Microwave drying of plant tissue for nutritional analysis of Corymbia citriodora (Hook.) and Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg. Agrociencia
Teixeira,Matheus Pozetti; Campos,Cid Naudi Silva; Prado,Renato de Mello; Caione,Gustavo; Mingotte,Fábio Luiz Checchio; Agostinho,Flavia Bastos.
Abstract The method used to dry plant tissue samples may modify its nutrient content, and results in incorrect diagnostic of crop nutritional status. The hypothesis was that microwave drying method does not affect the nutrient content of leaves neither the interpretation of the results, as compared to oven-drying procedure. In this study we evaluated the effect of microwave drying of eucalyptus (Corymbia Citriodora (Hook.)) and rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) leaves on dry matter and macronutrient content, as compared to oven drying. The study was performed in a laboratory at the Department of Soils and Fertilizers of Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho”, UNESP, Jaboticabal-SP-Brazil. The experiments were: one using leaf...

Growth and development of Mentha piperita L. in nutrient solution as affected by rates of potassium BABT
Valmorbida,Janice; Boaro,Carmen Sílvia Fernandes.
The influence of potassium on the development of Mentha piperita L. was evaluated in the plants grown in nutritive solution modified by variations in potassium, at 6.0, 3.0, and 1.5 mmol L-1, establishing differences between treatments and corresponding, respectively, to the concentration proposed in Hoagland and Arnon's no. 2 solution and reductions by 50% and 75%. Until 21 days after transplanting, the concentration used was diluted to 50% in the three treatments. Evaluations consisted of leaf area, development of the above-ground part, and dry matter of different plant organs. Plants grown with 1.5/3.0 mmol L-1 K showed greater development of the above-ground part. Other variables were not different among plants in the different treatments.

A model describing the relationship between electrical conductivity and forage dry matter content BABT
Ashbell,Gilad; Evers,Evert; Bosma,Ate H..
The correlation between dry matter (DM) content, electrical conductivity (EC) and ash content was found to be linear in grass and alfalfa during drying. While minerals in grass and alfalfa were very stable components during drying, their concentrations and EC increase accordingly; therefore, the EC value could serve as a measurement to determine DM content. Results indicated that EC measurement in grass and alfalfa during drying was simple, accurate, fast and easily repeatable, and could serve as an alternative method for DM determination.

Development of mint (Mentha piperita L.) grown on biosolids: evaluation of productivity and essential oil content BABT
Scavroni,Joseane; Ferreira,Leonardo Cesar; Valmorbida,Janice; Boaro,Carmen Sílvia Fernandes.
Development of Mentha piperita L . on biosolids amended soil with levels equivalent to 0, 28, 56 and 112 t ha-1 was evaluated. In order to measure the productivity and its relation with mint essential oil yield, different indices were determined: leaf area, total and several organ dry matter, leaf area ratio, specific leaf area, net assimilation rate and relative growth rate at 30, 44, 58, 72 and 86 days after planting (DAP), and essential oil yield at 90, 110 and 120 DAP. Physiological indices revealed that biosolids prolonged the vegetative phase of the plants, which adapted themselves to the presence of biosolids with time. Plants showed inverse behaviors in relation to productivity, resulting from the primary metabolism, represented by the shoot dry...

Quantile regression of nonlinear models to describe different levels of dry matter accumulation in garlic plants Ciência Rural
Puiatti,Guilherme Alves; Cecon,Paulo Roberto; Nascimento,Moysés; Nascimento,Ana Carolina Campana; Carneiro,Antônio Policarpo Souza; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Puiatti,Mário; Oliveira,Ana Carolina Ribeiro de.
ABSTRACT: Plant growth analyses are important because they generate information on the demand and necessary care for each development stage of a plant. Nonlinear regression models are appropriate for the description of curves of growth, since they include parameters with practical biological interpretation. However, these models present information in terms of the conditional mean, and they are subject to problems in the adjustment caused by possible outliers or asymmetry in the distribution of the data. Quantile regression can solve these problems, and it allows the estimation of different quantiles, generating more complete and robust results. The objective of this research was to adjust a nonlinear quantile regression model for the study of dry matter...
