Organic Dairy Production - A Review Organic Eprints
Nicholas, Phillipa; Padel, Susanne; Cuttle, S P; Fowler, S M; Hovi, M; Lampkin, N H; Weller, R F.
Organic farming aims to create an integrated, humane, environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural system. For organic dairy systems, the fulfilment of these aims requires the understanding and integration of a number of systems components including land use (mixed or dairy only) and stocking rate; grassland and forage production (including quantity and quality); potential milk yield (and milk quality); animal nutrition (largely farm based) and health; environmental sustainability such as farm nutrient balance; the financial status of the farm (including enterprise performance, fixed costs and labour use and farm income and profit) and finally the policy environment in which organic dairy systems operate. This review discusses worldwide...

Leiber, Florian; Dorn, Katharina; Probst, Johanna K.; Krenmayr, Ilse; Isensee, Anne; Spengler Neff, Anet.

Refining proteins from green crops for high quality feed products for monogastricanimals and dairy cows Organic Eprints
Lübeck, Mette.
Green biorefinery concepts have the potential to become a suitable solution for production of organic protein-rich feeds from green crops. Different green crops such as alfalfa, red clover and clover grasses are studied as possible feedstocks for the development of an organic biorefinery system with refined proteins, ensiled press cake to be used as cattle feed and residual juice with potentials for fermentation of amino acids, lactic acid or other uses. A process was developed by which screw pressed juice from the freshly harvested crop was used for lactic acid fermentation to decrease the pH and precipitate proteins. These refined proteins have a favourable amino acid content and are comparable with soy proteins, especially for poultry where methionine...

Schneider, Claudia; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Klocke, Peter; Knierim, Ute.
Loose housing systems are commonly designed for cows without horns. Farmers keeping horned herds are facing increased risks of injuries among the cows. Interviews were carried out on farms with 62 horned dairy herds in order to collect practical evidence on problems and suitable measures related to the keeping of loose housed horned cows. Most farmers see the feeding area, the cubicles and the waiting area before milking as problem areas. A possibility to securely lock all cows in the feeding rack and an easy retreat from the rack is regarded important. The cubicles should offer an exit to the front, which can be used by cows when attacked from behind. Generous space allowances in the waiting area as well as in the whole stable were recommended....

Effect of replacing organic grass-clover silage from primary growth with regrowth on feed intake and milk yield of dairy cows Organic Eprints
Naadland, Sondre Stokke; Steinshamn, Håvard; Randby, Åshild T..
Under Norwegian conditions, diets based on primary growth (PG) silage typically increase milk yield compared to silage prepared from the regrowth (RG). Organic PG, dominated by immature grasses, is often high in energy and low in crude protein (CP), whereas the opposite is the case for organic RG harvests, dominated by clover. Here, we tested the hypotheses that increasing proportions of RG will reduce the total supply of metabolizable energy, but increase the CP intake, and that there is a dietary optimal mix of PG and RG to meet requirements for optimal milk production. Sixteen Norwegian Red cows were used in an experiment designed with four balanced 4 × 4 Latin squares with 21-day periods to evaluate the effect of incremental replacement of PG with RG...

Økologiske mjølkebruk er mer effektive enn konvensjonelle! Organic Eprints
Serikstad, Grete Lene.

Organic dairy farming and sustainability Organic Eprints
Leiber, Florian; Müller, Adrian; Maurer, Veronika; Schader, Christian; Bieber, Anna.
The main cornerstones for enhancing the credibility of the organic dairy sector are: a) to realize an efficient roughage-based production, which requires significantly less inputs from arable land than conventional systems without producing more GHG emissions per unit of products as a whole; b) to enhance dairy cows’ health and welfare, indicated by a clearly improved longevity; and c) to develop the right matches between local conditions (in particular available feed sources) and cow genotypes, in order to achieve functioning systems with the lowest possible need for external nutrient sources.

Opportunities for farming in alpine countries – pathways to truly grassland-based beef and milk production in Austria and Switzerland Organic Eprints
Weisshaidinger, R.; Frick, R.; Moakes, S.; Müller, A.; Bartel, A.; Schwank, O.; Biedermann, R.; Stolze, M..
Farming in the alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland fulfils important economic, socio-cultural and ecological functions for society. However, even though both Austria and Switzerland have increasingly focused their agricultural policy towards ecology, in both countries negative environmental impacts of agriculture still have to be reduced massively.

Klop, A.; Zonderland, J.L.; Van Riel, J.W..

Risk factors contributing to udder health depression during alpine summer pasturing in Swiss dairy herds. Organic Eprints
Walkenhorst, Michael; Spranger, Jörg; Klocke, Peter; Schären, Walter.
One third of Swiss agricultural land is high altitude grassland. 15% of all Swiss dairy cows feed there for about 2 to 5 months during the summer. About 30 % of all alpine bulk milk samples of the Swiss province “Graubünden” exceeded the somatic cell count (SCC) of 350’000/ml. The objective of this project was to evaluate factors effecting increasing SCC on alpine pastures. Foremilk quarter samples of all lactating cows of 3 high-altitude sites (n= 128 cows) were taken once on the 12 farm valley sites (v) and three times during the summer on the alpine sites (a1 to a3). Quarter samples were investigated for microbial pathogens and SCC. Lactation number and lactation days of the cow were recorded. In the statistical models for the three alpine control dates...
