Rice contains several kinds of bio-functional components. In this study, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and Tocopherol, or Vitamin E were identified and their relationships to antioxidant activity using DPPH assay of both brown and pre germinated Thai rice varieties were studied. GABA are one of the two inhibitory neurotransmitters which make the neuron resistant to stimulation by excitatory neurotransmitters and inhibitor of some cancer cells activity whereas Tocopherol, or Vitamin E, which acts as antioxidant and improve blood cholesterol. Identification of GABA and Tocopherol in both brown and pre-germinated brown rice grown from different locations were conducted in eleven varieties, namely: Khao Dawk Mali 105, PTT1, CN1, RD31, Sang yod, RD6, Hom... |

Acylated Steryl Glucosides (ASGs) are unsaponified matters that are ubiquitously distributed in edible plant sources, for example barley, maize and brown rice. ASGs in pre-germinated brown rice have reported to improve insulin activity and blood glucose control mechanisms in the diabetic condition through the activation of insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and increasing of IGF-1 production. Recently, the medical studies confirm that dietary intake of brown and pre-germinated brown rice is useful for alleviating symptoms of both diabetes and pre-diabetes. To improve the functional dietary intake of Thai rice, identification of ASGs in seven varieties, namely: Khao Dawk Mali 105, PTT1, RD31, Sang Yod, RD6, Niaw Dam Chum Pae and Niaw Dam Maw, brown and... |

Abstract Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) is a crop of globally importance on whose production around 20 million people depend directly. The crop is threatened due to the incidence of diseases caused by phytopathogenic fungi such as Moniliophthora roreri, causing losses of more than 80 % of the annual production. For this reason, in this study, a natural product such as the essential oil (EO) obtained from Siparuna guianensis was evaluated as a control alternative. The chemical composition of the EO, as well as the antifungal effect in vitro and in vivo on M. roreri, the causal agent of moniliasis frosty pod rot, were determined in the cacao pods located in a commercial plantation in southern Huila, Colombia. 28 compounds were detected, predominating:... |

Based on sedimentological and geochemical data, this work relates spectrophotometric measurements with sediment composition and its application in palaeoecological studies of Amazon wetlands. The CIELAB values are directly related to mineralogical and chemical composition, mostly involving quartz, iron oxyhydroxides and sulfides (e.g. pyrite), and total organic carbon. Total organic carbon contents between 0.4-1%, 1-2%, 3-5% and 15-40% were related to L* (lightness) data of 27, 26-15, 7-10 and 7 or less, respectively. The CIELAB values of a deposit in Marabá, Pará, were proportional to variations in quartz and total organic carbon contents, but changes in zones of similar color, mainly in the +a* (red) and +b* (yellow) values of deposits in Calçoene, Amapá... |

This study evaluated the nutritional characteristics of hay of nineteen hybrids between sorghum and Sudan grass. The experimental design was a randomized block with nineteen treatments and three replications. The chemical characteristics of the respective hays were analyzed 52 days after sowing and 45 and 49 regrowth days. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance, and when the F test was significant, the treatment means were compared by the Scott and Knott test at 5%. Genotypes 1013026 and 1014020 showed similar dry matter content. As for ether extract content, the highest values ranged from 2.20 to 2.66%. Higher values of minerals were observed in hybrids 1013026 and 1011005. In relation to crude protein, higher content values were reported for hybrids... |

To evaluate the grass B. brizantha cv. Marandu, under grazing, we use three sampling methods: total availability (TA), hand plucked (HP) and extrusa (EXT) in a completely randomized design with four replications. The hand plucked method was collected manually after observing the behavior of grazing animals. TA was determined by cutting at ground level, using a metallic square (0.25 m²) and EXT was collected by rumen evacuation. The values for dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF), were 27.20, 88.52 and 43.70% in the treatment and HP, and 25.53, 87.70 and 45.50% in TA. The extrusa had the lowest DM content (15.88%) and higher crude protein (CP) (15.22%), possibly due to the presence of saliva. The levels checked for... |

The aim of this study was to evaluate the addition of macauba palm cake (Acrocomia aculeata) on the chemical composition, fermentation and aerobic stability of elephant grass silages (Pennisetum purpureum). The experiment was performed in a completely randomized design with four replicates. The treatments were composed of six levels of macauba palm cake (0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30%) as additive to elephant grass silage. Dry matter and ethereal extract content of the silage increased linearly with the inclusion of the additive. Addition levels of 15.54% would provide 35% of dry mass, and the limit of 7.00% of ethereal extract in the silage could be obtained with 10.47%. The neutral detergent fiber content reduced linearly from 68.97 to 52.59%, but lignin... |
