Allosteric regulation of 6-phosphofructo-1-kinase activity of fat body and flight muscle from the bloodsucking bug Rhodnius prolixus Anais da ABC (AABC)
Alves,Gutemberg G.; Marinho-Carvalho,Monica M.; Atella,Georgia C.; Silva-Neto,Mario A.C.; Sola-Penna,Mauro.
6-phosphofructo-1-kinase (phosphofructokinase; PFK) activity from Rhodnius prolixus, a haematophagous insect which is usually a poor flyer, was measured and compared in two metabolically active tissues - flight muscle and fat body. The activity of this important regulatory glycolytic enzyme was much more pronounced in muscle (15.1 ± 1.4 U/mg) than in fat body extracts (3.6±0.4 U/mg), although the latter presented higher levels of enzyme per protein content, as measured by western-blotting. Muscle extracts are more responsible than fat body to ATP and fructose 6-phosphate, both substrates of PFK. Allosteric regulation exerted by different effectors such as ADP, AMP and fructose 2,6-phosphate presented a singular pattern for each tissue. Optimal pH (8.0-8.5)...

Reproductive biology of a bromeligenous frog endemic to the Atlantic Forest: Aparasphenodon arapapa Pimenta, Napoli and Haddad, 2009 (Anura: Hylidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
LANTYER-SILVA,AMANDA S.F.; SOLÉ,MIRCO; ZINA,JULIANA.
The genus Aparasphenodon is restricted to South America and comprises five poorly studied species which present a straight relationship with bromeliads. Herein we present the reproductive biology of the species Aparasphenodon arapapa. Our observations indicate that A. arapapa is a prolonged breeder, reproducing throughout the year using bromeliads as a calling and breeding site. The tadpoles complete their development inside those plants. Males, females and juveniles may also use the bromeliads as a shelter. We also describe the courtship behavior and the parental care of the species with an evidence of temporary fidelity between male and female and propose a new reproductive mode.

Importance of CD8 T cell-mediated immune response during intracellular parasitic infections and its implications for the development of effective vaccines Anais da ABC (AABC)
Rodrigues,Mauricio M.; Boscardin,Silvia B.; Vasconcelos,José R.; Hiyane,Meire I.; Salay,Gerson; Soares,Irene S..
Obligatory intracellular parasites such as Plasmodium sp, Trypanosoma cruzi, Toxoplasma gondii and Leishmania sp are responsible for the infection of hundreds of millions of individuals every year. These parasites can deliver antigens to the host cell cytoplasm that are presented through MHC class I molecules to protective CD8 T cells. The in vivo priming conditions of specific CD8 T cells during natural infection are largely unknown and remain as an area that has been poorly explored. The antiparasitic mechanisms mediated by CD8 T cells include both interferon-g-dependent and -independent pathways. The fact that CD8 T cells are potent inhibitors of parasitic development prompted many investigators to explore whether induction of these T cells can be a...

Food restriction beginning at lactation interferes with the cellular dynamics of the mucosa and colonic myenteric innervation in adult rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
SCHOFFEN,JOÃO PAULO F.; VICENTINI,FERNANDO A.; MARCELINO,CAROLINA G.; ARAÚJO,EDUARDO J.A.; PEDROSA,MARIA M.D.; NATALI,MARIA R.M..
The effects of food restriction (FR) on the morphoquantitative aspects of the wall and myenteric neurons of the proximal colon in adult rats were analysed. FR was imposed by duplication of the experimental brood size in relation to the control brood during lactation. The FR group received a 50% reduction of food from weaning until 90 days of age. Samples of the colon underwent histological processing to morphometrically analyze the crypts, muscularis mucosae, tunica mucosa, and muscularis externa. We determined the number of goblet cells and serotoninergic enteroendocrine cells, and morphoquantitatively studied the myenteric neuronal population. FR caused hypertrophy in the tunica mucosa, increase in crypt depth and in the muscular layer of the mucosa, a...

A new Cretaceous terrestrial ecosystem from Gondwana with the description of a new sauropod dinosaur Anais da ABC (AABC)
Calvo,Jorge O.; Porfiri,Juan D.; González-Riga,Bernardo J.; Kellner,Alexander W.A..
A unique site at the northern area of Patagonia (Neuquén, Argentina) reveals a terrestrial ecosystem preserved in a detail never reported before in a Late Cretaceous deposit. An extraordinary diversity and abundance of fossils was found concentrated in a 0.5 m horizon in the same quarry, including a new titanosaur sauropod, Futalognkosaurus dukei n.gen., n.sp, which is the most complete giant dinosaur known so far. Several plant leaves, showing a predominance of angiosperms over gymnosperms that likely constituted the diet of F. dukei were found too. Other dinosaurs (sauropods, theropods, ornithopods), crocodylomorphs, pterosaurs, and fishes were also discovered, allowing a partial reconstruction of this Gondwanan continental ecosystem.

Disaggregases, molecular chaperones that resolubilize protein aggregates Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mokry,David Z.; Abrahão,Josielle; Ramos,Carlos H.I..
The process of folding is a seminal event in the life of a protein, as it is essential for proper protein function and therefore cell physiology. Inappropriate folding, or misfolding, can not only lead to loss of function, but also to the formation of protein aggregates, an insoluble association of polypeptides that harm cell physiology, either by themselves or in the process of formation. Several biological processes have evolved to prevent and eliminate the existence of non-functional and amyloidogenic aggregates, as they are associated with several human pathologies. Molecular chaperones and heat shock proteins are specialized in controlling the quality of the proteins in the cell, specifically by aiding proper folding, and dissolution and clearance of...

Science communication podcasting in Brazil: the potential and challenges depicted by two podcasts Anais da ABC (AABC)
DANTAS-QUEIROZ,MARCOS V.; WENTZEL,LIA C.P.; QUEIROZ,LUCIANO L..
ABSTRACT Podcasts - online distributed audio files - are easy access and production media, which can be used for Scientific Communication (SC) but few are presented in Portuguese. The objective of this work is to perform a case study with data from a survey for two Brazilian SC podcasts (Dragões de Garagem and Fronteiras da Ciência) to evaluate the increase of science podcast media in Brazil, the involved potential, their advantages, shortcomings, and perspectives. We noted an increase of listeners over the years, probably due to the internet popularization and the massive increase of mobile phones. Scientific content is underexplored, despite the great interest of the public. Humorous and informal podcasts are the most appealing to the public and they...

Surface charges and interfaces: implications for mineral roles in prebiotic chemistry Anais da ABC (AABC)
PONTES-BUARQUE,MILA; TESSIS,ANA C.; BONAPACE,JOSÉ A. P.; MONTE,MARISA B. M.; SOUZA-BARROS,FERNANDO DE; VIEYRA,ADALBERTO.
There exists an extensive literature on the possible roles of minerals in the prebiotic stages of the chemical evolution of life (Bernal 1951, Cairns-Smith 1982, Wächtershäuser 1992, Vieyra et al. 1995, Tessis et al. 1999, see Lahav (1994) for a review). Among the original proposals, minerals have been considered in: (a) processes that would discriminate molecular chirality; (b) condensation reactions of biomolecular precursors; (c) prebiotic catalysis; (d) biochemical templates; and (e) autocatalytic metabolism. In this communication it is emphazised the complex properties of both surface reactions and interfaces between minerals and aqueous solutions simulating Archean scenarios. The properties of pyrite surface net charge and of its interface with a...

Synthesis of Chiral 1,3-Dienes through Ring-Closing Metathesis of Enantioenriched Enynes: Potential Precursors of Morphane Analogs Anais da ABC (AABC)
GARCIA-MUÑOZ,MARÍA JESÚS; SIRVENT,ANA; FOUBELO,FRANCISCO; YUS,MIGUEL.
ABSTRACT A simple methodology for the synthesis of enynes by indium mediated diastereoselective allylation of aromatic N-tert-butanesulfinylimines bearing alkenyl groups at ortho-position with allyl bromide has been developed. The addition of the allyl indium intermediate to the chiral imine took place with excellent diastereoselectivity. Ruthenium-catalyzed ring-closing metathesis of the resulting enynes provided the expected cyclic 1,3-dienes in good to moderate yields. These chiral dienes are potential precursors of biologically and pharmacologically active morphane derivatives.

Effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound exposure on rats tibia periosteum Anais da ABC (AABC)
Batista,Jaqueline Martins; Nakagaki,Wilson Romero; Soares,Evelise Aline; Camilli,José Angelo.
Abstract The periosteum is a rich source of osteoprogenitor cells and periosteal grafts can be used as an alternative method to replace bone grafts. The low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has often been used as a noninvasive method to stimulate osteogenesis and reduce the fracture healing time. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the ultrasound exposure on the rat tibia periosteum. Group I (7 animals) received LIPUS therapy on the left tibia for 7 days and group II (7 animals) on the left tibia for 14 days. After euthanasia, the tibias were processed. Number of periosteal cells and vessels and thickness of the periosteum were analyzed. The number of periosteal cells was higher in stimulated periosteum compared to controls at 7 and 14...

Screening of melon genotypes for resistance to vegetable leafminer and your phenotypic correlations with colorimetry Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,FREDERICO I.C. DE; FIEGE,LEONARDO B.C.; CELIN,ELAINE F.; INNECCO,RENATO; NUNES,GLAUBER H.S.; ARAGÃO,FERNANDO A.S. DE.
ABSTRACT Melon is one of the most important vegetable crops in the world. With short cycle in a system of phased planting, phytosanitary control is compromised, and a great volume of agricultural chemicals is used to control vegetable leafminer. Genetic control is an ideal alternative to avoid the damage caused by this insect. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate Cucumis accessions in regard to resistance to leafminer and correlate the variables analyzed. Fifty-four accessions and four commercial hybrids of melon were tested. The study was divided into two experiments: with and with no choice. The following characteristics were evaluated: with choice, in field - subjective score based on the infestation and the number of mines per leaf; and with no...

On the geographical differentiation of Gymnodactylus geckoides Spix, 1825 (Sauria, Gekkonidae): speciation in the Brasilian caatingas Anais da ABC (AABC)
Vanzolini,Paulo Emilio.
The specific concept of G. geckoides was initially ascertained based on a topotypical sample from Salvador, Bahia. Geographic differentiation was studied through the analysis of two meristic characters (tubercles in a paramedian row and fourth toe lamellae) and color pattern of 327 specimens from 23 localities. It is shown that the population from the southernmost locality, Mucugê, is markedly divergent in all characters studied. A Holocene refuge model is proposed to explain the pattern. A decision about the rank to be attributed to the Mucugê population is deferred until more detailed sampling is effected and molecular methods are applied.

Corn grain yield and 15N-fertilizer recovery as a function of urea sidedress timing Anais da ABC (AABC)
SCHONINGER,EVANDRO L.; VILLALBA,HUGO A. GONZÁLEZ; BENDASSOLLI,JOSÉ ALBERTINO; TRIVELIN,PAULO CESAR O..
Abstract Best fertilizer management practices such as adopting the right N sidedress timing can reduce N losses by volatilization, thus, raising N-fertilizer recovery and grain yield. To evaluate ammonia (N-NH3 ) losses, N-fertilizer recovery and grain yield as a function of urea sidedress timing in corn, a field study was conducted during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 growing seasons, adopting a complete randomized block design with four replications. Treatments consisted of urea sidedress timing (140 kg N ha-1) at V4, V6, V8, V10, and V12 growth stages, plus a control without sidedress N. The largest N losses by N-NH3 volatilization occurred when urea was applied at V10 or V12 growth stages, reaching losses of 35 and 41 % of the total applied N. Although...

Wave onset in central gray matter - its intrinsic optical signal and phase transitions in extracellular polymers Anais da ABC (AABC)
FERNANDES-DE-LIMA,VERA M.; KOGLER,JOÃO E.; BENNATON,JOCELYN; HANKE,WOLFGANG.
The brain is an excitable media in which excitation waves propagate at several scales of time and space. ''One-dimensional'' action potentials (millisecond scale) along the axon membrane, and spreading depression waves (seconds to minutes) at the three dimensions of the gray matter neuropil (complex of interacting membranes) are examples of excitation waves. In the retina, excitation waves have a prominent intrinsic optical signal (IOS). This optical signal is created by light scatter and has different components at the red and blue end of the spectrum. We could observe the wave onset in the retina, and measure the optical changes at the critical transition from quiescence to propagating wave. The results demonstrated the presence of fluctuations preceding...

ABSTRACT The study of radiation entrance and exit dynamics and energy consumption in a system is important for understanding the environmental processes that rule the biosphere-atmosphere interactions of all ecosystems. This study provides an analysis of the interaction of energy in the form of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the Pantanal, a Brazilian wetland forest, by studying the variation of PAR reflectance and its interaction with local rainfall. The study site is located in Private Reserve of Natural Heritage, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, where the vegetation is a monodominant forest of Vochysia divergens Phol. The results showed a high correlation between the reflection of visible radiation and rainfall; however, the behavior was not the...

Paleoproterozoic (~1.88Ga) felsic volcanism of the Iricoumé Group in the Pitinga Mining District area, Amazonian Craton, Brazil: insights in ancient volcanic processes from field and petrologic data Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pierosan,Ronaldo; Lima,Evandro F.; Nardi,Lauro V.S.; Campos,Cristina P. de; Bastos Neto,Artur C.; Ferron,José M.T.M.; Prado,Maurício.
The Iricoumé Group correspond to the most expressive Paleoproterozoic volcanism in the Guyana Shield, Amazonian craton. The volcanics are coeval with Mapuera granitoids, and belong to the Uatumã magmatism. They have U-Pb ages around 1880 Ma, and geochemical signatures of α-type magmas. Iricoumé volcanics consist of porphyritic trachyte to rhyolite, associated to crystal-rich ignimbrites and co-ignimbritic fall tuffs and surges. The amount and morphology of phenocrysts can be useful to distinguish lava (flow and dome) from hypabyssal units. The morphology of ignimbrite crystals allows the distinction between effusive units and ignimbrite, when pyroclasts are obliterated. Co-ignimbritic tuffs are massive, and some show stratifications that suggest deposition...
