Anaerobic co-digestion of grass and forbs – Influence of cattle manure or grass based inoculum Organic Eprints
Cong, W.-F.; Moset, V.; Feng, L.; Møller, H.B.; Eriksen, J..
Anaerobic co-digestion of agricultural by-products or wastes with complementarity characteristics is commonly used to enhance methane yield. This study firstly explores the possibility of co-digesting grass and forb species (white clover, chicory and plantain) differing in nutrient composition in enhancing methane yield. This was examined with two inocula (a cattle manure-based inoculum and a grass-based inoculum) in a batch assay. Results showed that co-digesting grass and forbs synergistically enhanced methane yield potential on average by 31 L kg−1 volatile solids (+11%) and reduced lag phase time by 0.8 day in the grass-based inoculum, but not in the cattle manure-based inoculum. Mixtures containing plantain showed more consistent synergistic effect...

Efterafgrøder efter kløvergræs før vårhvede Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Henrik.

An overview on the role and potential of forage production on lowland organic livestock farms Organic Eprints
Weller, Richard F; Jones, Evan L.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference of the Colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR). This paper outlines some of the factors influencing the level of forage production on organic lowland farms. Optimal forage production is achieved by maintaining soil fertility, providing a balance between N-fixing and N-demanding crops and producing sufficient quantities of quality feed to meet the requirements of the organic livestock enterprise. A key objective for organic systems is to increase the efficiency of forage production by improving the nutrient input/output balance of the wholefarm system. Improving forage quality reduces the requirement for external feed sources, leading to increased self-sufficiency in the wholefarm system....

Entwicklung der Nährstoff- und Humusgehalte am Standort Gülzow nach langjähriger ökologischer Bewirtschaftung Organic Eprints
Gruber, Harriet; Burmann, Birgit.

Stepwise incorporation of white clover (Trifolium repens L.)as fertiliser increases nitrogen fixation and improves nitrogen retention when intercropped with leek (Allium porrum L.) Organic Eprints
Xie, Yue; Sørensen, Jørn Nygaard; Petersen, Karen Koefoed; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg.
Background and aims We investigated whether the incorporation of intercropped white clover as a split-dose fertiliser improves N retention of the plant-soil system in leek production. Methods White clover and leek were grown in pots where clover was stepwise incorporated into soil as fertiliser. Half of the clover was incorporated before leek transplantation (LT), the other half was incorporated 26 (S1) or 41 (S2) days after LT, compared with full incorporation of all clover (F) before LT. 15N injection and leaching studies were performed to investigate interspecific competition and the effects of precipitation on soil N availability. Results Stepwise incorporations increased or had no effect on leek growth, despite competition for N between white...

Competitive ability of grain legume-barley intercrops towards volunteer crops and weeds Organic Eprints
Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Tranberg Nikolajsen, Jacob; Steen Jensen, Erik.
Field pea (Pisum sativum L.) and blue lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) were either sole cropped or inter-cropped with barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) at two levels of nitrogen application to determine the effects of interspecific interaction in an intercrop and nitro-gen fertility on competitive ability towards volunteer crops - exemplified by red clover (Trifolium pratense). The dynamically change of competitive ability by intercropped species over time was shown to be im-portant in order to reduce opportunities for growth of volunteer crops and weeds

Searching the critical soil organic carbon threshold for satisfactory tilth conditions – test of the Dexter clay:carbon hypothesis Organic Eprints
Schjønning, P.; de Jonge, L.W.; Moldrup, P.; Christensen, B.T.; Olesen, J.E..
The concern for deteriorating soil structure at low soil organic matter (SOM) contents calls for better knowledge of SOM interaction with soil minerals as well as guidelines for soil conservation. We measured clay dispersibility in a field with a textural gradient. Our results support the concept of differentiating soil content of clay in a complexed and non-complexed part although our data did not point out an exact clay/OC ratio threshold. Our results also indicated that labile fractions of SOM may play an important role in soil physical behavior. We revisited literature data and found evidence that soil content of fines (<2 or <20 μm) is a major determinant of soil specific surface area (SA). We noted that soil SA coverage with SOM changed...

Intercropping grain peas with barley Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas; Clerc, Maurice; Stöcklin, Milo.
Intercropping of legumes with cereals is a promising possibility to produce fodder protein while creating few costs and using few resources. Practicable cultivation methods of intercropping with protein peas/barley and field beans/oats were developed, both with mixing ratios of 80% and 40%, respectively, of the usual local seeding amount for the single crop (possible for winter crops as well as for spring crops). The grain serves as a support crop, suppresses weeds and provides a risk coverage in years of poor grain legume development. Since 2010, the acreage of organic peas and beans, mostly grown in mixed cultures, has multiplied. This increase was also possible due to mills that buy and separate the yield of intercropping systems into its...

Modelling crop rotations of organic farms Organic Eprints
Bachinger, J.; Zander, P..
With the described holistic model approach it is possible to generate agronomically-suitable and detailed 3-8 year crop rotations for diluvial sites in north-eastern Germany under the special demands of organic farming systems with and without livestock production. The stand-alone version can be used for crop rotation planning at the farm level. In addition, this model version may be applied for studying the influence of the parameter and estimation algorithm ranges within the model on the complex interactions between site condition, cropping methods and the rotational cropping systems. Sensitivity analyses show those model parameters and estimation algorithms which have to be managed with special care and those for which further research is needed.

Grain legumes and nitrate leaching: significance and prevention Organic Eprints
Jensen, E.S.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, H.; Aveline, A.; Crozat, Y..
The amount of internationally published evidence on the effects of grain legumes on nitrate leaching is sparse and some studies may have weak points. Nevertheless, this mini-review indicates that the level of N leaching is 0–20 kg N ha-1 greater after pea than after cereals. Methods to prevent N leaching should be further developed and there is a need to genetically improve the root systems of grain legumes.

Beisaat von Zwischenfrüchten als Möglichkeit zur Reduzierung der N-Auswaschung in Wintergetreide? Organic Eprints
Loges, Dr. Ralf; Mauscherning, Inken; Taube, Prof. Dr. Friedhelm.
In a field experiment the potential of mixtures of winter cereals and catch crops to reduce nitrate leaching was investigated. Pure winter wheat showed the highest N-losses (56 kg N ha-1). Compared to a control without a catch crop, winter rye and oilseed radish grown in pure stand or in mixture with a winter cereal reduced nitrate-leaching by 30 to 80 %. However, common vetch had a significant lower potential compared to the tested non-legume catch crops. Further investigations are needed to optimize the system with special regards to the concurrence between cereal and catch crop in autumn and in early spring.

Management of forb species mixtures for high biomass production Organic Eprints
Mortensen, T.; Eriksen, J.; Søegaard, K..
Including forb species in grassland mixtures may secure a more biodiversity-friendly production of biomass. This experiment showed interesting future perspectives in terms of production of low-cost biomass for e.g. biogas production, which can be obtained by reducing the number of cuttings without compromising yield levels. No significant differences in dry matter (DM) yields of chicory, birdsfoot trefoil, yarrow and a 13 species mixture were observed between the situations with four compared to one autumn cut per year. Especially the 13 species mixture showed great potential in terms of yield and suppression of unsown species, for which reasons it should be developed further through knowledge on the species in pure stands.

Unkrautunterdrückung und -bekämpfung durch Fruchtfolgegestaltung, Bodenbearbeitung, Aussaatzeit, Saatmenge und Stickstoffversorgung Organic Eprints
Pallutt, Bernhard.

The use of mixed species cropping to manage pests and diseases – theory and practice Organic Eprints
Ramert, Birgitta; Lennartsson, Margi; Davies, Gareth.
This paper was presented at the UK organic research 2002 on behalf of colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR). Mixed species cropping is often perceived as a viable tool to increase on-farm biodiversity in organic agriculture and is a potentially important component of any sustainable cropping system. Apart from increasing total farm productivity, mixed species cropping can bring many important benefits such as improvement of soil fertility management and suppression of pests and/or diseases. In this sense it can be seen as performing different eco-services in the farm system. This paper discusses mixed cropping in this context while focusing on its potential and actual use as a tool to manage pests and diseases in organic farming systems.
