Nota complementar sobre a composição ictiofaunística da Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo T. C.; Vendel,Ana Lúcia.
The utilisation of multiple gears and the surveying of other areas than that of mangrove habitats have increased in 27 the number of fish species known in the Guaratuba Bay, an estuarine ecosystem located in the southern of Brazilian coastal region (25º52'S, 48º39'W). The new occurrence of a typically freshwater species (Pimelodidae) and of several Clupeiformes and Gobiidae species, reveals the importance of the salt marsh and the innermost zones of this Bay to the distribution of certain fish groups.

A survey performed in the Guaratuba Bay (25º52'S; 48º39'W) and the adjacent marine area has provided additional data about the habits of the croaker in the southern coast of Brazil. A dynamic pattern of movements along the marine and estuarine waters was observed, but it does not indicate spawning activity in the study area. During autumn/winter, pre-adults and adults use the marine waters. In spring/summer, following gonadal maturation, the individuals leave this area and probably move to deeper waters, where they spawn. Until the end of summer, the estuary is then occupied by juveniles coming from the marine spawning area. In autumn/winter, these juveniles and the new pre-adults move to the marine zone adjacent to the bay and begin gonadal maturation. It...

Size distribution of the jack Chloroscombrus chrysurus (Linnaeus) (Actinopterygii, Carangidae) in a tropical bay at Southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Costa,Marcus R. da; Albieri,Rafael J.; Araújo,Francisco G..
Chloroscombrus chrysurus (Linnaeus, 1766) is the most abundant representant of the Carangidae family in the Sepetiba bay, a c.a. 450 km² semi-closed coastal area in the Southeastern Brazil. We analyze fish (number, weight and size) and environmental data to assess the part of life history of this species in tropical embayment environments. Fish sampling were taken in triplicates by monthly bottom trawls, in three bay zones (inner, middle and outer), defined according to a spatial gradient of depth and salinity. Juveniles were firstly caught in the inner bay zone measuring 30-90 mm total length - TL (mode = 60 mm TL) in Spring. Then they move toward the middle and outermost part of the bay in Summer-Autumn (120-180 mm TL), following a seaward migration to...

Nota complementar sobre os hábitos de Gerres melanopterus (Teleostei, Gerreidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil (25º52'S, 48º39'W) Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso C.; Robert,Maurício de Castro.
A survey performed in the Guaratuba Bay supports the hypothesis that the G. melanopterus individuals migrate to reproduce at the sea during summer. In autumn and winter, the adults return to the Bay, a pattern not yet described in the literature for this species. G. melanopterus explores the most internal areas of the Bay when the continental influence is lower. Differences in feeding habits were registered between individuals occupying the investigated area and those from a nearby mangrove previously studied.

Composição da assembléia de peixes da Baía da Ribeira, Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Andreata,José V.; Meurer,Bruno C.; Baptista,Maurício G.S.; Manzano,Felipe V.; Teixeira,Dirceu E.; Longo,Michele M.; Freret,Natalie V..
The ichthyofauna composition of the Baía da Ribeira was analyzed between December 1998 and November2001. The instruments used were an otter-trawl net, beach seines, cast net and visual census. It was registered two classes, composed by 16 orders, 59 families and 148 species. The high wealth of the region is due to the great diversity of environments and its location at the north limit of Argentine an Zoogeographic Province. The instruments diversification, the samples regions and the long sampling period were the responsables to the great numbers of collected species in comparison to some others studies at the same area.

POLYCHAETES FROM RED MANGROVE (Rhizophora mangle) AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE WATER CONDITIONS IN THE GULF OF URABÁ, COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN Acta biol.Colomb.
FERNÁNDEZ-RODRÍGUEZ,Vanessa; LONDOÑO-MESA,Mario H.; RAMÍREZ-RESTREPO,John Jairo.
Polychaetes play a significant role in benthic communities' ecology; they dominate the infauna, recycle nutrients from the water column and are commonly used as biological indicators. Along the Gulf of Urabá (Colombian Caribbean), particularly for the zones of the Marirrío Bay and the Rionegro Cove, there are no reports about ecological aspects of polychaete species; only a few taxonomic studies have been conducted. In this research we evaluate the relationship between polychaete species associated with red mangrove roots, Rhizophora mangle, and some physicochemical variables of the water column; also, we made some notes about the spatial distributions of polychaetes species within the two study areas. We found that the environmental variables that best...

TAVARES CUTRIM,Allana Stéphanie; SANTOS SOUSA,Lorena Karine; PASSOS RIBEIRO,Rannyele; DE OLIVEIRA,Verônica Maria; SILVA DE ALMEIDA,Zafira da.
ABSTRACT Polychaetes play an important role in the structure and functioning of benthic communities in mangroves; however, knowledge about these organisms in the Maranhão Amazon coast is scarcity. This study analyzed the ecological aspects of polychaete community in the Quebra Pote mangrove in Maranhão State. Four sampling campaigns were carried out during both rainy and dry periods between November 2013 and July 2014, using 100 meters long transects set perpendicular to the waterline at three zones 50 m between them. A total of 521 organisms were identified belonging to ten families and 15 species; Nephtys simoni, Notomastus sp., and Paraonis sp. represented 58.92 % of all samples. Mobile deposit-feeders polychaetes were dominant and abundant. The Quebra...

Host-exclusivity and host-recurrence by wood decay fungi (Basidiomycota - Agaricomycetes) in Brazilian mangroves Acta Botanica
Nogueira-Melo,Georgea S.; Santos,Paulo J. P.; Gibertoni,Tatiana B..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate for the first time the ecological interactions between species of Agaricomycetes and their host plants in Brazilian mangroves. Thirty-two field trips were undertaken to four mangroves in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, from April 2009 to March 2010. One 250 x 40 m stand was delimited in each mangrove and six categories of substrates were artificially established: living Avicennia schaueriana (LA), dead A. schaueriana (DA), living Rhizophora mangle (LR), dead R. mangle (DR), living Laguncularia racemosa (LL) and dead L. racemosa (DL). Thirty-three species of Agaricomycetes were collected, 13 of which had more than five reports and so were used in statistical analyses. Twelve species showed significant values for...

Composition of functional ecological guilds of the fish fauna of the internal sector of the Amazon Estuary, Pará, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MOURÃO,KEILA R.M.; FERREIRA,VALDIMERE; LUCENA-FRÉDOU,FLÁVIA.
The present study describes the spatial and temporal structure of the estuarine fish community in the internal sector of the Amazon Estuary. Samples were obtained in the main channels and tidal creeks of Guajará and Marajó Bays and Guamá River. A total of 41,516 fish specimens were collected, representing 136 taxa, 38 families and 12 orders. In the dry season, the mean salinity of the main channel increased along a limnic-marine gradient, between the Guamá River and the Marajó Bay. Species richness was lowest in the mouth of the Guamá River and in the right margin of the Guajará Bay. Fish species composition and environmental guilds differed markedly among areas: Migrants and Freshwater Stragglers were dominant in the Guamá River and the Guajará Bay, while...

Trophic habits of the flounder Citharichthys gilberti (Paralichthyidae) and its spatiotemporal variability in Buenaventura Bay, Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
García-Cardona,Evelin; Molina,Andrés; Duque,Guillermo.
ABSTRACT Fishes belonging to the order Pleuronectiformes, are flattened and inhabit estuarine bottoms. They are important because they provide an energy exchange between the demersal habitat and the water column, reflecting the effects of environmental variations in the ecosystem and the dynamics of trophic relation between species. This research evaluates the influence that some space-time variations have on the diet of Citharichthys gilberti in Buenaventura Bay. 92 stomachs corresponding to sites with different environmental characteristics within the Bay were examined. Feeding indices were determined to make a trophic characterization and evaluate the interactions between trophic habits and environmental variables. The prey with the highest relative...

Spatial distribution and increase of microplastics over time in sediments of Buenaventura Bay, Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
Vásquez-Molano,Daniela; Molina,Andres; Duque,Guillermo.
ABSTRACT The increase in production, consumption and inadequate disposition of plastics has generated an accumulation of these elements in marine ecosystems, which have become important microplastics sinks (< 5 mm). The objective of this research was to determine the temporal and spatial differences in the density, distribution, and type of microplastics in the sediments of Buenaventura Bay. For this purpose, sediment samples were collected in the internal estuary (close to the rivers) and in the external estuary (with a greater marine influence). Samples were obtained in the dry, transition, and rainy season for the years 2015 and 2019. Microplastics were extracted by density separation method, each particle was classified and measured by optical...

The mangrove as a temporary habitat for fish: the Eucinostomus Species at Guaratuba Bay, Brazil (25º 52'S;48º 39'W) BABT
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso C.; Otto,Gislaine.
Several coastal fish use the estuarine habitat during a part of their life cycle. These sites are considered good for the reproductive activity, as well as for the growth of larvae and juveniles. Concerning the Gerreidae, however, many studies reveal that most species leave the estuaries to reproduce at sea. At Guaratuba Bay, southern Brazil, this family is represented by three genera and five species, which make an important fraction of the local assemblage. The present study investigated the populational structure and breeding habits of three Eucinostomus species, in order to know what relationship exists between them and the mangrove. It was found that the Guaratuba mangrove represents a transitory habitat for the life cycle of the Eucinostomus species....
