Wine grape pomace flour improves blood pressure, fasting glucose and protein damage in humans: a randomized controlled trial Biol. Res.
Urquiaga,Inés; D'Acuna,Sonia; Pérez,Druso; Dicenta,Sara; Echeverria,Guadalupe; Rigotti,Attilio; Leighton,Federico.
BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean diet is a healthy diet with positive scientific evidence of preventing chronic diseases. Bioactive components support the healthy properties of the Mediterranean diet. Antioxidants and fiber, two components of the Mediterranean diet, are key functional nutrients for healthy eating and nutrition. Wine grape pomace is a rich source of these dietary constituents and may be beneficial for human health. Our hypothesis was that the intake of red wine grape pomace flour (WGPF) prepared from red wine grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon variety) reduced the metabolic syndrome in humans. To evaluate the effect of WGPF on components of metabolic syndrome we design a 16-week longitudinal intervention study. Thirty-eight males, 30-65 years of age,...

Plant Polyphenol Antioxidants and Oxidative Stress Biol. Res.
URQUIAGA,INES; LEIGHTON,FEDERICO.
In recent years there has been a remarkable increment in scientific articles dealing with oxidative stress. Several reasons justify this trend: knowledge about reactive oxygen and nitrogen species metabolism; definition of markers for oxidative damage; evidence linking chronic diseases and oxidative stress; identification of flavonoids and other dietary polyphenol antioxidants present in plant foods as bioactive molecules; and data supporting the idea that health benefits associated with fruits, vegetables and red wine in the diet are probably linked to the polyphenol antioxidants they contain. In this review we examine some of the evidence linking chronic diseases and oxidative stress, the distribution and basic structure of plant polyphenol antioxidants,...

Onion (Allium cepa) is being studied as a potential anticancer agent, but little is known regarding its effect in multidrug resistance (MDR) cells. In this work, the cytotoxicity of crude onion extract (OE) and fractioned extract (aqueous, methanolic and ethyl acetate), as well as some onion compounds (quercetin and propyl disulfide) were evaluated in Lucena MDR human erythroleukemic and its K562 parental cell line. The capacity of OE to induce apoptosis and/or necrosis in these cells, the possible participation of oxidative stress and DNA damage were also assessed. Similar sensitivities were obtained for both tumoral cells, however only OE caused significant effects in the cells. In K562 cells, a significant increase of apoptosis was verified while the...

Antioxidant effect of 5-amino salicylic acid on copper-mediated LDL oxidation Biol. Res.
LÓPEZ-ALARCÓN,CAMILO; SPEISKY,HERNÁN; LISSI,EDUARDO.
The antioxidant effect of 5-Aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) on copper-mediated LDL oxidation was followed either by the emitted chemiluminiscence (CL) or by UV-vis spectroscopy. 5-ASA addition extends the lag phase in a concentration-dependent manner without changes in the rate of the process in the autoaccelerated phase. The antioxidant behavior of 5-ASA was very similar to that of Trolox, a very efficient water soluble antioxidant. The copper-binding capacity of 5-ASA was evaluated by UV-visible spectroscopy. The addition of copper to a 5-ASA solution increases the absorbance at 332 nm and generates a new band at 298 nm. These changes in the UV-vis spectra indicate formation of a complex between 5-ASA and copper. However, LDL protection by 5-ASA is unrelated...

Interaction of Olive Oil Phenol Antioxidant Components with Low-density Lipoprotein Biol. Res.
LAMUELA-RAVENTÓS,ROSA M; GIMENO,EVA; FITÓ,MONTSE; CASTELLOTE,ANA-ISABEL; COVAS,MARIBEL; DE LA TORRE-BORONAT,M. CARMEN; LÓPEZ-SABATER,M. CARMEN.
Phenolic compounds have shown to inhibit LDL oxidation in vitro and ex vivo; however, they are hydrosoluble compounds while LDL is a lipoprotein. Analysis of phenolic compounds in LDLs by HPLC is necessary to demonstrate their binding capacity to lipoproteins. We developed and validated a solid phase extraction method (SPE) that allowed us the purification of LDL samples and their analysis by HPLC. This methodology allowed us to demonstrate the in vitro binding capacity of tyrosol, one of the main phenolic compounds in olive oil, to LDL. In the intervention dietary study with volunteers, food rich in phenolic compounds affected LDL composition. Changes in LDL phenolics composition are not observed after the short-term ingestion of food rich in phenolic...

Erdönmez,Demet; Rad,Abbas Yousefi; Aksöz,Nilüfer.
ABSTRACT Quorum sensing system plays an active role in the regulation of pathogenicity of many microorganisms. Inhibition of pathogenicity or virulence factors will increase the success of treatment by preventing the development of antibiotic resistance. In this study, anti-quorum sensing activities of quercetin and resveratrol compounds, which have antioxidant property without damaging to host, have been determined via using biosensor bacteria: Chromobacterium violaceum ATCC 12472 and Chromobacterium violaceum CV026. As quorum sensing inhibitors, quercetin and resveratrol's cutting off the bacterial communication will prevent the treatment failures caused by the development of bacterial resistance. The development of layered drugs with antioxidant...
