Ecosystemes benthiques profonds et chimiosynthese bacterienne: Sources hydrothermales et suintements ArchiMer
Laubier, Lucien.
Hydrothermal communities of various species compositions have been described from the eastern and western Pacific and Atlantic. Brine and cold seeps and hydrocarbon seepages have been found off Florida, off the Oregon and Japanese subduction systems, on the Laurentian Fan, near Barbados, and off Louisiana. Biomasses range from 10 to 70 kg/m super(2), fresh weight. Basic microdistribution of species groups in aureoles centered around hydrothermal vents reveals different levels of adaptation to harsh physico-chemical conditions. Two groups of primary producers can be recognized: a highly efficient cool water group with large vestimentiferan tube worms and bivalves, and alvinellid polychaetes adapted to hot waters. Both groups are exploited by specific...

Plante-cuny, Marie-reine; Bodoy, Alain.
The primary production (phytoplankton and microphytobenthos) of a coastaL shallow water ecosystem (0.5 m) was investigated in two sandy areas, differing by their wave exposure. The physical and chemical parameters, the functional chlorophyll and pheopigments as well as the primary production were measured monthly, throughout a two-year study. The bivalve Ruditapes decussatus was the dominant species in the sheltered station (RD), whereas Donax trlmcu/us inhabited the other station (DT) which was exposed to the open-sea waves. Microphytic biomasses were determined after extracting chlorophyll a and pheopigments in 90% acetone. by spectrophotometric measurements before and after acidification. Gross hourly primary production was estimated by measuring the...

Four seasonal compaigns providing a sampling of 15 stations each followed during half a tide cycle, i.e. 120 water samples permit the definition of the main hydrobiological features of Marennes-Oleron Bay: salinity and turbidity, phytoplanktonic biomasses, ATP concentrations. The authors suggest that a new way of adapted sampling to their objectives, will work out in the future by sampling during tidal cycles but as frequently as possible.

Maestrini, S; Rochet, M; Legendre, L; Demers, S.
Nutrient analyses were done in melted ice, frazil and sea water of the upper part of the water column, where as major constitutive elements of micro-algae were analysed. Measurements of nutrient uptake were carried out with frazil algae incubated at -1.5 degree C in a field incubator. Differential-enrichment bioassays and mean N/P ratio (5.9) demonstrated that actual growth of the cultures was nutrient-limited. Nitrogen governed the algal yield when illumination and grazing allowed the microalgae to grow. It concluded that the epontic dynamics is not only controlled from above, by the seasonal (climatic) changes in light intensity as generally assumed, but also from below, by the short-term (hydrodynamic) events of vertical mixing that replenish the...

I. Bactéries hétérotrophés aérobies ArchiMer
Baleux, B.; Caumette, P.; Trousselier, M..
Numeration, biomass, distribution within time, some physiological characters and a taxonomical outline, with a standardized micro method, of aerobic hétérotrophie bacteria isolated from sediments an waters, from fishponds of "Domaine de Certes" (Arcachon) from june 1977 to may 1978 are described. Number of hétérotrophie bacteria evolved in a significant way, according to seasons, and bacterial biomass is higher in the sediments than in the waters. Metabolic or physiological differences (proteolysis, denitrification) appeared among populations due to the origin of sediments. Moreover the qualitative study pointed out taxonomical units as Bacillus associated to seasons, or Agrobacterium associated to vegetable detritical sediments.

Productivity in tropical upwelling areas considered by a new method of analysis and determination. ArchiMer
Minas, H; Minas, M; Packard, T.
When in frontal zones of upwelling areas, a two-component mixing of nutrient rich upwelled water and oligotrophic offshore waters occurs, the amounts of nutrient consumed (- Delta N) and oxygen produced (+ Delta O2) can be evaluated by a detailed analysis of diagrams, in which salinity is the conservative parameter. By this same method, the corresponding T-S diagram allows a determination of the net heat gain of the upwelling water body during its offshore transport, and consequently the corresponding residence time in the photic zone. By integrating the nutrient consumption over the whole upwelling area, it is possible to obtain a more realistic average value of the productivity than with direct measurements of photosynthetic activity (14C and other...

Mazurie, Joseph; Bouget, Jean-francois.
in order to estimate the carrying capacity of Mont Saint-Michel Bay, the stock (or biomass) of cupped oysters, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated intertidally, in Cancale Bay, has been estimated in october 2002. Aerial photographs, at 2 scales (1/10 000 and 1/2000), provided by the mollusc farmers union, have been used to estimate the cumulative length of surelevaged trestles (« tables ») and the occupation rate by oyster bags. A field survey, between the 7th and 9th of october 2002, has been conducted by Ifremer with the help of « Lycée Maritime de Saint-Malo », on 40 sampled stations : 3 subsample bags per station were examined (counts and weights of different age-class oysters). 309 ha out of 333 leased ha were considered exploited (after elimination of...

Greater Mitochondrial Energy Production Provides Resistance to Ocean Acidification in “Winning” Hermatypic Corals ArchiMer
Agostini, Sylvain; Houlbrèque, Fanny; Biscéré, Tom; Harvey, Ben P.; Heitzman, Joshua M.; Takimoto, Risa; Yamazaki, Wataru; Milazzo, Marco; Rodolfo-metalpa, Riccardo.
Coral communities around the world are projected to be negatively affected by ocean acidification. Not all coral species will respond in the same manner to rising CO2 levels. Evidence from naturally acidified areas such as CO2 seeps have shown that although a few species are resistant to elevated CO2, most lack sufficient resistance resulting in their decline. This has led to the simple grouping of coral species into “winners” and “losers,” but the physiological traits supporting this ecological assessment are yet to be fully understood. Here using CO2 seeps, in two biogeographically distinct regions, we investigated whether physiological traits related to energy production [mitochondrial electron transport systems (ETSAs) activities] and biomass (protein...

Stock assesments of the non-cultivated molluscs in the oyster culture area of Marennes Oleron ArchiMer
Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
A quantitative sampling was made on the non-cultivated molluscs of the soft bottom macrofauna in the bay of Marennes-Oleron. A stratified random sampling, including an optimal allocation strategy. provided adequate data to estimate abundance and biomass (total weight. dry weight and ash-free-dry weight) of each molluscan species. The main stratification factors were respectively the bathymetric levels. the different types of sediment and the differences between natural, oyster-free mud flats and cultivated areas. A Smith Mc-Intyre grab was used to sample the subtidal, shallow areas and the tidal flats as well. The total number of sampling stations was 370. The final estimation of the total weight of benthic molluscs was 14,400 ± 3,000 tons (at 95 %...

Estimates of carbon flow through bacteriplankton in the S. Benguela upwelling region based on 3H-thymidine incorporation and predator-free incubations. ArchiMer
Lucas, M; Painting, S; Muir, D.
Spatial and temporal estimates of bacterial numbers, biomass, activity and production were measured in the S. Benguela upwelling system during the course of a phytoplankton bloom. Bacterial numbers and biomass were highest in the euphotic zone and correlated closely with particulate carbon in the water column rather than with chlorophyll a concentrations. 3H-Thymidine incorporation gave good estimates of production. Differential utilisation of photosynthetic exudates and detrital POC by bacterioplankton during the course of a bloom might account for the varying significance ascribed to exudates and POC as a source of carbon for bacterial production.

Phytoplankton production in the Tagus estuary (Portugal) ArchiMer
Cabecadas, L.
Biomass and phytoplankton photosynthetic response were studied in the lower Tagus estuary weekly, and related to environmental conditions in February, March and April 1994. The Photosynthesis-Irradiance ((P-I)-I-B) relation was studied based on the light-saturated photosynthesis rate (P(B)m) and the light-limited initial slope (a(B)). The nutrient concentrations observed were high enough to be considered as not limiting phytoplankton growth. Tagus estuary phytoplankton seems, to a certain extent, adapted to high turbid conditions, being able to utilize the low light levels more efficiently, which was translated by high values of a(B) [0.10-0.20 mg C (mg Chl a)(-1) h(-1) (W m(-2))(-1)]; however, light seems to limit phytoplankton production in the water...

Heral, Maurice; Prou, Jean; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc.
The authors are comparing the recruitment, the commercialised production, the cultivated biomasses of oysters Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata with the statistics of the meteorology (1885-1984). The temperature plays a role up on the date of spawning but partialy explains the lack of recruitment, which has less impact on the commercialised production than on the total biomass. The annual and seasonal characteristics of the precipitations and water temperatures do not show tight correlations with the variations of the production and of the biomass, for these cultivated populations in opposition with the sensitivity of the natural molluscan populations towards the climatic factors.

The composition, biomass and diversity of the fauna in a Bathymodiolus thermophilus mussel assemblage colonizing diffuse flow areas on the SEPR is described and compared with biological characteristics of other hydrothermal assemblages. The spatio-temporal dynamics of temperatures over fine scales within the mussel habitat are characterized using newly-developed statistical approaches. Temperature data obtained from two adjacent habitats (a cirriped assemblage and a bare substratum) are compared. The results of the temperature data show that the mean temperature and the temperature variations were significantly higher in the mussel assemblage (mean temperature: 4.12 +/- 1.85 degrees C) in comparison with 2.40 +/- 0.14 degrees C in the cirriped assemblage...

Caill-milly, Nathalie; Duclercq, Benoit; Morandeau, Gilles.
Between 1980 and 1986, some Arcachon oyster farmers took up breeding the Japanese clam on the foreshore (Robert et Deltreil, 1990). This production was short lived. The steep fall in prices due to economic competition from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Tunisia, predator action such as the trigger fish (Popovsky et al., 1999), added to the significant amount of mortality that occurred in the summer and autumn of 1992 that affected two-thirds of the total stock, led to clam farming being abandoned at the end of the 1980s. In the Arcachon basin, the Japanese clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) population, now natural to the area, has found favourable conditions for development and is expanding rapidly there. This species has been supplanting the local species...

Seasonal development of bacterial communities in a coastal marine sediment as related to the input of organic material. ArchiMer
Meyerreil, L; Graf, G.
The seasonal development of benthic communities was followed in a coastal marine sediment of the Kiel Bight (Baltic Sea; FRG). Total benthic biomass, (ATP), bacterial biomass, overall benthic activity (heat production), and enzymatic decomposition rates of carbohydrate (d-amylase activity) followed a seasonal cycle strongly related to certain events in the sediment. Among these, the input of the phytoplankton blooms in autumn and spring, the accumulation of organic material during winter, and changes in the physical characteristics of the sediment turned out to be most important for the development of benthic biomass and activity. Processes within the benthic community occurred in very short time scales (within days).
