Development and Application of the GIS-Based Water Mass Analysis Integrated System. OceanDocs
Zhang, Yuexia; MIao, Zhenqing; Yan, Shiqiang.
The research on water masses is always one important facet of Oceanography. I adopt the method of Fuzzy Density Clustering to analyse water masses. Meanwhile, I use Visual Basic 6.0 as developing platform and utilize the MapX components to develop the platform of GIS. By integrating the Water Masses Model compiled by FORTRAN language, and GIS using Tight Coupling, I develop an Integrated System. That makes all phases are finished in one condition, including the gain of computing grid, the pick-up and analysis of data, the choice of parameters and resetting, the computing of model, and the result’s visualization. It improves the efficiency of the data analysis and decision-making. Finally, this system is applied in the Zhoushan fishing ground and adjacent...

Litovsky, A..

Osorno Arango, A.; Díaz Merlano, J.M..
Exploitation, uses and current status of the West Indian topshell Cittarium pica (Mollusca: Gastropoda, Trochidae) along the Colombian Caribbean coast. The West Indian topshell, Cittarium pica is a common and conspicuous gastropod that thrives in Caribbean intertidal rocky shores and has been used for food by men since pre-Columbian times. Although, the exploitation of this resource is practiced only by artisanal fishermen and mainly for self-consumption, its abundance has noticeably reduced in the last ten years, so the species has been included in the endangered animal lists of several Caribbean countries, including Colombia. The present study was carried out to assess the current status of the population of C. pica along the Colombian Caribbean mainland...

Garcés, Y.; Betanzos, A..

Net fishing and its management in Seychelles OceanDocs
Payet, R.J..
Net fishing is an important component of the artisanal fishery of the Seychelles. It is composed of beach seine, encircling and set gillnets. This report reviews net fishery and its impact on the environment and fish stocks and provides a framework for its management. There are no current management measures for the traditional net fisheries except that all nets above 50 metres requires a license with a lead seal bearing the licence number. Certain irresponsible uses of these nets have ben acknowledged, principally the 'Met outaz' fishing strategy, incidental catch of marine mammals and the presence of commercially important juvenile fish in the beach seine fishery. SFA has addresses these issues rationally and management options are explored followed by...

Culturing Coral for Management OceanDocs
Franklin, H.; Muhando, C. A..
Anthropogenic pressures on the coral reefs of Tanzania are high. Over-exploitation, destructive fishing practices, unplanned tourism and high sedimentation load are amongst the most evident contributing factors whilst the poor economy and increased human population density along the coast is an underlying problem. There is a clear need for alternative sources of livelihood and effective ways to manage coral reef resources sustainably. Mariculture is becoming a common component in coastal zone management in Tanzania.

Environmental Pollution In The Nigeria Coastal Waters; A Case Study Of The Lagos Lagoon OceanDocs
Adekanbi, E.O.; Okoye, B.C.O.; Ajao, E.A..
The state of pollution in the Lagos lagoon was examined by a field survey of twenty-six sites (stations) in the dry and wet season in 1985. Some selected sites were further re-examined in the same period in 1986. The sediment trace metals and total hydrocarbons were analysed. The relationship between non residual and residual trace elements was examined. For both years of study, total trace metal levels (mg/kg) fell in the ranges: Cu,1.9 – 132.4, Cr, 2.9 – 167; 7.8 – 830. 6; Ph, 1.6 – 483.1 and Cd, 0.04 – 15.5. Total hydrocarbon concentrations in 1985 ranged from 0.25 to 2766.27 mg/g with high concentrations in muddy and sandy sediments. The results show marked variations and non – uniform distribution from one season to another. With few exceptions,...

Community Structure and Productivity of Mangroves at Nabq, Red Sea OceanDocs
McCallum, J.N.; Paterson, L.; Greenwood, M.F.D..
Tree and pneumatophore height and density of Avicennia marina were measured along a point -intersection/band transect at Nabq, Red Sea, to establish possible zonation patterns amongst these mangrove characteristics. There was a significant increase in pneumatophore height and density landwards to seawards. Tree density decreased significantly down the transect. Graphical analysis showed an increase in tree height followed by a decrease at the seaward edge. Investigation of a theoretical increase in productivity (biomass) down the shore by leaf index calculation (leaf index = average leaf area x number of leaves per station) was inconclusive from data obtained.

Alcolado Prieto, P.; Caballero Aragón, H.; Alcolado, P. M.; Lopeztegui Castillo, A..
The effect of pollution on coral recruitment has been insufficiently studied. This research deals with coral recruitment in coastal areas and aimed to determine the variations of density and dominant species of corals recruits in sites at different distances from pollution sources. The composition and structure of stony coral (scleractinian and milleporids) recruit associations were characterized in the fringing reef of Western Havana, Cuba. This reef is influenced by urban pollution from the Almendares River and a sewage outlet located at its mouth. Four sites were sampled on the upper fore reef escarpment at 10m deep every three months between July 2007 and May 2008. A 25cm side quadrat was used to determine the density and taxonomic composition of...
