In Notes on Gobioid Fishes 6, Zool. Meded. XVIII, 1935, p. 121—150. I gave some synonyms. After a study of the collection of Gobioid fishes in the British Museum (Natural History) in June 1935, I found some new synonyms, which I give below. I am much obliged to Mr. J. R. Norman, Assistant Keeper of Zoology, for his kind help during my study. Bathygobius fuscus (Rüpp.) To the synonyms given on p. 121—122 in Zool. Meded. XVIII, 1935 I add: Gobius elegans var. Cantor, Cat. Mal. Fishes, Journ. As. Soc. Bengal XVIII, (1849) 1850, p. 1161. Gobius elegans Günther, Cat. Fishes III, 1861, p. 18 (not of C. & V.). Gobius graeffii Günther, Fische der Südsee VI, Journ. Mus. Godeffroy XIII, 1877, p. 179. As I stated (1.c., p. 138), Gobius elegans var. of Cantor,... |

Ray-finned fishes are a diverse, but understudied, component of the Maastrichtian marine fauna of the southeast Netherlands (Limburg) and northeast Belgium (Liège-Limburg). The most extensive reviews of fishes from these uppermost Cretaceous deposits were made in the early and mid-Twentieth Century, but little research on this important assemblage has been executed since. The present paper provides figures and brief descriptions of fishes from the Maastrichtian type area as an aid for field identification of fossil discoveries. A simple key to common Maastrichtian fish teeth from this area is also included. All convincing records of ray-finned fishes from the Maastrichtian of the Netherlands and Belgium, inclusive of the Mons Basin, are teleosts, and... |

A relatively gigantic species of lanternfish, described below as representing a new genus, has appeared sparingly since 1950 in bathypelagic collections from off southern California and northern Baja California, Mexico. Although the distinctness of the species has been known for some time, most available specimens had generally been so badly damaged by the nets that an adequate evaluation of the various characters was not possible. Due to a recent increase in collecting effort in these regions, and to the use of a very large midwater trawl, more specimens have been taken than were before available, and a number of these are in a sufficiently good condition to permit the drawing of rather firm conclusions regarding the reliability and constancy of the... |

A survey is given of the correspondence between the ichthyologists Bleeker (The Hague) and Günther (British Museum, Natural History, London), mainly dealing with the sale of fishes and some other animals by Bleeker to the British Museum. The publication dates of the parts of the "Atlas ichthyologique des Indes orientales néerlandaises" (1862-1878) and of the volumes of "Catalogue of the fishes in the British Museum" (1859—1870) are discussed. The possible sale of type specimens is examined. Finally, a survey is given of the lists of fishes and reptiles requested by Günther and sent by Bleeker. |

When, in the fall of 1947, my predecessor, Dr. F. P. Koumans, suddenly withdrew from ichthyological research, some of the fossil fish-remains from Trinil, collected and partly examined by Prof. Dr. E. Dubois (1907; 1908), still remained to be investigated or re-examined. I gladly accepted the opportunity to complete the research on this interesting material. A considerable part of these fossil remains, labelled by Dr. Koumans (but not mentioned in his paper, 1948, p. 80) as "16 fragments of skullbones", which "probably belong to Ophicephalus spec." (no. 11640), still proved to be in a sufficient state of preservation to permit an accurate identification of the bones these fragments must represent, as well as of the kind of fish to which the greater part... |

During recent research on a small number of freshwater sharks from Lake Jamoer, Netherlands New Guinea, I was struck by the fact that the consulted literature clearly showed a deplorable lack of agreement in the choice of a generic name for the species belonging to the genus Carcharhinus Blainville, sensu Bigelow & Schroeder (1948, p. 320), even among recent authors. Though by far the majority of contemporary authors now seem to have accepted Carcharhinus, a decreasing number still uses either Galeolamna Owen or Eulamia Gill, or occasionally even Carcharias Cuvier. In the restricted list of literature given at the end of the present paper, eleven of the post-1900 authors finally used Carcharhinus (or Carcharinus), only two used Galeolamna (Whitley,... |

In chronologic order of publication, all papers dealing with the systematics of haplochromine cichlids of Lake Victoria are analysed with regard to the generic classification of the species. Taxonomists have disputed and changed the generic classification soon after cichlids from Lake Victoria were first described. At the turn of the century, different opinions among taxonomists working on Lake Victoria haplochromines were mainly based on the fact that they studied different material. The study of more extensive collections yielded the impression that differences between the species are gradual, rendering the delimitation of genera problematic. Recently, an attempt to use cladistic methods for the unravelling of the phylogeny of the haplochromines has... |

This genus was established by Dr. P. BLEEKER in 1874 1) for fishes belonging to the phalanx Sicydiini having the caracteristics: „Dentes intermaxillares stipitati apice clavati obtusi, inframaxillares serie interna parvi aequales, serie externa aciculares. Maxilla inferior cirris nullis. Squamae capite et trunco antice nullae, lateribus 40 circ. in serie longitudinali. B. 4. D. 5—10 vel 11. A. 11 vel 12. Sp. typ. Sicydium gymnauchen BLKR." (Bleeker l. c. p. 314). Afterwards in 1876 BLEEKER 2) gives the following description of this genus: „Corpus subelongatum vel elongatum squamatum, capite obtuso alepidoto, maxilla inferiore non cirrata. Dentes, intermaxillares mobiles uniseriati stipitati apice clavati obtusi, inframaxillares biseriati serie interna... |

A collection of Surinam fishes, all probably collected in the neighbourhood of Paramaribo during the late autumn of 1952, was kindly presented to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden by the direction of the Rotterdam Zoological Garden „Blijdorp". The collection contains some 800 specimens, the examination of which yielded sufficiently interesting results to justify the present publication. Order OSTARIOPHYSOIDEA Family CHARACINIDAE Curimatopsis macrolepis Steindachner 1 ex., neighbourhood of Paramaribo, standard length 26 mm (caudal fin damaged). This species was already known from the lower regions of the Surinam River and the Marowini River. Curimatus copei Fowler Curimatus copei Fowler, 1906, p. 301, fig. 7. 1 ex., neighbourhood of... |

The taxonomy of the common guppy, Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859, is reviewed and the closely related Campoma guppy, P. wingei n. sp., is described. Formerly, the common guppy was not judged to be closely related to any other species of Poecilia, but the new species is the second species to be allocated in the subgenus Acanthophacelus Eigenmann, 1907. The recognition of P. wingei results from observed character displacement, i.e., on the interaction between two closely related species in a shared environment. In addition to differences in coloration, behaviour also indicates specific differences. The area in which P. wingei occurs, the Campoma region at the base of the Paría Peninsula in Venezuela, hints to an origin of the subgenus Acanthophacelus prior... |

The faunal diversity of Lake Tanganyika, with its fish species flocks and its importance as a cradle and reservoir of ancient fish lineages seeding other radiations, has generated a considerable scientific interest in the fields of evolution and biodiversity. The Tropheini, an endemic Tanganyikan cichlid tribe, fills a peculiar phylogenetic position, being closely related to the haplochromine radiations of Lakes Malawi and Victoria. Several problems remain regarding their genus-level classification. For example, the monotypic genus Interochromis is phylogenetically nested within Petrochromis; its only representative, I. loocki, has often been reclassified. As monogenean flatworms are useful markers for fish phylogeny and taxonomy, the monogenean fauna of... |

Two large specimens of a hitherto unknown species of neotropical catfish have recently been found dead and washed ashore beneath the dike along the Westerscheldt near Biezelinge, Zeeland, at a mutual distance of approximately 300 meters. Both were in excellent condition and have been presented to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden by Mr. B. J. J. R. Walrecht. A superficial examination already disclosed the fact that the two specimens belong to the (sub)genus Selenaspis, a well known group of catfishes inhabiting the salt and brackish shores and estuaries of the northern part of the South American continent. Some of the species are known to spawn in fresh water. The present specimens must have been transported by ship. Whether they have been... |

In a previous paper (1952, p. 190) I reported upon a specimen from the Lucie River, Surinam, doubtlessly belonging to Boulenger's genus Brachychalcinus, but had to abstain from giving a definite specific identification on account of the lack of comparative material, the insufficiency of previous literature, and the obviously juvenile state of the single specimen. A possibility to look once more into this matter, and to amend my previous statement, was brought about by the existence of eight specimens from the same river system, and probably belonging to the same species, in the collections of the Chicago Natural History Museum, and the offer to have these sent to me as a loan. For this courtesy, and for the loan of a single juvenile specimen of... |

During the Tyro Mauritania Expedition (1988) of the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum (formerly Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie) Leiden, six species of Blenniidae were caught at the coast and on the shelf of Mauritania, off the Banc d'Arguin. Additional specimens of Spaniblennius riodourensis (Metzelaar, 1919), previously known only from the holotype, allow to more fully describe the species and the genus Spaniblennius Bath & Wirtz, 1989. New records of Parablennius pilicornis (Cuvier, 1829), Parablennius goreensis (Valenciennes, 1836), Lipophrys velifer (Norman, 1935), Lipophrys pholis (Linnaeus, 1758), and Blennius normani Poll, 1949, present extensions of the known ranges of these species.
