Variance components of corn hybrids evaluated in the USA corn belt Agrociencia
Coutiño-Estrada,Bulmaro; Vidal-Martínez,Victor A..
Abstract In the final steps of a corn (Zea mays L.) breeding program, the test of the superior crosses is a standard practice involving yield trials in many test environments. The objectives of this research were to compare both the magnitude of the standard error of prediction of three different linear mixed models where location and hybrid effects were considered random or fixed effects and the magnitude of the phenotypic variance. Mixed, GLM, and Varcomp procedures from SAS were applied to grain yield and moisture data obtained from 40 hybrids evaluated at 22 locations within the U.S. Corn Belt. Results showed that when using a linear model which considers both location and hybrid effects as random effects, rather than fixed effects, standard errors of...

Response of Tunisian durum (Triticum turgidum ssp. durum) and bread (Triticum aestivum L.) wheats to water stress Agrociencia
Ayed,Sourour; Rezgui,Mohsen; Othmani,Afef; Rezgui,Mounir; Trad,Hiba; Silva,Jaime A. Teixeira-da; Ben Younes,Mongi; Ben Salah,Hamadi; Kharrat,Mohamed.
Abstract Wheat is a staple crop in Tunisia, but little is known about the response of Tunisian durum wheat (Triticum turgidumssp.durum) and bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to water stress. In semi-arid regions, where cereals are concentrated, grain yield is subject to water deficit especially due to variability in rainfall. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the response to water stress of three durum wheat (Mâali, Nasr and Salim) and two bread wheat (Tahent and Utique) varieties. The experimental design was a complete randomized block, water treatments were rainfed conditions (T0) and irrigation applied at the tillering and flowering stages (T1, control) with three replications per treatment, and data was analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey...

Analysis of grain density and yield characters in aromatic rice genotypes Agrociencia
Shahidullah,S. M.; Hanafi,M. M.; Ashrafuzzaman,M.; Uddin,M. K.; Razi-Ismail,M..
Aromatic rices (Oryza sativa L.) normally produce enormous spikelets of low grain weight resulting low yield. Grain weight and grain density are the vital indicators of grain filling and mainly dependent on genetic make-up. Detail study of grain density and yield components of aromatic rice is a crucial need for yield improvement. An experiment was conducted with 40 rice genotypes to assess the grain density of aromatic rices and to observe the relationships of different grain categories with yield characters. The percentage of high density grains, good grains, average grains, poor grains, partially filled grains, spikelet sterility, and thousand grain weight were found to vary in a great extent. Maximum 50 % high density grain was harvested in BR39 and a...

Relationships of rice yield and quality based on genotype by trait (GT) biplot Anais da ABC (AABC)
SHARIFI,PEYMAN; EBADI,ALI AKBAR.
ABSTRACT An experiment was conducted to examine the influencing characters on rice by using 64 rice genotypes, including four local landraces, four released cultivars and 56 mutant lines (M5) derived from these genotypes, with application of the genotype by trait (GT) biplot methodology. The first two principal components (PC1 and PC2) accounted for 46.6% of total variation in 64 genotypes. The polygon view of GT biplot suggested seven sections for 64 genotypes. The vertex G38 had good amounts of grain yield, panicle length, hundred grain weight, internodes length, plant height and fertility percentage. Generally based on vector view it was demonstrated that the selection of high grain yield would be performed via thousand grain weight, panicle weight and...

Statistical methods to study adaptability and stability of wheat genotypes Bragantia
Bornhofen,Elesandro; Benin,Giovani; Storck,Lindolfo; Woyann,Leomar Guilherme; Duarte,Thiago; Stoco,Matheus Giovane; Marchioro,Sergio Volmir.
ABSTRACT The sensitivity of wheat crop to environmental variations frequently results in significant genotype (G) x environment (E) interaction (GEI). We compared statistical methods to analyze adaptability and stability of wheat genotypes in value for cultivation and use (VCU) trials. We used yield performance data of 22 wheat genotypes evaluated in three locations (Guarapuava, Cascavel, and Abelardo Luz) in 2012 and 2013. Each trial consisted of a complete randomized block design with three replications. The GEI was evaluated using methodologies based on mixed models, analysis of variance, linear regression, multivariate, and nonparametric analysis. The Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used to verify similarities in the genotype selection...

Plant growth-promoting bacteria associated with nitrogen fertilization at topdressing in popcorn agronomic performance Bragantia
Spolaor,Leandro Teodoski; Gonçalves,Leandro Simões Azeredo; Santos,Odair José Andrade Pais dos; Oliveira,André Luiz Martinez de; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Bertagna,Filipe Augusto Bengosi; Kuki,Mauricio Carlos.
ABSTRACT The use of plant growth-promoting bacteria is a promising alternative with low environmental impact to increase the efficiency of use of chemical fertilizers, ensuring high yield with better cost-effective ratio. In maize crops, several studies have demonstrated an increased yield when Azospirillum-based inoculants are used. In the case of popcorn, there are no available studies related to use of inoculation and its response on yield parameters. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the field performance of popcorn when inoculated with the commercial product Masterfix L (A. brasilense Ab-V5 and A. brasilense Ab-V6) and the non-commercial inoculant UEL (A. brasilense Ab-V5 + Rhizobium sp. 53GRM1) associated with nitrogen fertilization. Selection for grain yield and quality in segregating generations of wheat BABT
Andrade,Alessandro Ramos de; Riede,Carlos Roberto; Scholz,Maria Brígida dos Santos; Destro,Deonisio; Fonseca,Ines Cristina de Batista.
The objective of the work was to combine simultaneous selection for grain yield and technological quality in elite segregating populations of wheat developed by the breeding program of IAPAR. Thirteen populations were chosen according to their potentiality of genetic variability in the F2 generation of the 1997 crop season. One hundred heads were selected from each population and sown as F3 head-rows in the following season. Visual selection of individual head-rows or lines was done for yield potential and maturity. Seeds of the selected lines were evaluated for Sedimentation Values as well as Protein Content. The populations were identified as C1 to C13, representing the different crosses. The number of F2:3 lines selected within populations varied from...

Path analysis under multicollinearity in soybean BABT
Bizeti,Henrique Stoco; Carvalho,Claudio Guilherme Portela de; Souza,José Roberto Pinto de; Destro,Deonisio.
This study aimed to establish the phenotypic correlations among several soybean traits with grain yield in direct and indirect effects using path analysis, and to compare alternative methods for minimizing the adverse effects of multicollinearity in estimating path coefficients. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Nine soybean genotypes belonging to three seed size categories were used. The correlation studies and the path analysis showed that the seed size was not important for increased yield. The number of nodes and plant height at maturity showed significant correlation with grain yield. Using the least square methodology, the results obtained by path analysis under multicollinearity...
