DEVELOPMENT OF THE ORGANIC SECTOR IN POST-SOCIALIST BULGARIA 1990-2013 Organic Eprints
Stoeva, Svetla; Slavova, Petya; Georgieva, Zdravka.
The aim of the paper is to present the socio-economic and political aspects in the development of organic sector in post-socialist Bulgaria. It will question the building up of the organic concept in terms of national policies, farming practices and market forces in the country. That topic has its scientific relevance at least in three crucial dimensions. Firstly, because the legacy of the socialist system significantly affected the structure of the agricultural sector as well as the entrepreneurial behavior of the rural population under conditions of transition. Secondly, the analysis is important because it helps to identify the internal (national) and the external (out of the national context) driving forces that influence the development of the...

The Farm as Organism: The Foundational Idea of Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
The term 'organic farming' was coined by Lord Northbourne in his canonical work "Look to the Land", published in London (1940). Northbourne introduced the concept of the farm as organism, contrasted organic with chemical farming, and introduced many of the concepts that continue to preoccupy discussions and practice of organic agriculture.

The Pioneers of Biodynamics in New Zealand Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
From the original records held in the Archives of the Goetheanum, the earliest pioneers of biodynamics in New Zealand, those who joined Steiner’s Experimental Circle of Anthroposophic Farmers and Gardeners from 1924 to 1938, the years of omertà, are now revealed. Each of these fifteen members of the Experimental Circle submitted a signed confidentiality agreement and was issued with a numbered copy of the Agriculture Course at the time of joining. Thirteen individual copies were issued; the Compton-Smiths shared copy #12E, and the Averys shared copy #30E. The ‘E’ suffix indicated that the copy was an English-language edition (sometimes the ‘E’ appeared as a prefix). The copy to Bacchus was #562 (without a suffix) indicating that it was the German-language...

Changing power alignments in the food sector: the case of organic farming Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun.
Although existing as a concept (with a few farmers following it) since the 1920s, it was in the 1970s and 1980s that organic farming evolved as a social movement pursuing an alternative style of food production and consumption. It is, however, a particular social movement, in so far that it has not only developed as an alternative idea to mainstream agriculture, but it has put its innovative ideas into a concrete, real practice. This practice has since continuously been developed further by farmers, engaged consumers, environmental groups, and researchers. In addition, politics have taken an interest in organic farming, and support organic farming in many countries. The implications of acting in such a real practice becomes manifest in the ‘triple logic’...

Koberwitz (Kobierzyce): In the footsteps of Rudolf Steiner Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
“Now once again we have made a great step forward!” exclaimed Rudolf Steiner on the drive back from Koberwitz. Koberwitz (now Kobierzyce, Poland) can fairly be regarded as the birthplace of biodynamic agriculture. Rudolf Steiner delivered eight lectures at the Koberwitz Chateau (Schloss Koberwitz) in German in the summer of 1924 (7-16 June). There were 111 attendees, 30 women and 81 men, who came from six countries: Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, France, and Sweden. The audience included farmers, estate managers, doctors, priests, teachers, artists, and engineers who all came to hear Steiner’s vision for agriculture. A witness observed “Seldom have I seen him so joyfully moved after the completion of a task as in this moment after the agricultural...

Global trends in agriculture and food systems Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Halberg, Niels; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Byrne, John; Iyer, Venkatesh; Toly, Noah.
Increasing globalization affects agricultural production and trade and has consequences for the sustainability of both conventional and organic agriculture. During the last decades, agricultural production and yields have been increasing along with global fertilizer and pesticide consumption. This development has been especially pronounced in the industrialized countries and some developing countries such as China, where cereal yields have increased a remarkable twofold and 4.5-fold respectively since 1961. In those countries, food security has increased, a greater variety of food has been offered and diets have changed towards a greater share of meat and dairy products. However, this development has led to a growing disparity among agricultural...

What Can Organic Farming Deliver? Lessons Learnt From 20 Years of Organic Pioneering Projects in New Member States Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko.
Summary: Avalon has been supporting organic farming in the New Member States since 1991. It has implemented numerous demonstration, research, education, policy making and awareness raising projects. Avalon has acquired a substantial legacy from its twenty years experience in inspiring, empowering and enabling organic movements in all New Member States. The present stage of development of the organic sector is quite different than the pioneering situation from twenty years ago. Today, the organic movement requires a different “language”, approach and advocacy tools. It is challenged to prove that it can create bridges and build alliances with other sustainable food and farming movements. Organic farming has become part of the mainstream and it ought to...

Stimulating the potential for innovation in organic farming by research Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs; Willer, Helga.
Organic farming research has been developed over 4 stages: i) Pioneer farmers and scientists, ii) pioneer private research institutes, iii) organic farming chairs at universities and finally iv) organic farming projects and institutes at state research institutions. Today, organic agriculture has become finally accepted within agriculture and food research. The main key players in organic research in Europe are mentioned in the text. Mainly in Europe, public funded research has shifted towards organic farming, whereas the research resources for conventional farming have been cut down considerably. The paper gives an overview of the current status and the future prospects of organic farming research in Europe.

STRUCTURE AND DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL PUBLICATIONS ON ORGANIC AGRICULTURE: A SCIENTOMETRIC REVIEW Organic Eprints
Siegmeier, Torsten; Blumenstein, Benjamin; Mühlrath, Daniel; Möller, Detlev.
Basic scientometric indicators are used to analyze the corpus of 2,801 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles on organic agriculture obtained from the so-called ‘Web of Science’ databases and to compare their dynamic with the general agricultural literature (136,712 articles). Apart from the development and publication growth we review bibliometric data on author, institution, country and language in order to produce insights on the structure of international publishing on organic farming.

Conventionalization or diversification? Development in the Danish organic production sector following market expansion Organic Eprints
Thorsøe, Martin H.; Noe, Egon.
The organic food market is constantly evolving and organic products are exchanged at multiple markets constituted by particular forms of interaction between producers and consumers. The aim of this paper is to explore how the market influences organic production by looking at the relation between the market and producers engagement towards trust and quality building as well as farm level production strategy. We distinguish between four different market agencements, an arrangement of actors with agency: 1) standardizing market agencement, 2) personalizing market agencement 3) virtualizing market agencement and 4) aesthetifying market agencement. Through qualitative interviews with organic producers, several different strategies are identified. The data...

Ecology of Earthworms under the ‘Haughley Experiment’ of Organic and Conventional Management Regimes Organic Eprints
Blakemore, Robert.
Significant differences in earthworm populations and soil properties were found in three sections of a farm at Haughley in Suffolk that, since 1939, had either an organic, a mixed conventional, or a stockless intensive arable regime. Compared with the mean earthworm population of a 1,000 year old permanent pasture of 424.0 m-2; an organic field had 178.6 m-2; a mixed field 97.5 m-2; and a stockless field 100.0 m-2. Species recorded were: Allolobophora chlorotica, accounting for most of the increase in the organic section; Aporrectodea caliginosa, dominant in the stockless section; Aporrectodea icterica; Ap. longa; Ap. nocturna; Ap. rosea; and Lumbricus terrestris. Soil analyses showed the organic soil had higher moisture, organic C, and mineral N, P,...

The role of a civil society organization in the development of the domestic organic market in Turkey Organic Eprints
Akyüz, A. Alper; Aslan, Bulut; Demir, A. Yonca.
In this paper, we report of a case from Turkey where a civil society organization took an active role in influencing laws, regulations and their implementations regarding organic agriculture and the marketing of organic products. Although the country’s climate and biodiversity is suitable for organic agriculture, the domestic market remained underdeveloped; the organic sector was directed mainly towards exports. By establishing the first marketplace solely for certified organic products in 2006, a non-governmental organization became the locomotive of the domestic sector. The process that leads to the 100% organic bazaar exhibits a contingent characteristic where particularly social and symbolic capital were mobilized by the NGO together with a framing of...

Organic Farming. An International History Organic Eprints
Beginning as a small protest to the industrialization of agriculture in the 1920s, organic farming has become a significant force in agricultural policy, marketing, and research. No longer dismissed as unscientific and counterproductive, organic techniques are now taken seriously by farmers, consumers, scientists, food processors, marketers, and regulatory agencies in much of the world. Organic farming is both dynamic and forward-looking but is also rooted in tradition. It is these traditions that can provide valuable starting points in debates over how organic farming should meet new challenges such as globalization, the emergence of new production techniques, and growing concern over equity and social justice in agriculture. Complementing general...
