Fish populations show complex life cycles with successive dependent life stages, the spatio-temporal patterns of distribution at one stage impacting distribution, growth and mortality during the next stage. Here we propose to assess the relative effect of spawning (timing, duration, fecundity and spatial distribution, resulting from adult environmental conditions over autumn and winter) and larval mortality on the resulting survival at the age of metamorphosis. We used a suite of models run sequentially: a coupled physical-biogeochemical model to provide the environmental forcing, a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model for adult fish growth and reproduction (spawning timing, duration and fecundity), an Individual Based Model (IBM) for larval drift, growth and... |

The Pélagiques Gascogne (PELGAS) integrated survey has been developed by a multidisciplinary team of Ifremer and La Rochelle University scientists since 2000, joined by commercial fishermen in 2007. Its initial focus was to assess the biomass and predict the recruitment success of anchovy in the Bay of Biscay in spring. Taking advantage of the space and versatility of R/V Thalassa II, sampling has been progressively extended to other ecosystem components. PELGAS therefore further developed the second objective of monitoring and studying the dynamic and diverse Biscay pelagic ecosystem in springtime. The PELGAS survey model has allowed for the establishment of a long-term time-series of spatially-explicit data of the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem since... |

The course in Fontainebleau was a great experience which provided helpful technical support for my work on the variation of spatial distributions of fish and increased my repertoire of methods. In particular, I am now able to deal with a huge amount of trawl survey station data, analyse the structure in their spatial and temporal variability, and derive maps from sample datapoints. In addition, I also see how useful it can be for other hot topics such as plastics in the ocean or impacts of oil rigs, especially during a time when environmental issues receive increasing public attention. During the course, I was also able to socialize and meet a variety of interesting, smart, and friendly scientists from all over the world. Courses such as the one in... |

Quantitative analysis of the spatial patterns in age-structured fish populations provides a useful complement to stock assessment methods. The spatial distribution of an age-structured population is characterized by indicators for location, dispersion and aggregation, which are estimated from survey data. The times series of spatial indicators are organised in a 3D data structure with dimensions along indicators, age classes and years. Multi factor analysis (MFA) is applied to quantify the reproducibility in time of the multivariate structure between age classes and indicators. MFA computes the mean annual pattern over the age classes. The deviation around that pattern in each year is also quantified. A multivariate indicator that characterise the spatial... |
