A recent study by Dong and Leibtag found coupons were effective in increasing fruit and vegetable demand. The current study supports these finding for the OJ product group. The analysis focused on the informational/advertising or demand shift impact of coupons, as opposed to the price impact which could not be determined since data on prices were a weighted average for coupon users and non-users. The results indicate a 6% increase in OJ gallons sales when coupons are used. The coupon variable used in the analysis, however, measures the extent of coupon usage but not intensity. As such, the results provide a partial view of the impact of coupons and further analysis on data that also includes some measure of intensity is needed to more fully evaluate... |

This study examines imposing and testing restrictions on preference variables in the Rotterdam model through the impacts of these variables on marginal utilities. An empirical analysis of the impact of a female labor force participation variable in a Rotterdam demand system for fresh fruit illustrates the methodology. This variable was modeled through its impact on marginal utilities via "adjusted" prices, following theoretical work by Basmann and Barten, among others. Results show that the female labor participation has negatively impacted the demands for citrus, while positively impacting the demands for other fresh fruit. |

Increased consumption of vegetables may reduce obesity and the prevalence of cardiac diseases and cancer. Norwegians consume less vegetables than nutrition experts recommend and the per capita consumption is lower than in most European countries. To investigate the causes of low consumption, a two-step approach is used to estimate the demand segmented by nine different household types. In the first step, a probit model is estimated to investigate the decision whether to purchase traditional vegetables, salad vegetables, and industrially processed vegetables. Conditional on purchase, an almost ideal demand model is used to model how much to purchase. The own-price elasticities and total expenditure elasticities are high for traditional and industrially... |

Widespread obesity in the U.S. is a relatively recent phenomenon, reaching epidemic proportions only in the last 15 years. However, existing research shows that while calorie expenditure through physical activity has not changed appreciably since 1980, calorie consumption has risen dramatically. Consequently, any explanation of obesity must address the reason why consumers tend to overeat in spite of somewhat obvious future health implications. This study tests for an addiction to food nutrients as a potential explanation for the obesity epidemic. Specifically, we use a random coefficients (mixed) logit model applied to household scanner data to test a multivariate version of the rational addiction model of Becker and Murphy and Chaloupka. We find evidence... |

As the farm-to-retail price spread continues to grow, come cattle producers a beginning to consider integrating into the retail sector. Such a venture would require large investments in capital with uncertain return. This study seeks to determine the potential success of a stand-alone retail outlet selling “all natural” beef in an affluent area of Jackson, MS. Using choice-based conjoint analysis, demand for the new retail outlet is modeled as a function of the beef price at the store, distance of the store from consumers’ homes, distance of the store from consumers’ typical grocery store, and price of beef at substitute grocery stores. Simulation results suggest the proposed outlet could be a profitable venture, depending upon location and beef price. |

Honey is a by‐product of the pollination of plants and essential to almost all agricultural plant product. Demand for honey provides a partial compensation for the pollination services. Hence, programs to support honey demand such as promotions are potentially very important to the agricultural sector as well as the honey industry. Honey is utilized for table consumption and for manufacturing and both U.S. domestic and foreign honey imports both contribute to the U.S. honey availability. Econometric models are estimated showing the domestic table‐use and manufacturing demand with the models explicitly incorporating the effects of generic promotion of honey. Rates-of‐ return to the U.S. honey promotion programs are estimated with rates assigned to domestic... |

We apply the Berry, Levinsohn and Pakes (1995) market equilibrium model (BLP) to data from 30 brands of beers sold in 12 U.S. cities over 20 quarters (1988-92) to estimate the consumers taste for beer characteristics (price, alcohol content, and calories) as well as for the cultural region of origin (USA, Anglo-European, Germanic, and countries bordering the U.S.). Consumer heterogeneity is allowed with respect to age, income and gender. Overall we end up with 7,200 beer brand observations (30x12x20) and 13,920 (58 random draws x 12 x 20) consumer observations. Empirical results indicate that indeed there is home bias with respect to European beers and somewhat less so with respect to beers from bordering countries (Mexico and Canada). Home bias is more... |

The study was initiated to understand the demand-supply gap of various feed crops and identify measures to bridge it. Several models were introduced and discussed in a meeting held in Bogor (Indonesia) in September 2001 for determining the demand and supply of different feed crops. These are presented in this study. For this study, data was collected from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India, New Delhi. Data was also collected from other sources to understand the behaviour of exports and also the uses of animal feeds. Information from the Director and scientists at the National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research, New Delhi and Agricultural... |

The Korean livestock industry is currently facing the critical challenge of the market liberalization trend under the World Trade Organization. This study analyzes the consumption behavior of meat and fish products in Korea, by estimating the Linear Approximate Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS). The empirical results indicate that beef imports in Korea would increase in the future under trade liberalization. If cheap and better quality imported beef are introduced to Korean consumers, Hanwoo (Korean domestic cattle) beef would not maintain its market share. Key words: Meat, fish, trade liberalization, per capita consumption, demand, separability, and price elasticity. |

The demand for OJ in Europe, and in particular the own-price elasticity of demand, has been difficult to estimate due to lack of good data. Europe, however, is the largest OJ market in the world (USDA, Foreign Agricultural Service), and cannot be ignored in analyzing the U.S. and Florida OJ situations, given OJ is an internationally traded commodity. Thus, estimates of the impacts of factors such as own-price on Europe’s OJ demand are critical for understanding the market. The estimates in this study, although rough, provide some guidance for the magnitude of the price response in Europe, but to keep them in perspective, they are based on a relatively small number of observations and a proxy variable, suggesting that, as more and hopefully better data... |
