Modelling potential spawning habitat of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Planque, Benjamin; Bellier, Edwige; Lazure, Pascal.
Large amplitude variations in recruitment of small pelagic fish result from interactions between a fluctuating environment and population dynamics processes such as spawning. The spatial extent and location of spawning, which is critical to the fate of eggs and larvae, can vary strongly from year to year, as a result of changing population structure and environmental conditions. Spawning habitat can be divided into 'potential spawning habitat', defined as habitat where the hydrographic conditions are suitable for spawning, 'realized spawning habitat', defined as habitat where spawning actually occurs, and 'successful spawning habitat', defined as habitat from where successful recruitment has resulted. Using biological data collected during the period...

Using acoustic telemetry to estimate post-release survival of undulate ray Raja undulata (Rajidae) in northeast Altantic ArchiMer
Morfin, Marie; Simon, Julien; Morandeau, Fabien; Baulier, Loic; Méhault, Sonia; Kopp, Dorothee.
The landing obligation introduced in the reform of the European Union Common Fisheries Policy requires landing all catches of species under quota. However, exemptions may be granted for species for which “scientific evidence demonstrates high survival rates”. Captivity experiments are often used to determine fish survival rates, but they are difficult to perform for large species such as rays due to the limited storage capacity of tanks. Thus, little information is available on ray survival after release despite an identified potential for high survival. We used acoustic telemetry to study rays discarded from a coastal bottom trawl fishery in their natural environment and present a new ad hoc approach to derive a minimum survival rate. After capture under...

Développement d'une plateforme d'évaluation de plans de gestion spatialisés : application à la pêcherie mixte démersale du golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Vigier, Audric.
North-East Atlantic fisheries management goes towards a regionalisation, accounting for mixed fisheries technical interaction. Hence, understanding and assessing the spatio-temporal dynamics of exploited species and the fleets exploiting them is needed. This study aims to provide a tool to assess the effects of several management scenarii in the Bay of Biscay. lt fouses on North-east Atlantic northern hake stock (Merluccius merluccius) and the mixed demersal hake - sole (Solea solea) - Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) Bay of Biscay fisheries.A Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE) framework has been developed, pairing a spatial northern hake stock assessment model, and an operating model (lSlS-Fish) simulating the Bay of Biscay mixed demersal...

Stable isotope ratios in bentho-demersal biota along a depth gradient in the bay of biscay: A multitrophic study ArchiMer
Schaal, Gauthier; Nerot, Caroline; Grall, Jacques; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Lorrain, Anne; Mortillaro, Jean-michel; Savoye, Nicolas; Brind'Amour, Anik; Paulet, Yves-marie; Le Bris, Herve.
Although stable isotope ratios are increasingly used to investigate the trophic ecology of marine organisms, their spatial variations are still poorly understood in the coastal environment. In this study, we measured the stable isotope composition (δ13C, δ15N) of suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) (primary producer), a suspension feeder, the great scallop Pecten maximus (primary consumer), megabenthic decapods and benthic fishes (secondary consumers) along a depth gradient (from 5m to 155m depth) across the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay. Although the three trophic levels exhibited similar δ13C patterns along the gradient, the δ15N patterns varied between SPOM, scallops and carnivores. The δ15N difference between SPOM and scallops...

A partnership between science and industry for a monitoring of anchovy & sardine in the Bay of Biscay: When fishermen are actors of science ArchiMer
Masse, Jacques; Sanchez, Florence; Delaunay, Damien; Robert, J. M.; Petitgas, Pierre.
Anchovy and sardine are small pelagic species occupying similar geographic areas in the Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic). Their biomass is strongly dependent on recruitment, making the annual assessment of TAC (Total Allowable Catch) a risky strategy due to uncertainty in predicting the magnitude of recruitment. Monitoring these resources more often and throughout their life cycle could allow management strategies to be adjusted based on observations which indicate the level of recruitment. In order to achieve a more frequent monitoring, an innovative data collection strategy involving a partnership between fishermen and scientists, was developed in 2009 and 2010 called “pilot sentinel surveys”. This paper details the partnership, the information such a...

Impact of warming on abundance and occurrence of flatfish populations in the Bay of Biscay (France) ArchiMer
Hermant, Marie; Lobry, Jeremy; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Poulard, Jean-charles; Le Pape, Olivier.
The aim of the present study was to analyse the influence of warming on flatfish populations in the Bay of Biscay. 17 autumn cruises conducted from 1987 to 2006 over the whole shelf of the Bay of Biscay provided data for the abundance and occurrence of adults for twenty flatfish species. Trends in flatfish abundance were analysed with regard to geographic range of populations and interannual fluctuations in abundance were related to seawater temperature. Results showed significant trends in abundance and occurrence for 55% of the flatfish species in the Bay of Biscay. The response to warming of seawater was correlated to geographic ranges of species. While the abundance of the northern temperate species decreased, that of southern ones increased. Moreover,...

Are trawl marks a good indicator of trawling pressure in muddy sand fishing grounds? ArchiMer
Merillet, Laurene; Kopp, Dorothee; Robert, Marianne; Salaun, Michele; Mehault, Sonia; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Mouchet, Maud.
The development of the vessel monitoring system (VMS) in the recent years has offered high-resolution data to map the distribution and intensity of fishing activities and contributed to enhancing the potential identification of fishing impacts. However, impacts could vary at very small scale and the resolution of VMS data might not be fine enough. Other proxy could be used, such as trawl marks visible on the seabed observed by underwater video or side-scan sonar to evaluate small-scale trawling effort. In the Bay of Biscay, an underwater video survey of the Nephrops norvegicus fishing ground was conducted and provided environmental characteristics such as depth and number of trawl marks at 152 transects. The relevance of observed trawl marks as a...

Les pêcheries mixtes de langoustine et de merlu du golfe de Gascogne. Description, préparation à une modélisation et à une simulation des procédures de gestion ArchiMer
Charuau, Anatole; Ifremer.
1 - Study's goals review The management of Norway Lobster and Hake fisheries can be considered as the most important issue in the Gascogne gulf. Calculation methods used to evaluate prediction variations under various efforts and mesh constraints all pinpoint to the crucial role narrow mesh fishing plays in Hakes' Northern stock status. The involvement of Gascogne gulf Norway Lobster fisheries regarding Hakes over exploitation seems over dimensioned when comparing the size of both of these stocks. Hake stocks spread from Northern Great Britain to Northern Spain, while Norway Lobster stocks are located in the Gascogne gulf's mud flats. The biological solution is well known and consists in globally increasing mesh nets to 80mm which would bring up Hakes...

The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. IFREMER has carried out halieutic observation campaigns for some twenty years along the coasts of France from oceanographic ships and chartered ships. The objective of these campaigns is to produce abundance indices of species that are of halieutic interest....

Les flottilles de pêche dans la mer territoriale du golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Leaute, Jean-pierre.
The regular aerial survey over the Bay of Biscay (France) by the French Custom Air Service enabled us to record precisely in 2001 the geographical positions of French fishing vessels inside the 12 nautical miles of the French Bay of Biscay (from Bay of Audierne to Spanish border). Among the 2396 ships counted in this area, 1810 were identified, corresponding actually to 900 boats since most of them (52 %) were seen several times. These 900 boats referred to 4 different "métiers", i.e. type of fishing activity: most of them (59 %) were bottom trawlers, 28 % gillnetters, 5 % potters and 5 % longliners; those which used another gear were less than 4 %. General characteristics of the 900 ships were identified: tonnage and power were respectively 25 TJB and 185...

Acoustic detection of the spatial and temporal distribution of fish shoals in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Scalabrin, Carla; Masse, Jacques.
Echo sounder data were used to investigate the spatio-temporal variability of shoal behaviour in the Bay of Biscay. Data collected from annual surveys were processed using MOVIES-B software in order to mcasure this variability. The software was designed to measure morphological, energetic and space-time distribution descriptors from the acoustic signal received from fish shoals. Two surveys, DAAG 90 and DAAG 91, provided the appropriate characteristics for such an analysis. The survey's objective was to obtain relative abundance indices for the anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) biomass in the Bay of Biscay. The surveys were carried out in the same area (southern Bay of Biscay), at the same period (April) within one year interval (1990 and 1991), using the...

Analyse des petits pelagiques, sardine et anchois, dans le golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Coiffec, Gaelle; Duhamel, Erwan; Biseau, Alain; Danzart, Marc.
Since 1993 the yearly amounts of sardine landings for the Bay of Biscay fishing ports have experienced a constant increase (10,000 tonnes in 1993); on that account sardine is the first species landed in the fishing ports of the Bay of Biscay (15,000 tonnes in 2003). It is sold 0.54 € / kg (constant price over ten years) which means a 8,100 k€ turnover in 2003 and the 12th rank in value landed in the fishing ports of Bay of Biscay. Though anchovy landings have decreased over the last ten years, especially since 2001, this species occupies the 3rd rank of the highest landings (7,300 tonnes) of the Atlantic shoreline in 2003.The decrease of anchovy landings over the last ten years may account for the high increase of its constant sale price of 1.5 € / kg from...

Influence of bottom trawling on sediment resuspension in the 'Grande-Vasière' area (Bay of Biscay, France) ArchiMer
Mengual, Baptiste; Cayocca, Florence; Le Hir, Pierre; Draye, Robin; Laffargue, Pascal; Vincent, Benoit; Garlan, Thierry.
Sea trials were performed on two zones with different fishing efforts on the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ('Grande-VasiSre' area of muddy sand) in order to assess particulate matter resuspension and seabed disturbances (i.e., penetration, reworking, grain size changes) induced by different types of trawls. Optical and acoustic measurements made in the water column indicate a significant trawling-induced resuspension mainly due to the scraping action of doors. It manifests as a highly dynamic turbid plume confined near the seabed, where suspended sediment concentrations can reach 200 mg l(-1). Concentration levels measured behind an "alternative" configuration (trawls with jumper doors instead of classical doors penetrating the sediment) are...

Analysis of salinity measurements near islands on the French continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Lazure, Pascal; Jegou, Anne-marie; Kerdreux, Michel.
The Bay of Biscay is characterised by large fresh water inputs from two major rivers, the Loire and the Gironde, with a mean discharge of about 900 m(3)/s. To describe the spatial and temporal variability of the Loire and Gironde plumes, continuous salinity measurements were made at 4 locations on French coastal islands over periods lasting at least two years. These islands are located at a distance from the large local gradients linked to local inputs. Whereas sea surface salinity in the centre of the Bay of Biscay is 35.6, salinities at the coast vary between about 35 in summer to occasionally less than 30 in late winter or in spring. Minimum salinities do not occur at the same time along the coast, indicating a strong spatial gradient. Near the Loire...

Analysis of tagging data from North Atlantic Albacore (Thunnus Alalunga): Attrition Rate Estimates ArchiMer
Ortiz De Zarate, Victoria; Bertignac, Michel.
In this study, an attempt is made to estimate natural mortality rate for North Atlantic albacore. We implement a spatially aggregated tag-attrition model to analyse the results of an albacore tagging experiment conducted in the Bay of Biscay from 1988 to 1991. The model predicts probabilities of the possible fates of tagged fish and the tags that they carry. The model includes several parameters consisting of catchabilities by fleets involved in recaptures and a combination of natural mortality plus emigration from the study area. Model fitting is carried out by finding the maximum of a multinomial likelihood function. Effect of reporting rate values on the estimations are evaluated and several hypothesis on the pre-mixing period of the tagged fish...

Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) egg density measurements in the Bay of Biscay: evidence for the spatial variation in egg density with sea surface salinity ArchiMer
Goarant, Anne; Petitgas, Pierre; Bourriau, Paul.
Knowledge of the pelagic vertical distribution of fish eggs is central for several aspects of fisheries science including fisheries recruitment and egg production studies. In modelling egg vertical distributions, variation in fish egg density is an important issue. Though variation in egg density between individual eggs has been reported, evidence for significant spatial variation in egg density is novel. The present study provides evidence that egg density of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) varies spatially across spawning sites in the Bay of Biscay, depending on the regional scale variation in sea water properties due to river discharge. We measured the density of the eggs using a density gradient column at 17 stations in 2005 and 2006 as well as their...

Monitoring of a quasi-stationary eddy in the Bay of Biscay by means of satellite, in situ and model results ArchiMer
Caballero, Ainhoa; Ferrer, Luis; Rubio, Anna; Charria, Guillaume; Taylor, Benjamin H.; Grima, Nicolas.
The presence of a quasi-stationary anticyclonic eddy within the southeastern Bay of Biscay (centred around 44°30′N-4°W) has been reported on various occasions in the bibliography. The analysis made in this study for the period 2003–2010, by using in situ and remote sensing measurements and model results shows that this mesoscale coherent structure is present almost every year from the end of winter-beginning of spring, to the beginning of fall. During this period it remains in an area limited to the east by the Landes Plateau, to the west by Le Danois Bank and Torrelavega canyon and to the northwest by the Jovellanos seamount. All the observations and analysis made in this contribution, suggest that this structure is generated between Capbreton and...
