Inadequacy of bacterial indicators for assessing elimination rates of viruses from molluscan shellfish ArchiMer
Burkhardt, W; Watkins, W; Rippey, S.
The reported incidence of shellfish-borne illness in the United States increased dramatically during the last decade. Most of the outbreaks are attributed to diseases of viral aetiology. These human health problems result primarily from the ingestion of raw shellfish which have accumulated enteric pathogens from environmental waters or from wet storage facilities. Our studies have demonstrated that hard-shelled clams concentrate different indicator micro-organisms at variable and unpredictable rates during the year. In temperate waters, this has been observed at two abbreviated periods in mid-spring and again in late fall when accumulation rates increased dramatically. Moreover, these rates were not generally coincident for viruses and bacteria. In...

Tige, Gilbert; De Kergariou, Gabriel; Cochennec, Nathalie; Rabouin, Marie-agnès.
A systematic surveillance progam conducted since 1980 along the coasts of Britanny has followed the evolution and epidemiological state of the natural O. eulis oyster beds and seed areas in the intertidal zones and deep water. Presently, Marteilia refringens exists endemically in Brittany estuaries ; the rate and degree of infestation varies from year to year depending on the hydrological conditions and the geographical region. In no case, however, is the return of flat oyster culture envisoned. Bonamia ostreae is present not only in the estuaries but also in the deep-water rearing areas (Baie de Quiberon, Cancale, Baie de St Brieuc). The infestation increases with age, but also depends on the quantity of the stock and the culture practises. In particular,...

Maes, P; Paillard, C.
The symptom which characterizes the brown ring disease (BRD) in Manilla clam Ruditapes philippinarum has been observed in other Bivalvia species (Veneridae and Pectinidae). Vibrio P1, responsible of the BRD in R. philippinarum , has been detected in other Veneridae which were carrying the symptom. In mussel and oysters which are cultivated in Europe, the symptom has never been reported and Vibrio P1 has not been detected. Experimental contaminations of bivalves of commercial interest with the pathogen showed a clear Vibrio P1 sensitivity of European clam R. decussatus ; this latter seems however to be less sensitive than the Manilla clam.

Biological and economic factors in the selection of cultured fish species and the development of a bio-economic model ArchiMer
Wu, R.
The selection of candidate species for mariculture is determined by a number of biological factors, e.g. foraging efficiency, growth efficiency, mortality, grow-out period and susceptibility to environmental fluctuations, disease and crowding, as well as economic factors e.g. the supply and price of fry, grow-out cost and price of adult. A computer model incorporating these major factors is being developed, to determine and compare the potential of different culture species.

A review of the known hosts geographical range and current diagnostic procedures for the virus diseases of cultured penaeid shrimp ArchiMer
Lightner, D; Bell, T; Redman, R.
At least six virus diseases are presently known in cultured penaeid shrimp. Each of these six penaeid virus diseases (BP = Baculovirus penaei ; MBV = Penaeus monodon -type baculovirus (including PBV of Australian penaeids); BMN = baculoviral midgut gland necrosis; HPV = hepatopancreatic parvo-like virus; IHHNV = infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus; and REO = reo-like virus of the hepatopancreas) may be comprised by a multitude of individual strains, some of which are highly pathogenic to some penaeids, while being of little importance to others.

A long term study of bonamiosis in Quiberon bay, France ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Miossec, Laurence; Blanchet, Estelle; Garcia, Celine; Joly, Jean-pierre; Francois, Cyrille; Berthe, Franck.
Bonamiosis was first reported in association with mass mortality of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany. The disease rapidly spread to all of the oyster farming areas in France but also in other European countries. The French flat oyster production, which already suffered from another protozoan disease, marteiliosis, decreased from 5500 mt in 1979 to less than 2000 mt after 1980. In 2001, about 350 French farms sell 1650 mt of flat oysters. This production mainly relies on natural spat collection which specially occurs in Quiberon bay. One third of this spat is transferred from South to North Brittany for further growth. Quiberon bay constitutes an interesting site regarding the surveillance of bonamiosis because of the...

Marine Seafood Toxin Diseases: Issues In Epidemiology & Community Outreach OceanDocs
Weisman, R.; Baden, D.G.; Blythe, D.G.; Fleming, L.E.; Bean, J.A..
In addition to increased seafood consumption and tourism, recent studies link global climate change with an apparent increasing incidence of the Marine Seafood Toxin diseases. However, the epidemiology of the human diseases caused by the harmful marine phytoplankton is still in its infancy. In general, the epidemiology of these diseases has consisted of case reports of acute illness, sometimes as epidemic outbreaks, associated with the ingestion of suspicious seafood. Furthermore, even these outbreaks are highly under-reported, especially in poorer countries and in traditionally non-endemic areas. True incidence data are not available due to the lack of disease and exposure biomarkers in humans, as well as the global lack of routine exposure and disease...

OceanDocs
Alcolado, P. M.; Hernández Muñoz, D.; Caballero, H.; Busutil, L.; Perera, S.; Hidalgo, G..

Marine Swimming–Related Illness: Implications for Monitoring and Environmental Policy OceanDocs
Allen, P.; Wong, T.; Ford, T.; Epstein, P.R.; Henrickson, S..
There is increasing evidence that environmental degradation may be contributing to an increase in marine-related diseases across a wide range of taxonomic groups. This includes a growing number of reports of both recreational and occupational users of marine waters developing gastrointestinal, respiratory, dermatologic, and ear, nose, and throat infections. The duration and type of exposure, concentration of pathogens, and host immunity determine the risk of infection. Public health authorities may not be able to accurately predict the risk of waterborne disease from marine waters due to the limitations of conventional monitoring, as well as erroneous perceptions of pathogen life span in marine systems. Pathogens undetectable by conventional methods may...
