habitat, the Marennes Oléron Bay, of two Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata taxons of European and Asian origin, as well as those of their "European" hybrids (6 studied strains). Growth performance seems to be a phenotypic characterisation linked with the maternal origin (c. gigas or C. angulata). The Asian "pure gigas" or "pure angulata" strains' growth performances differ more from those of their European "sisters" than the European taxons with their hybrids. The C. angulata strain, of Taiwanese origin, does not survive the second culture week in the Marennes Oléron Bay. The C. angulata strain seems to "carry" a strong mortality potential. After 6 months of off-bottom culture, the... |

An hydrobiological monitoring survey has been carried out in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron since 1977. Five stations, distributed over the Bay, were sam pied twice a month. Spatial and temporal trends of the physical characteristics (i.e., seawater, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and suspended matter), nutrients (azote, nitrite, nitrate, silicate) and organic variables (chlorophyll a and pheopigments) were assessed by using a statistical time-series analysis mode\. It was used to distinguish seasonal variability from long term trends. Pluviometric data as weil as the Charente River fluxes were similary analyzed by the model. The seasonal variability showed an homogeneous pattern over the five stations for all parameters, but the site-dependent... |

Oyster production has historically taken place in intertidal zones, and shellfish farms already occupy large extents of the French intertidal space. The expansion of French shellfish aquaculture within intertidal areas is therefore spatially limited, and moving production to the subtidal offshore environment is considered to be a possible solution to this problem. Finding new sites along the French Atlantic coast was studied here from the perspective of small oyster companies run by young farmers, who are interested in offshore bivalve aquaculture expansion compatible with their investment capacity. In assessing the feasibility of such offshore production, we considered three main issues: (1) bivalve growth potential and (2) technical feasibility and... |

Species invasion is considered as a main factor impacting the marine biodiversity (CBD, 2008). A comprehensive review of species invasion along the French Atlantic coastline is carried out to assess the present status and side effects resulting from those invasions. Vectors of introduction concerning voluntarily and involuntarily, legal & illegal case studies are reviewed to provide baseline information relating invasion success and potential control. Historical case studies regarding shellfish aquaculture-fisheries development and impacts of exotic diseases (e.g., Bonamia ostreae) as well as hitchhikers (e.g., Rapana venosa) are discussed. Among at least 150 reported exotic species, around 10 species have highly significant side-effects on the... |

The Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas, Thunberg, 1793) is one of 20 species in the genus Crassostrea. Although native to the Japan/Korea region, C. gigas is a hardy species that has been introduced to a number of countries worldwide, including the US, Canada, the UK, France, Korea, China, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and South America, mainly for aquaculture purposes (Mann et al., 1991; Orensanz et al., 2002). As a result, C. gigas has become the leading species in world shellfish culture, with an estimated production of 4.6 million t in 2006 (FAO, 2008). Because C. gigas does not require additional food to sustain its growth, this species is relatively inexpensive and easy to produce. Its capacity to adapt to various environmental conditions and... |

In 1972, France underwent an oyster (Crassostrea angulata) crisis and urgently needed to diversify its aquaculture. Thus, Asari clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) was introduced at that time for aquaculture purpose, concomitantly with the introduction of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas). All Asari clam adults and spat originated from the same area (Puget Sound, WA, USA). After a promising start and the implementation of a national Research & Development program, Asari clam culture rapidly faced a series of concomitant handicaps: firstly, in spite the fact that cultural practices were optimized and locking points addressed, leasing ground availability was limited during the 1980s’ due to certain reluctance from oyster farmers to share their leases and/or... |
