Toxic effects of leachates from plastic pearl-farming gear on embryo-larval development in the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Gardon, Tony; Huvet, Arnaud; Paul-pont, Ika; Cassone, Anne-laure; Koua, Manaarii Sham; Soyez, Claude; Jezequel, Ronan; Receveur, Justine; Le Moullac, Gilles.
Pearl-farming leads to significant plastic pollution in French Polynesia (FP) as the end of life of most farming gear is currently poorly managed. Plastic debris released into the aquatic environment accumulates, with potentially detrimental effects on the lagoon ecosystem and pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, a species of ecological, commercial and social value. Here, we tested the effects of leachates from new (N) and aged (A) plastic pearl-farming gear (spat collector and synthetic rope) obtained after 24 h and 120 h incubation, on the embryo-larval development of the pearl oyster using an in-vitro assay. Embryos were exposed for 24 h and 48 h to a negative control (0) and the leachate from 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 g of plastic. L−1. After 24 h exposure to...

Deep-sea benthic communities in the largest oceanic desert are structured by the presence of polymetallic crust ArchiMer
Delavenne, Juliette; Keszler, Louise; Castelin, Magalie; Lozouet, Pierre; Maestrati, Philippe; Samadi, Sarah.
Based on the specimens collected during three deep-sea cruises, and deposited at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (MNHN) in Paris, we analysed the diversity of benthic communities within the EEZ of French Polynesia. The literature and the MNHN database allowed us to inventory 471 species of invertebrates, among which 169 were newly described. We mainly found data for Mollusca, Crustacea, Brachiopoda and Crinoidea. We also found samples from other taxa, which still remain unidentified within the collections of the MNHN. Although this inventory is incomplete, we demonstrate that the deep waters of French Polynesia host unique benthic communities and endemic species. Using diversity and multivariate analyses, we show that the deep-sea benthic...

Cable length optimization for trawl fuel consumption reduction ArchiMer
Khaled, Ramez; Priour, Daniel; Billard, Jean-yves.
A numerical method for optimization of the cable lengths in trawls with respect to the ratio between the estimated trawl drag and the predicted catch efficiency is developed and applied. The trawl cables of interest are warps, bridles, headline and footrope. The optimization algorithm applies an ordered sequential process changing one cable length at the time. It is assumed in the predictions that the catch efficiency of the trawl is proportional with the trawl mouth area. In a case study optimizing a bottom trawl used on a research vessel by applying the new method it is predicted that it would be possible to reduce the ratio between trawl drag and catch efficiency by up to 46% by optimizing the cable lengths. Thus this would enable a considerable...

The importance of turbulent kinetic energy on transport of juvenile clams (Mya arenaria) ArchiMer
Redjah, I.; Olivier, Frederic; Tremblay, R.; Myrand, B.; Pernet, Fabrice; Neumeier, U.; Chevarie, L..
Soft-shell clam, Mya arenaria, culture on the east coast of Canada is characterized by high loss following seeding. To evaluate the importance of passive transport due to currents, an experimental flume study was designed. The purpose was to measure the effects of hydrodynamic conditions, substrate, and clam size on dispersal in controlled laboratory condition and to interpret these results in relation to field measurements. Unidirectional currents with gradual increasing velocities (0 to 60 cm s(-1)) were applied to three substrates (muddy sand, medium sand, and coarse sand) in which clams from one of three size classes (10, 15, and 20 mm) had burrowed. We also examined the resulting effects of turbulent kinetic energy on the erosion of medium-grain sand...

Distribution, encounter rates, and habitat characteristics of toothed cetaceans in the Bay of Biscay and adjacent waters from platform-of-opportunity data ArchiMer
Kiszka, Jeremy; Macleod, Kelly; Van Canneyt, Olivier; Walker, Dylan; Ridoux, Vincent.
Data on the distribution and habitat utilization of oceanic marine mammals are difficult to collect and yet such information is beneficial for many conservation and management purposes. Data collected during ferry-based cetacean surveys in the English Channel and Bay of Biscay between 1998 and 2002 were analysed to investigate the distribution, encounter rate, and habitat characteristics of toothed cetaceans there. In all, 17 873 nautical miles were surveyed, and 1008 encounters of 13 identified species, including delphinids, ziphiids, harbour porpoise, and sperm whale, were recorded. The common dolphin was the commonest species, followed in decreasing occurrence by striped and bottlenose dolphins, pilot whale, harbour porpoise, Cuvier's beaked whale, and...

Bacterial inactivation using pulsed light ArchiMer
Elmnasser, Noura; Ritz, Magali; Leroi, Francoise; Orange, Nicole; Bakhrouf, Amina; Federighi, Michel.
Pulsed light is a new method intended for the decontamination of food surfaces using short, high frequency pulses of an intense broad spectrum. The effects of broad spectrum pulsed light on the survival of Listeria monocytogenes Scott A, Listeria monocytogenes CNL, Pseudomonas fluorescens MF37 and Photobacterium phosphoreum SF680 populations on agar and in a liquid medium were investigated during this study. The sterilisation system generated 1.5 J cm(-2) per pulse with eight lamps for 300 mu s. In the case of surface-seeded cells, a 7.8, 8.14 and > 7.14 log reduction was obtained for L. monocytogenes, Ps. fluorescens MF37 and Ph. phosphoreum, respectively, after a single pulse of treatment. Inactivation levels were...

Biogeochemistry of organic-rich coastal lagoon sediments ArchiMer
Martens, C S.
Geochemical processes in organic-rich lagoon sediments are dominated by the influence of microbially mediated degradation of recently deposited organic matter. A detailed study of chemical distributions and transport processes in a small coastal lagoon, Cape Lookout Bight, North Carolina (USA), reveals that degradation of the metabolizable fraction of the total organic matter not only controls interstitial water chemical composition, but drives the recycling of mobile degradation and products to overlying waters and the troposphere.

Factors influencing disease-induced mortality of Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Petton, Bruno; Boudry, Pierre; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Pernet, Fabrice.
Mortalities of oyster Crassostrea gigas seed associated with ostreid herpesvirus OsHV-1 μVar have been observed in many oyster-producing countries since 2008. The present study, comprised of 4 complementary experiments, aimed to identify factors associated with disease-induced oyster mortality in order to propose mitigation strategies. Our first experiment compared survival of oysters from natural spatfall with others sampled from nurseries, after thermal elevation in the laboratory from <14 to 21°C. A total of 60% of the tested wild seed batches (n = 51) were infected by OsHV-1, exhibited mortality and were able to transmit the disease to cohabited naïve oysters. Comparatively, only 1 out of the 32 tested batches sampled from nurseries presented...

Les polychlorobiphenyles ( PCB ) en Baie de Seine ArchiMer
Abarnou, Alain.
PCB contamination and i ts relationship wi th suspended particulate matter (SPM) have been studied in water from the Seine estuary and the baie de Seine, in July 1985 and February 1986. PCB chromatograms are very similar and characterize a chronic contamination. PCB concentrations vary from 2 ng/l in the marine zone up to 210 ng/l in the estuary. SPM and PCB concentrations are weIl correlated. Highest PCB concentrations are measured in February due to higher SPM inputs mainly made of finer particles.

Reference points for predators will progress ecosystem‐based management of fisheries ArchiMer

Ecosystem‐based management of fisheries aims to allow sustainable use of fished stocks while keeping impacts upon ecosystems within safe ecological limits. Both the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets promote these aims. We evaluate implementation of ecosystem‐based management in six case‐study fisheries in which potential indirect impacts upon bird or mammal predators of fished stocks are well publicized and well studied. In particular, we consider the components needed to enable management strategies to respond to information from predator monitoring. Although such information is available in all case‐studies, only one has a reference point defining safe ecological limits for predators and none has a method to...

Fish, fishers, seals and tourists: Economic consequences of creating a marine reserve in a multi-species, multi-activity context ArchiMer
Boncoeur, Jean; Alban, Frederique; Guyader, Olivier; Thebaud, Olivier.
This paper investigates some economic consequences of creating a marine reserve on both fishing and ecotourism, when the range of controllability of fishing effort is limited and the impact of the reserve on ecosystem is considered. The issue is illustrated by the example of creating a no-take zone in part of a region where fishing is managed through a limited entry license system, and which is inhabited by two interacting stocks: a stock of prey (fish) and a stock of predators (seals). While the former is targeted by commercial fishing, the latter is not subject to harvest but is a potential basis for a commercial non-extractive activity (seal watching). Analysis is conducted with the help of a bioeconomic model combining the features of marine reserve...

Assessment of C, N and Si isotopes as tracers of past ocean nutrient and carbon cycling ArchiMer
Farmer, Jesse; Hertzberg, Jennifer; Cardinal, Damien; Fietz, Susanne; Hendry, Katharine; Jaccard, Sam; Paytan, Adina; Rafter, Patrick; Ren, Haojia; Somes, Christopher; Sutton, Jill; Geotraces Pages Biological Productivity Working Group Members,.
Biological productivity in the ocean directly influences the partitioning of carbon between the atmosphere and ocean interior, thereby controlling the distributions of many elements and their isotopes in the ocean. Through this carbon cycle feedback, changing ocean productivity has long been hypothesized as a key pathway for modulating past atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and hence global climate. To reconstruct climate impacts from temporal changes in paleoproductivity, robust proxies are needed to test the connection between past ocean productivity, nutrient biogeochemistry, ocean circulation and climate. Here we compile water column carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and silicon (Si) stable isotopes from GEOTRACES-era data in four key ocean regions to review...
