Fractions of particulate organic matter in soils depending upon farmyard manure and mineral fertilization Organic Eprints

In a long-term fertilization trial particulate organic matter (POM) was investigated after 20 years of farmyard manure vs. mineral fertilization at different levels with the method of Meijboom et al. (1995). The organic matter was separated with sodium polytungstate (Magid et al., 1996; Six et al., 1999) into a light (p <1.13 g cm-3), medium (1.13-1.37 g cm-3) and heavy (p >1.37 g cm-3) fraction. The organically fertilized plots had lower contents of the light fraction (0.73 - 0.78 g kg-1 dry matter on average of all fields) compared to the mineral treatment (0.95 g kg-1 TS). Modelling N2O emissions from organic fertilisers for LCA inventories Organic Eprints

Apart from mineral fertilisers, organic fertilisers act mainly via the soil C-N pool in order to provide available nitrogen to plants. This different mode of action is not reflected so far in the current IPCC N2O emission model. Here we propose a simple model to calculate N2O emissions from organic fertilisers and plant residues. It considers the long-term immobilisation of N within stable organic matter in the soil as well as the mineralisation of additional N from the soil pool. A first test with field data showed reliable simulations of measured N2O emissions. In 2012 about 25 % of permanent Austrian grasslands were managed organically. At the same time the farms enlarged their average field areas especially in Alpine regions. In order to investigate intensification limits of montane meadows, an on-farm field experiment at the Upper Styrian Pöls valley was established in 2008. The triannual case study consisted of a balanced incomplete block design with 30 sub-plots at two autochthonous meadows of the Trisetetum association. Finding new cover crops for Estonian conditions Organic Eprints

Cover crops are essential in fallow periods of cropping systems to protect the soil from erosion and loss of plant nutrients through leaching and runoff (especially in winter). Experiments with potential cover crop species were carried out to evaluate their suitability to the local climate. The biomass production of tested cover crops in the experiment that lasted for two years was different depending on the length of the growing seasons.

Background and aims We investigated whether the incorporation of intercropped white clover as a split-dose fertiliser improves N retention of the plant-soil system in leek production. Methods White clover and leek were grown in pots where clover was stepwise incorporated into soil as fertiliser. Tecniche di gestione della fertilità del suolo in una coltura di pomodoro. Organic Eprints

Due tipi di sovescio (favino puro e favino + avena) con due epoche di interramento (inizio aprile e fine aprile) in combinazione fattoriale, sono stati confrontati in una azienda sperimentale della Campania, per valutare gli effetti sulla produzione di pomodoro. Dai primi risultati, si può evidenziare come la fertilità residua del terreno, dovuta alla precessione di leguminose, è stata sufficiente a sostenere almeno in parte le produzioni di pomodoro (311 q ha-1). Gli apporti di N sono stati più alti nel caso del sovescio di favino puro e con l’interramento tardivo: 72 e 142 kg ha-1 di N per il favino e 45 e 80 kg ha-1 di N per il sovescio misto, rispettivamente nelle due epoche di interramento. Searching the critical soil organic carbon threshold for satisfactory tilth conditions – test of the Dexter clay:carbon hypothesis Organic Eprints

The concern for deteriorating soil structure at low soil organic matter (SOM) contents calls for better knowledge of SOM interaction with soil minerals as well as guidelines for soil conservation. We measured clay dispersibility in a field with a textural gradient. Our results support the concept of differentiating soil content of clay in a complexed and non-complexed part although our data did not point out an exact clay/OC ratio threshold. Our results also indicated that labile fractions of SOM may play an important role in soil physical behavior. SUREVEG - recirkulering af planteaffald og samdyrkning af grønsager Organic Eprints

Core Organic Cofund projekt bevilget i 2018, der går ud på at udvikle nye økologiske dyrkningsystemer til produktion af grøntsager. Målet er at forbedre systemernes bæredygtighed og resiliens, recirkulering af næringsstoffer og jordens lagring af kulstof. Projektet blev præsenteret ved Åbent hus arrangement hos Klintholm (deponerings- og affaldsbehandlingsanlæg ejet af seks fynske kommuner) i samarbejde med Naturstyrelsen og Danmarks Naturfredningsforening, den 30. maj 2018.

Prosjektet “Forsøk med fermentering av husdyrgjødsel» (2016-2018) prøver ut tilsetning av effektive mikroorganismer (EM) i dyrerom og gjødsellagre på noen gårder i Norge. Et kontrollert forsøk ble gjennomført på Tingvoll vinteren 2017-18. Uttrykket «effektive mikroorganismer» ble først brukt i Japan, der forskere isolerte og dyrket opp stammer av ulike jordboende sopp og bakterier, og prøvde dem ut i ulike kombinasjoner som tilsetning til dyrka jord. Ideen var å utkonkurrere den stedlige mikrofloraen og få sunnere planter og bedre avlinger. Ved produktion af væksthuskulturer er der behov for tilførsel af meget store mængder næring. Da plantenæringsstoffer samtidig er en begrænset ressource i økologisk planteproduktion, kan det være vanskeligt at skaffe tilstrækkelig næring fra økologiske husdyrbrug, hvor gødningen til økologiske væksthuse hovedsagligt kommer fra. I ORCTOM-projektet er næringsmæssig kvalitet og struktur af kompost baseret på lettilgængelige planterester derfor blevet undersøgt.

Le manque de références sur les besoins des cultures d’une part, et sur les possibilités de fournitures du sol par minéralisation d’autre part, amène bien souvent les producteurs à « naviguer à vue » en utilisant des doses standards, qui ne reposent pas sur des bases agronomiques éprouvées. Les suivis réalisés par le GRAB sur aubergine en 2003 et melon en 2004 montrent qu’il est possible de diminuer les doses d’engrais azotés, sans perte de rendement. Die Humusversorgung acker- und gemüsebaulich genutzter Böden nimmt im ökologischen Landbau eine zentrale Stellung ein. Über die Fruchtfolge und den Stickstoffkreislauf sollte in Betrieben eine optimale Humusreproduktion gewährleistet werden, da ein Absinken der Humusgehalte unterhalb tolerierbarer Werte langfristig eine Abnahme der Bodenfruchtbarkeit und der Ertragspotentiale mit sich bringt. The potential of different plant based organic fertilisers (PBOF) to substitute animal based organic fertilisers (ABOF) in organic vegetable production were investigated in incubation, pot and field experiments. PBOFs have the potential to replace ABOFs. Particularly legume seed meals show fast net N-release even at low soil temperatures. Considerable differences in nitrate contents of vegetables can be found between the different fertilisers although fresh matter and N yields are nearly identical.

Kvælstofoptagelse i afgrøde og ukrudt ved placeret handels- og husdyrgødning Organic Eprints

Ved tilførsel af kvælstof i såvel husdyrgødning som handelsgødning bliver kun omkring 60% af det mineralske kvælstof optaget i afgrøden i den første vækstsæson, mens den resterende del fastlægges i jorden (immobiliseres). I forhold til indarbejdning af gødningen i jorden giver direkte nedfældning i koncentrerede strenge minimal kontakt med jorden, hvorved en større del af det tilførte kvælstof forbliver plantetilgængeligt, men hvilken betydning har gødningsstrengens placering for afgrødens optagelse af det tilførte kvælstof?

La lutte contre les adventices et l’amélioration de la fertilité sont deux priorités en agriculture biologique : la culture d’engrais verts est une méthode permettant de concilier ces 2 objectifs. Les engrais verts permettent notamment d’introduire une biodiversité « interculturale » dans les rotations, de maintenir ou d’améliorer les qualités agronomiques et structurales des sols et de réduire l’enherbement. Les essais conduits par le GRAB en 2003 et 2004 ont permis de sélectionner plusieurs types d’engrais verts qui sont particulièrement performants sur ce créneau : les crucifères (moutarde, navette) et certains mélanges graminées et légumineuses. Organic farming systems should be characterized by excellent soil fertility management to keep plant nutrient cycles short and as closed as possible. Therefore, it is extremely important to establish growing systems that have rotations with appropriate crops and intercrops to ensure fertile and biologically active soils, to enhance biodiversity and to provide high quality crop yields. Locally available organic fertilizers include green manures and animal manure. The influence of green manures as intercrops and these combined with composted cattle manure on soil properties, biodiversity indicators and crop yields was studied in a crop rotation experiment in three organic systems at the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
