Recent brachiopods collected by CANCAP expeditions to the south-east North Atlantic between 1976 and 1978 are identified. Species belonging to Pelagodiscus, Gryphus? Dyscolia, Terebratulina, Eucalathis, Argyrotheca, Megathiris, Platidia, Phaneropora, Megerlia, Dallina, Macandrevia and Lacazella have been recognised, including a new species Argyrotheca grandicostata. Comparisons are made to show the close relationships of these Mauritanian brachiopods to recently-described brachiopod faunas from the Gulf of Gascogne (Lusitanian) and the Mediterranean Sea. |

Benthic suspension feeders are abundant in littoral and shallow sub-littoral ecosystems, where they feed on the plankton and on organic matter suspended in the water column. Recent studies indicate that active suspension feeders with powerful water filtration mechanisms (e.g., bivalve molluscs) may exert an important influence on the abundance and production of phytoplankton, and probably zooplankton as well. Passive suspension feeders, such as hydrozoans, have received less attention, and their effect on shallow planktonic communities is poorly understood. This paper presents evidence that hydrozoans, which make only a minor contribution to benthic community biomass, capture large amounts of zooplankton and seston, and that they may play an important role... |

Open ocean zooplankton often have been viewed as slowly evolving species that have limited capacity to respond adaptively to changing ocean conditions. Hence, attention has focused on the ecological responses of zooplankton to current global change, including range shifts and changing phenology. Here, we argue that zooplankton also are well poised for evolutionary responses to global change. We present theoretical arguments that suggest plankton species may respond rapidly to selection on mildly beneficial mutations due to exceptionally large population size, and consider the circumstantial evidence that supports our inference that selection may be particularly important for these species. We also review all primary population genetic studies of open ocean... |

In the course of 1944, whilst engaged with the revision of the collections of Hydroids in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden and the Zoological Museum at Amsterdam, I had the opportunity to study a considerable number of Hydroids from the tropical and subtropical parts of the three large oceans. No report has up to the present time been published on these Hydroids, although many specimens are of considerable interest. The present paper contains the results of the study of these samples, which were kindly put at my disposal by Prof. Dr. H. Boschma and Prof. Dr. L. F. de Beaufort. I also wish the express my sincere thanks to Mrs. W. S. S. van der Feen née van Benthem Jutting and Miss Dr. Jos. Th. Koster for their assistance in providing me... |

The collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden and the Zoologisch Museum of Amsterdam contain 19 species of Porifera (15 marine and 4 freshwater species) originating from the Netherlands. Among the marine species, Halichondria panicea (Pallas, 1766), Halichondria bowerbanki Burton, 1930, Haliclona oculala (Pallas, 1766), Cliona celata (Grant, 1826), Scypha ciliata (Fabricius, 1780) (two forms) and Leucosolenia botryoides (Ellis & Solander, 1786) (two forms) appeared to be most common. Rare or moderately rare species proved to be Ficulina ficus (Linnaeus, 1767), Prosuberites epiphytum (Lamarck, 1816), Mycale contareni (von Martens, 1824) and Haliclona loosanoffi Hartman, 1958. A new species of a very thinly encrusting Desmacella (Porifera, Demospongiae, Poecilosclerida, Desmacellidae) is described from Queen Charlotte Basin and Georgia Basin, off the Canadian Pacific coast. It is compared with all known species of the genus, differing in the geometry and size of spicules, and the persistent epizoic growth. |

The study of neospiriferine and spiriferidine brachiopods from the Permian of Timor (Indonesia) present in the collections of the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum (National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, The Netherlands) resulted in a revision of the species Spirifer timorensis Martin, 1881 and Crassispirifer broilii Waterhouse, 2004 and the description of a new species, Latispirifer archboldorum sp. nov. Also, a new genus, Archboldiella, is created, based on the aberrant species Spirifer basleoensis Hayasaka & Hosono, 1951. |

In this paper I will try to solve the controversial points still existing in respect to the species Alcyonium palmatum Pallas, Alcyonium acaule Marion and Alcyonium brioniense Kükenthal. I found that A. brioniense has to be regarded a synonym of A. acaule, and that A. palmatum adriaticum Kükenthal, 1907, ( = A. adriaticum of Kükenthal, 1909) can neither be considered a geographical race nor a valid species. I wish to express my sincere thanks to Dr. L. D. Brongersma, director, and Drs. W. Vervoort and L. B. Holthuis, curators, of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden, to Prof. Dr. H. Engel, director, and Dr. J. H. Stock, curator, of the Zoölogisch Museum at Amsterdam, for placing material of their respective museums at my disposal and for... |

In this paper we describe Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. (Porifera: Demospongiae: Hadromerida: Suberitidae) from four enclosed anchialine lakes located in Indonesia and from a confined system in Singapore. Initially this species was thought to be specific to anchialine lakes, but further comparison to coastal areas indicated that it is more widespread in inshore systems. We have used morphological characters to distinguish this species and a molecular marker to confirm that all types are the same species. Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. is encrusting or massive with small protrusions or larger globular branches. The external colour can be olive-green, blue, purple, red-orange, or orange-yellow. Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. differs from known... |

In the first months of 1941, whilst engaged with the study of Hydroids occurring along the coasts of the Netherlands, I received a small collection of Hydroids from Jersey for identification. These Hydroids, which were kindly sent to me by Mrs. W. S. S. van der Feen née van Benthem Jutting, curator at the Zoölogisch Museum at Amsterdam, had been collected by the late Mr. R. Oppenheim, a very studious amateur-naturalist, during a prolonged stay at Jersey from 1914-1918. Before his death Mr. Oppenheim placed a large number of fine drawings of Hydroids at my disposal, which were made during his stay at Jersey, where he had ample time and opportunities to study an extensive number of living Hydroids. Both drawings and Hydroids are now in the collections of the... |

Bunodes biscayensis Fischer, 1874, a species of Actiniaria described from Moulleau, Arcachon, south-western coast of France, and never recorded since, was rediscovered in July 1985 and found again in 1986 and 1987 in several localities along the French "Côte Basque" between the mouth of the river Adour and St. Jean-de-Luz. The species is here redescribed and referred to Bunodosoma Verrill, 1899, a genus of tropical and subtropical Atlantic and West-American intertidal and shallow water forms, hitherto not recorded from the Mediterranean and/or the Atlantic coast of Europe. Speculations are advanced as to the possible further distribution of B. biscayensis. A discussion is added concerning the morphological terms verruca and vesicle. The study is completed... |
